Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, Maitland and her family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona when she was just seven. By age thirteen she had already appeared in numerous community theater and dinner theater productions. She attended Arizona State University, majoring in music and theater. Maitland moved to Los Angeles in 1978 and worked in night clubs while taking acting classes at the Los Angeles Film Industry Workshop.

On television, Maitland has appeared in several made-for-television movies, and had a supporting role in one film.

During Beth's free time, she and her husband raise and train her five horses. She also enjoys swimming, racquetball and bicycling. Maitland devotes her time to charitable organizations, such as the American Heart Association and The American Cancer Society.
