Born in Hollywood, California, Nia later moved to and grew up in West Covina, California. Performing at a young age, she remained an 'A' student throughout school and starred as Bloody Mary in her school production of "South Pacific".

On a music scholarship, Nia went on to attend UCLA and performed for Liberace's opening act in Las Vegas on the weekends. After realizing acting was her passion, she dropped out of college and worked numerous jobs to pay for acting lessons. While going to a friend's audition, Nia was stopped by a producer who gave her a spot in the play "Music Shop".

From there on, Nia made many guest appearances in shows such as "Hardcastle and McCormick," and "T.J. Hooker". It wasn't until 1981 when she landed her first starring role in the HBO film "A Single Light". However, Nia's most memorable role was playing Nicole Chapman in the 1982 television hit series "Fame".

In her free time, Nia enjoys hiking, tandem surfing, roller blading, skiing and charity work.
