An Emotional Mariah Makes a Shocking Decision That Abby and Devon Never Saw Coming
Friday, September 17, 2021: Today on The Young and the Restless, Abby's loved ones gather for Dominic's baptism, Devon gives Amanda a sexy welcome back, and Ashley and Victor worry about Abby.
At the ranch, Victor teases Nikki for going overboard for the baptism. She flashes to Nicholas’ christening. Victor muses about the joyous occasion and Nikki asks him to stop and pick up cupcakes on the way to the church. Victor reminds her he’s a busy business tycoon but agrees. He ruminates about Chance not being back yet. Nikki is trying not to get mired down in negativity; Dominic will be just fine. Victor’s concerned about Abby and wonders, “Where is Chance?”
At the Chancellor Estate, Ashley and Nina tell Abby they have everything planned at the church and urge her to relax and enjoy. Abby’s thankful. Nina and Ashley head out as Jack comes in. He wanted to stop by ahead of time with a gift. Abby marvels that this is actually happening. “I am christening my baby boy today.” Jack can see what a wonderful mother she’ll be. Talk turns to Mariah struggling and Jack confides that she extended her leave of absence. They recap what she went through, and Jack insists she’s a survivor with a great support system. Abby feels it will take time and she’s not there yet. She reveals she hired a nanny and hopes it will give Mariah relief so she can focus on herself. Jack thinks she should come back to work. Abby agrees she needs something to focus on.
At Crimson Lights, Mariah assures Tessa she’s feeling better about things, is excited for the ceremony, and really looking forward to Bowie’s christening. She defends her decision to keep the nickname and talks about being part of the circle of people to keep him happy and health. Noticing Tessa’s expression, she asks if she was concerned that she wouldn’t be able to handle today. Tessa’s glad she was able to confide in her previously and urges her to keep it up. Mariah talks about having irrational thoughts and feelings, which were tangled up with giving birth. She insists, “I’m better. Bowie getting christened is amazing.” She’s glad to have an official role in his life. Tessa can’t wait to see her in action.
Devon calls out for Moses at the penthouse, but it’s Amanda who appears. Moses has left for school, so she invites him to join her in bed to welcome her home from her trip. Devon drops the food he brought, and they run upstairs.
After sex, Amanda fills Devon in on her trip with Naya and Imani, which was serene and relaxing until yesterday when Naya was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Devon offers to help find her the best of care. Talk turns the to the baby and Devon grins, “He’s great,” and relays that he might be a baby whisperer. She’s not surprised because he always knows how to make her feel better. Devon has invited Amanda to join him at the baptism and she says she’d love to be part of something so wonderful and knows how important it is to him… the godfather.
In the park, Victor runs into Ashley on route to picking up cupcakes. They marvel at the journey their daughter’s been on and remark on her determination to make her dream come true. Talk turns to Chance. Ashley wishes they could bring him back. Victor agrees; he has other obligations, and this assignment has gone on too long. He suggests they put their heads together and do something about it. Ash nods.
At the church, Abby, carrying Dominic, is joined by Mariah and Devon for the baptism as the officiant mentions Chance’s absence in service for their company. As the ceremony continues and the baby’s name is established, tears appear in Mariah’s eyes. Devon and Mariah respond to the officiant’s questions and the baptism takes place.
Back at the Chancellor Estate, everyone beams as Abby puts the baby in his bassinet and Nikki remarks on him being the living embodiment of Genoa City’s four most prominent families. Abby feels so blessed to have Devon and Mariah as the godparents. Victor proposes a toast to his newest grandson. Tessa notices Mariah struggling. As bubbly is poured, Victor remarks on Abby’s unexpected arrival—he was the first one to hold her. Devon will remember Dominic’s birth for the rest of his life. Nina marvels at Mariah’s incredible bravery and lets everyone know Chance would be here if he could. Ashley recalls Abby’s christening, and they reflect on how proud John and Neil would be if they were there. Abby tells Mariah she’ll always have an important role in her son’s life. Mariah becomes agitated and drops her glass. The baby starts crying. She apologizes and Tessa hustles her out.
In the park, Mariah screams, “What is wrong with me?!” She tells Tessa she thought she could do this, but they’re telling all these stories and… Bowie is already a part of their lives. Their efforts to include her only made it worse. She can’t be around the baby without her heart shattering in a million pieces. “I don’t think I can do this!”
At the Chancellor Estate, Abby gets the baby back to sleep and explains that Mariah is still having emotional fallout from the kidnapping. They decide the best way to support Mariah is to pack up the party. Ashley checks in with Abby, who admits she’s feeling love for the baby and also concern for Mariah and Chance. She’s thankful for her parents’ support.
Mariah and Tessa return, and Devon and Abby say they hope she’s okay. Mariah apologizes to everyone, and they reassure her. Mariah urges them to keep celebrating as she heads upstairs. Victor and Nikki take their leave, followed by Ashley and Jack. Nina leaves the room and Amanda says goodbye to Abby after Devon lets her know he’ll hang around to make sure Mariah’s okay.
Once alone, Abby tells Devon that she feels she’s done everything to make things better for Mariah. They look up as Mariah and Tessa appear on the stairs with their bags. Mariah informs Abby that they’re moving out and she’ll keep pumping milk and storing it. She can see it’s a shock, but she can’t stay there anymore!
At the ranch, Victor is irked about Abby standing alone at the baptism: “Where the hell is her husband?” He sees other dark clouds on the horizon and Nikki gathers he means Mariah. Victor knows she went through a terrible ordeal thanks to Stitch. He worries about Mariah staying in the house while being traumatized. Nikki thinks if Abby could muster a little more strength to give Mariah a helping hand there would be nothing more human.
At the Abbott house, Ashley worries about the situation with Mariah. Jack feels it was a selfless act that Mariah did and she went through hell with Stitch; this might be difficult, but she’s not just a friend, she’s family.
At the Chancellor Estate, Abby reminds Mariah that she agreed to stay for a few months, and nothing has changed. Mariah replies, “Nothing has changed for you.” She gave birth to that baby and everything changed. “I changed.” Abby wipes away tears—she and Devon want to help her. “Anything you need I will do it.” Mariah is aware, but there is nothing Abby can do that will make this easier for her. She was the one who carried that child and talked to him when he was inside her, and protected him. Mariah’s not saying any of this to hurt Abby, but she can’t pretend that this isn’t killing her. “I can’t step back and watch you…” She knows this is how it’s supposed to be, but it hurts so bad. As crazy as it sounds, Mariah just wants to be his mother. “He’s Bowie, my Bowie.” These feelings are the reason she cannot stay there any longer.
Abby understands what Mariah’s saying and is sorry she’s going through this. Mariah asks to say goodbye to Dominic. Abby nods. “Take all the time you need.” Mariah picks up the baby, calls him Bowie, and tells him she has to say goodbye but they’ll always be connected and share a bond like no one else. When the time comes that she’s a little stronger, she’ll be able to be a part of his life… but she has to keep her distance for now, as much as it hurts, so she can get to that place. “Oh my Bowie, I love you so, so much.” Devon, Abby, and Tessa exchange pained glances.
