8 Crimes of Victor Newman Including Gaslighting & Locking a Man in a Basement

From abduction to bribery and obstruction of justice.
When Victor Newman arrived in Genoa City, the character was designed to be nasty, brutish, and have a short run. Things didn’t work out that way and he’s managed to survive for decades longer than originally planned. Recently, Eric Braeden celebrated 40 years on the soap, and with CBS airing a classic episode showcasing Victor’s shocking return, Soaps.com counts down some ways his character’s extra layers and complexity hasn’t stopped him from committing mustache-twirling levels of villainy.
1.
Victor Newman’s first wife, Julia (Meg Bennett), worked as a model to escape from the isolated and controlled life that he had forced on her. Julia’s photographer was Michael Scott (Nick Benedict), and he became smitten with her. When she got pregnant, Victor was sure that the child must be Michael’s. He abducted the photographer and held him captive in a bomb shelter in the basement of the ranch and fed him rats. Julia eventually freed him, but in a fight between the men, she was injured and lost the baby. A test confirmed that the child was Victor’s.
2.
Although one of the most powerful businessmen in the world and always proud of insisting on his status as self-made, this has often-included illegal tactics. In one instance, Victor blackmailed Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc) to pay off retailers to keep Jabot products off the shelves.
3.
In one of the most vicious and extended attacks on Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and his family, Victor Newman hired Peruvian crime lord Marco Annicelli to impersonate Smiling Jack and take over his life. In addition to conspiring with Marco to take over Jabot, Victor also colluded with Kelly Andrews (Cady McClain) to keep Jack captive as she slowly tortured him. Additionally, Victor was an accessory to Marco’s rape of Phyllis (then Gina Tognoni), his attack on Abby (Melissa Ordway), his escape from prison, and the murder of Austin Travers. Even after everything he did to Jack with Marco’s help, Victor went on to blackmail the Abbott with the information that he killed Kelly.
4.
Even in the midst of the Marco mess, Victor still managed to nearly kill Jack while attempting to cover his tracks. He shot Jack and tried to cover it up. He even attempted to smother his old rival while he was in the hospital recovering.

Victor Newman recruited Chloe Mitchell (Elizabeth Hendrickson) to help in his on-again/off-again war with his son Adam (then Justin Hartley). The pair framed Adam for killing Constance Bingham (Sally Kellerman). Although he had a bit of a change of heart and helped Adam escape from prison, Victor also helped Chloe when she had to leave town to escape legal punishment for Adam’s apparent murder.
6.
After using Skye Lockhart (Laura Stone) and Adam (then Michael Muhney) in a scheme to double-cross Jack over shares in the Newman Fund, Skye’s life was destroyed. As recompense, Victor helped her fake her death and framed Adam for it. When he learned that Sharon had tracked Skye to Hawaii, he went after her. Victor stood by and watched Skye fall into a volcano and then burned down her house to destroy any evidence linking her to him.

Controversially, Victor Newman received Colleen Carlton’s (Tammin Sursok) heart when he needed a transplant. She’d been rendered brain dead thanks to a struggle to escape from an unhinged Patty Williams (Stacy Haiduk). Victor had brought Patty to town to terrorize Jack and Phyllis and things had gotten out of control. This wasn’t the first time he caused serious damage to Colleen. Earlier, Victor had commissioned Jeffrey Bardwell (Ted Shackelford) and Gloria Baldwin (Judith Chapman) to publicly humiliate Colleen to ruin her career.

In a bid to prevent Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow) from resuming their frequently dysfunctional relationship, Victor decided to drive her insane. When lightly torturing her by trying to have her bipolar medication tampered with failed, he hired Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes), the doppelganger of Sharon’s dead daughter Cassie, to gaslight her and drive her over the edge.
