Interview: Hunter King on Y&R, Life in Pieces and Wedding Plans

Y&R actress talks drama, comedy and love.
Whether she’s sleeping with her mother’s boyfriend or manipulating Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) into marrying her, Summer Newman is making all kinds of trouble on The Young and the Restless. Soaps.com is happy to report that her portrayer Hunter King is nothing like that in real life. Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, King spoke about being a busy working actress and planning her wedding to her fiancé she met on set.
While conceding Summer is not one of the “sweeter characters” on The Young and the Restless, King doesn’t believe she’s a villain either. “If I’m the person that the audience loves to hate that’s fine by me. As long as they believe it, I’m good.” Returning to Y&R last year after joining the comedy Life in Pieces, King expressed how happy she is to be back on the CBS soap. “As long as they want me, I’m thrilled to be there. We’re a close-knit group and I love being in Genoa City.”

King credited her time at The Young and the Restless as a place she learned a lot about herself and how much she can accomplish if she puts her mind to it, like learning 30 pages of dialogue a day, speaking in front of crowds, and learning to cry on cue. Meanwhile, her job on the CBS sitcom is all about timing and delivery. “You don’t know if they want you to improvise or if you’ll get a laugh from the crew,” she explained. “It’s just a whole other beast from soaps but I love that.”
Offscreen, she is preparing for her wedding to Nico Svoboda, who she met while he was working as a boom operator on The Young and the Restless, but who now works as a cameraman for The Bold and the Beautiful. King and Svoboda became engaged after a “staycation” day touring Los Angeles. All the big details for their big day are nailed down – date, location, dresses – but as King marveled, “There are so many little details, like we need to get trash can covers and ‘Who’s bringing the toilet paper?’” It seems part of the guest list is also prepared as at least one familiar Y&R face will be in attendance. As she’s stayed in touch with Lachlan Buchanan, who played Kyle Abbott from 2015 – 2016, she relayed, “He’s always texting, ‘Miss your face!’ He’s just the cutest thing in the world. He’ll 100 percent be at my wedding.”
