Is Young & Restless About to Reunite Victoria and Ashland? Plus, Diane’s Pointless Grilling and Tessa’s Wedding Crisis

Young & Restless needs to revisit the intensity levels it managed to hit surrounding Ashland’s showdown with the Newmans and Rey’s death… things are definitely getting boring again. The long scenes of dialogue often boast some impressive acting, but don’t always drive the plot forward… and I’m not sure what I even want it to drive forward *to* at this point. We need stories to be building anticipation to something big, otherwise, why invest?

Unpopular Opinion?

Diane’s return has been a bit of a bust for me. Why did we get excited for her to come back? Because she’s a villainess. But not only has she not stirred any pots, there’s not even a hint that she is biding her time to plunge her spoon into any. We spent almost an entire episode on the “grilling” of Diane by the Abbotts that didn’t reveal any new information, and which left Kyle in exactly the same position decision-wise that he was in when they started. It has been entertaining to see Diane encounter different people and knock their proverbial socks off, but aside from that, this story needs a little — okay a lotta — something, something.

Saying Goodbye

I was kinda thrown that they showed the before and after of Rey’s memorial, but not the event itself. A little odd. In any case, I think they’re doing a terrific job with Sharon’s grieving process, and I was glad that Chelsea showed up asking to be included. There was more chemistry between her and Rey in recent story than there ever was between him and Sharon, so it was fitting for viewers to be able to witness her sadness, perhaps as a means of mourning the soapy love triangle that might have been.

Do Better

The Winters family storyline continually leaves me shaking my head. I still can’t get over Devon going ahead with this merger, let alone agreeing to remove his own moniker from the company name, which is now Chancellor-Winters. The “intrigue” surrounding the launch is that Devon’s feeling shy about stepping up to a mic. If only Billy did! Every time he shows up in that podcast set there’s a collective groan from the viewers. In developing “drama”, everyone’s worried that Billy feels left out because it’s not his family’s business — except that it is because Chancellor is his mother’s company!

They’ve put Nate, a surgeon, into a high-level marketing position (which we can live with; it’s a soap), but attempts to tease a love triangle and play up his romantic life have left many — but not all — viewers wanting more (see tweets below). I’m hoping things will get messy so as to give these actors a chance to shine.

Running Out of Options

While the plot to get Ashland and Victoria back together seems a little mamby-pamby for the likes of Adam and Sally, it could actually work because they’re clearly still in love. As an added bonus, it would send Victor through the roof. I got a chuckle out of Victor hiring Michael to run Ashland out of town. I mean, what else are they going to do to the guy?!? As Ashland pointed out to Nick in the amusing scene where Nick did his caveman routine and Ashland told him he wasn’t intimidated by him, everything they’ve tried so far hasn’t worked. I genuinely enjoy the back and forth between Locke and the Newmans, but I’m ready for something unexpected to happen. I thought an unlikely “frenemies” situation might develop between Victoria and Sally, but the moment passed.

Wedding Crisis

Speaking of unforeseen twists, Young & Restless spoilers tell us that Tessa will deal with an unexpected crisis on her wedding day. There will also be an unexpected guest. It all sounds dramatic — especially with all the foreshadow-y talk between Crystal and Tessa about their awful childhood — but I’m going to wager that Tessa’s crisis will be something manageable like a blown seam on her dress, and that the unexpected guest will be someone harmless like Allie. Why? Because this soap appears to have forgotten the importance of the “drama” portion of “daytime drama”.
