All roads currently lead to Monaco, where Bold & Beautiful‘s Steffy and Finn will finally reunite. Of course, what happens next is the big question, given that the show hasn’t exactly got a lot else going on. Meanwhile, even as the show prepared to do what it does best, it also managed to throw in a few examples of what it does worst. And don’t get me started on what’s about to happen between… well, too late, I’ve started. So let’s just dive in, shall we?
Spit It Out, Woman!
I get that Li was majorly traumatized by everything she’d gone through, but I kinda wanted someone to slap her and, like Cher in Moonstruck, shout, “Snap out of it!” I’m not a World Renowned Psychiatrist like our beloved Dr. Taylor, but Li’s trauma didn’t ring particularly true to me. She could clearly remember recent events, but had somehow forgotten how to form words?

This was another of those weeks where it would have been extremely helpful for Bold & Beautiful to play a B-story. You’ve heard me say it often enough, so repeat it with me: Having characters talk about the A-story is not the same thing as having a B-story. If viewers aren’t interested in the only story you’re telling — or, as happened this week, it’s simply spinning its wheels so as not to get where it’s going too quickly — there’s absolutely nothing to keep them entertained.

Road Trip!
It’s almost impossible to think about Bold & Beautiful without remembering some of the incredible location shoots the show has done over the years. From a fashion show aboard the Queen Mary to Steffy and Wyatt’s wedding aboard Bill’s yacht, and from Australia to Monte Carlo, this show has literally taken us around the world. And every time it does, it’s in order for a big plot point or payoff, usually of the romantic variety. Even Quinn biking down the beach was so that she could stake her claim on Carter before he wed Paris.

Sure, their marriage hit rough seas almost immediately, but Wyatt and Hope (then Kimberly Matula) kicked things off in style on Bill’s yacht!

No other soap does it better. What started this week and will continue into next week proves it yet again. Not for the first time, the show figured out how to combine their annual trip to Monaco with a culminating storyline to get the most bang for their buck.
Sense and Nonsense
Having spent most of the week with one character after another spitting out repetitive and occasionally mind-numbing exposition, the show decided to hit the fast-forward button on Thursday. Within minutes, Li and Bill burst in to save Finn, who by episode’s end was on a Monaco-bound jet. Unfortunately, the “defy logic” button is clearly right next to the one marked “fast forward,” and someone’s fingers hit both at the same time.

“I’ve been laying in garbage for weeks and look beat up, but Steffy is in a cush rehab center and needs you. Go to her!”

How else to explain that Liam, who knew full well that Sheila had an accomplice, didn’t bother to tell this to his dad? Or that Li, who’d just been reunited with her son, would send him off with Bill and not say, “Hey, wait a few minutes for the police to arrive, and we can all go together.” Or that Bill, whose newly-developed sense of compassion caused him to take in a total stranger, would think, “You know what’s a great idea? I’ll leave the woman I just rescued with this raging psychopath. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Here We Go Again!
Meanwhile, I’m a little shocked by what’s about to unfold. Who out there thought that Ridge had finally chosen between Brooke and Taylor, and that we’d be moving away from that? Who assumed that when Deacon made it clear he’s a way better alternative than Ridge, Taylor got the message loud and clear?

“I mean, I have an extra 10 minutes if you wanna make out.”

Well, anyone who raised their hands for either of those questions is going to be really displeased to learn that next week, Taylor yet again decides that Ridge is the only fish in the sea. Apparently, we can’t have shiny new things (like Taylor and Deacon) because we have to keep pretending that the World Renowned Psychiatrist doesn’t have even the smallest bit of self-respect.

Random Thoughts
• I’m a big fan of Vincent Irizarry, but what, exactly, was the point of trotting him out as a glorified day player? Dr. Armstrong offered no insight into Li’s condition whatsoever, doing little more than the equivalent of saying, “Have her take two aspirin and take a nice, hot shower.”

“She has a pulse and… would you look at the time? I have a tee-time!”

• You know your show is chock full of rich people when two private jets are flying off to the same destination.
• I had to laugh at the sexy saxophone music that underscored Mike setting Sheila free. Poor, horned-up Mike, duped again by a woman he’s obsessed over for decades. Come to think of it, why did he help her escape in the first place? Wouldn’t it have made more sense for the lovesick jailer to keep her behind bars, where he had total control and could see her whenever he wanted?
