Before her appearance in Genoa City, Phyllis Summers was an obsessed fan of rockstar Daniel Romalotti. After drugging and seducing him, Phyllis showed up in GC in 1994, pregnant, causing Danny and his wife Christine to divorce. Danny then married Phyllis. Phyllis retaliated against Christine's meddling by hitting her and Paul Williams with a car, but no one was hurt and Phyllis was never found out. After Phyllis gave birth, her marriage to Danny was dwindled by lies, affairs and outside interferences. Danny eventually found out that he wasn't the father of little Daniel and divorced Phyllis. However, Danny had already grown to love his son, proved in court that Phyllis was an unfit mother and took Daniel away for years!

After Phyllis moved in with Michael Baldwin, she became jealous of Michael's law clients. She even kidnapped him and left him abandoned in a warehouse to make him pay! Even though Michael broke free and blamed Victor Newman for his abduction, Phyllis admitted that she was responsible and Michael threw her out. However, amazingly, through the years, she and Michael have become best friends.

Phyllis fell in love with Jack Abbott during a time when she was working and spying on him for Victor Newman. After Jack found out, he broke things off with Phyllis and she left Genoa City to move back to New York. Three years later, Phyllis returned and Jack hired her to build the Glow by Jabot website. However, when Jack didn't make an effort to keep her on, Phyllis went to work for Newman!

Phyllis and Jack's relationship survived, and even though she had an ectopic pregnancy and was told she couldn't have any more children, Jack married her in 2001. After Jack found out that he was the father of Diane Jenkins' son, Phyllis found herself at the brunt of Diane's ploys to get Jack back, and was even accused for an arson she didn't commit! With Jack and Phyllis working for opposing companies, the stress on their marriage became immense and Phyllis and Jack ended up in the arms of Diane Jenkins and Damon Porter. They filed for divorce and broke their ties.

In 2003, Phyllis' son Daniel returned to Genoa City and briefly lived with Christine Blair. Although it took a lot of mending, with Jack's newfound friendship and help, Phyllis and Daniel were able to put the past behind them and managed to become close, even after he found out that Danny Romalotti wasn't his biological father.

After Daniel got drunk at a party and passed out, Cassie Newman, an underage driver, drove his car home and got in an accident that ultimately caused her death. Phyllis and Daniel were then kicked out of the Newman tack house, but Jack rode in and saved the day when he offered for them to move into the Abbott mansion with him, also welcoming Phyllis back into his arms. It wasn't until after Daniel's run from the law, his trial facing manslaughter charges, and sudden marriage to Lily Winters that Phyllis was finally able to concentrate on getting her life back in order.

Phyllis and Jack continued to have work related problems and with Nick Newman's marriage on the rocks, Phyllis and Nick began a passionate affair! Although Phyllis was mortified after Daniel walked in on her and Nick, the two couldn't keep their hands off of each other. Phyllis later found out she was pregnant and ended her relationship with Jack. When Phyllis expressed to Nick that she wasn't sure if the baby was his or Jack's, a paternity test was administered but Nick was the only one to view the results and then claimed that he was the father! Nick and Sharon soon divorced. To avoid the six-month waiting period, Nick and Phyllis flew to Mexico and got married! When they returned to Genoa City, they moved into the Newman tack house and Phyllis soon gave birth to their daughter Summer.

Although the couple appeared to have a lifetime of happiness in front of them, Shelia Carter came to town and kidnapped Phyllis, Summer and Fen Baldwin, leaving Phyllis with the threat of losing her identity and her family for good!

Once Sheila was killed, Phyllis wound up doing some time in jail for manslaughter. She shared a cell with Carmen Mesta's murderer, Jana Hawkes. Phyllis got out early on a work program, and assumed her position as Nick's wife as he held vigil over his comatose sister, Victoria.

Phyllis and Nick began a fashion magazine with their exes, Jack and Sharon, but the foursome had trouble making decisions, so Nick and Phyllis bought out the other couple. Phyllis experienced insecurity over her marriage when Nick and Sharon began spending time together parenting their teenage son, Noah, and even ended up in Paris together. She pushed Brad to pursue Sharon and he later died saving Noah after visiting Sharon at the cabin. Nick made it through the snowstorm to tell Sharon what happened with Brad and Noah and they made love. Phyllis guessed correctly that Nick had strayed and he admitted it. After Nick had sex with Sharon again, Phyllis and Nick separated. During this time, Phyllis went crazy in Sharon's room at the Club, and cut up all her clothes. When she realized Sharon had been stealing and had her arrested, Nick accused Phyllis of setting her up. Phyllis helped Sharon beat the charges, but later, Sharon turned up pregnant, with Nick being one of three possible fathers. Phyllis issued an ultimatum to Nick - her or Sharon. Nick had sex with Sharon and Phyllis had sex with Jack. Nick told Phyllis to go ahead and file for divorce - she told him to do it himself. Meanwhile, Sharon's paternity test revealed that Nick was the father. When Summer suffered an allergic reaction to a peanut butter cookie (caused by Mary Jane, who was jealous of Phyllis and Jack) and nearly died, Nick and Phyllis were brought back together. Phyllis next got involved in helping to reveal that Ashley's baby was actually Nick and Sharon's child, Faith, that they had been told died at birth and was instrumental in proving that Adam had done the switch.

