Primetime actor reflects on his new character and Passions and Young and the Restless roles.

Soaps.com recently reported that Justin Hartley was starring in the new movie Little. The actor, also known for playing Fox Crane on Passions, and Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless, is probably best known for his This is Us role as Kevin Pearson, for which he won a second Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. He recently spoke with Soap Opera Digest and acknowledged that winning a SAG award for a second time, “Feels great. It’s the best. There were actors in that room I’ve looked up to for years and years, younger than me and older than me, and to know they’re clicking a box [for us], it’s overwhelming.” In the current season, Kevin and his siblings have discovered their uncle is alive and their father Jack had lied to them about it for years. This has caused his character, an addict, to relapse into drinking. Of his character, Hartley said, “I live Kevin. He’s a complex guy, and he puts on a happy face for others that I believe a lot of us do. I also like the jokey, fun part of Kevin. He’s got a great spirit and a great heart and I think he’s a really good guy – but I also like exploring the darker side of why he is where he is and how that happened.” On playing an addict Hartley feels, “There’s a tremendous sense of responsibility because it’s something that is serious and it’s everywhere. People are dealing with opioids and addiction and depression and mental health. It’s a very real thing, and the result can be fatal. I don’t know anybody who isn’t either affected by it or knows somebody who has been. It’s like cancer. It’s that serious.”

It was recently announced that the show, in its third season, would end after the sixth. When asked about the future, Hartley teased, “The things I know that are happening next year and the year after are incredible.” His character Kevin hasn’t been shown in any of the show’s future segments, and some have wondered if Kevin dies. Hartley commented, “I don’t think that’s the case but I also think you can read something into that. It’s a story point. There’s a reason for that. There is a story that needs to be told that has to do with why he’s not there and if you see him. So, we’ll see. Or, we won’t.”

Recently Hartley’s wife Chrishell Hartley returned to Days of our Lives as Jordan Ridgeway. When asked if he’s been tuning in he said, “Oh, yeah! She’s fantastic. She’s crazy on that show now. It’s great fun to watch.” She recently brought her husband to work with her and shared a photo on Instagram reuniting him with his former Passions co-stars Galen Gering (Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, Rafe Hernandez on Days of our Lives) and Eric Martsolf (Ethan Crane-Bennett, Brady Black on Days of our Lives).

When asked about his thoughts that Young and the Restless was recasting Adam Newman, he felt, “They should. I think that’s great. Adam is a great character.” He still fondly remembers his time in Genoa City and revealed, “I’m friends with Missy [Claire Egan, ex-Chelsea, Young and the Restless] still and we’ll go on about things that we used to laugh about; crazy storylines and stuff you remember vividly.” He also admits he still gets recognized a lot for playing Adam, but also for playing Fox on Passions, and Oliver Queen on Smallville. For now, he’s enjoying his current role on This is Us and notes, “I may never be on a better show in my life. It’d be hard to beat this show.”