Phyllis' next adventure saw her nearly killed by Sheila's sister, Sarah, when she helped Michael save Lauren, who had been captured by the crazy woman. Sarah's niece, Daisy, was also involved. Phyllis' life with Nick suffered after he began 'saving' Sharon on a regular basis. Phyllis used Deacon Sharpe to push Nick away, and later saw Nick kiss Christine Blair in Jimmy's Bar. After that, Phyllis began writing a nasty blog called 'A Woman Scorned', which exposed the dirt on other Genoa City women. Phyllis and Nick divorced and Phyllis wound up back with Jack. Just as they settled into their newfound relationship, Diane showed up and caused problems. Daisy also returned to town, pregnant with Phyllis' grandchild. Phyllis took in a pregnant Daisy, but she later went to live with Daniel because her presence was keeping Phyllis and Summer apart. In the meantime, Phyllis published a nasty story about Sharon, and she and Jack got caught up in the goings-on surrounding the death of Skye Newman, which led to her and Jack to Hawaii. Sharon was charged and took off. She was presumed dead, but was actually with Sam. During this time, Phyllis slept with Nick and after confessing to Jack, they broke up. Later, Phyllis learned that Billy and Victoria had adopted Daisy and Daniel's baby. Daniel was prepared to let them keep the child, but Phyllis got Daisy onside in order to get custody. Phyllis and Daniel went through a bitter time over this. Phyllis had gone back to work as a reporter and exposed the fact that Adam was holding out evidence that would clear Sharon's name after she turned up alive. Around this time, Phyllis also became a suspect in Diane's death for a period of time after Deacon spotted her in the park with the victim previous to her demise.

Phyllis' life took another turn when her sister, Avery, arrived in Genoa City. Phyllis was very resistant to a relationship, but Nick began getting to know Avery. Phyllis was furious when Avery represented Daisy. During this time, Phyllis had a flirtation with Ronan, and Nick and Avery shared an embrace. Phyllis saw it and had sex with Ronan as a response. Nick ended up with Avery, and Avery and Phyllis began a new argument regarding the guilt or innocence of their dying father. When they both went to see him on his deathbed, Avery was devastated to learn that Phyllis had been right about their father all along - he had bilked people out of a fortune and lied about it. Phyllis and Ronan paired up romantically and also worked together to find Diane's true killer. Nick was still with Avery, but was jealous. Phyllis and Nick ended up making love when he showed up at the Penthouse. Avery softened toward Phyllis following their father's death and Nick and Phyllis reconciled. Ronan left town. Phyllis became pregnant by Nick, but by then was tangling with Ricky and Daisy, who had uncovered her past history via Dr. Tim Reid. Daisy stood by and did nothing when Phyllis miscarried on her wedding day. Eventually, Phyllis wound up being arrested in front of her family for running down Paul and Christine with her car years earlier. Avery got Phyllis out on bail and Nick stood by her. However, when more incriminating details came out and it became obvious Phyllis had lied, Avery dumped her as a client. Phyllis confessed all to Ronan, who risked his career to help her. They made love and Nick moved out with Summer. Phyllis beat the charges because the judge ruled the statute of limitations on the crime had run out. Phyllis broke things off with Ronan and ended up helping Jack battle a pill addiction. She saw him through it all, and they revived their relationship once he was clean. Nevertheless, Phyllis was very upset to hear Nick and Avery were engaged. The next thing to deal with was Nick's shocking reveal that he hadn't actually taken the paternity test when Summer was born and that a new one revealed he was not her biological father. Phyllis realized that it must be Jack, but in the meantime, she kissed Kyle to thwart his burgeoning relationship with Summer - now his half-sister. Phyllis finally told Jack about Summer after he confronted her about Kyle. Phyllis helped to deal with the fallout, and has later horrified to overhear Sharon, at Cassie's grave, confess to having changed the DNA results. Phyllis took off to tell Nick at the gala and Sharon followed. They had a confrontation in the stairwell that resulted in Phyllis falling and lapsing into a coma. Phyllis was moved to a facility in Georgia, near to where Daniel had relocated, and Jack and Summer visited her faithfully. At one point, Jack had to tell her he was moving on with someone else when he became involved with Kelly. Phyllis was still in the coma, so may or may not have heard.

When Victor learned that Phyllis knew a secret Sharon was keeping from Nick, he manipulated to get Phyllis into an experimental drug trial and she came out of her coma. Before she could be assessed, or Victor could get to Georgia, she left the facility on her own steam and made her way back to Genoa City hitchhiking. Once in town, she visited the Abbott mansion only to find things had changed. There she also saw Nick and Sharon's wedding invitation. She made her way to Sharon's house where she spotted the traffic violation ticket Sharon got the night they fought in the stairwell. Phyllis took a hotel room and showed up at Nick and Sharon's wedding, halting the proceedings just before they were pronounced husband and wife. She then collapsed before she could say or do anything else.

After Phyllis came around in the hospital, she told Jack she remembered his proposal when she was in a coma. This prompted Jack to keep mum about his new relationship with Kelly and Phyllis later found out on her own from his cellphone. Phyllis also remembered about Sharon's DNA switching and confronted her in the very stairwell she had fallen in when confronting her before. Nick, Jack, and Victor were present as Sharon confessed she had led them to believe Summer was Jack's daughter when she is actually Nick's. Phyllis helped break the news to Summer. Phyllis went on to develop a rivalry with Kelly that ended in Phyllis being arrested for attempted murder.
