Deconstructing B&B: Big May Sweeps reveal falls flat for some viewers

“The Bold and the Beautiful” for May 9 - 13:

Many viewers were dismayed that Thomas reacted to the news that Douglas was his son with more of a whimper than a roar. Why no real fireworks? There was no return of the Avants after the Julius secret coming out, and the other storylines featured Rick harping about Ridge, and the Steffy/Wyatt/Liam triangle limping along toward another Quinn sighting. Thoughts:

This is the way it has to be.
We left off in last week’s Deconstructing B&B, anticipating a huge Thomas/Ridge showdown featuring an irate Thomas putting Ridge in his place for his deception. But what actually happened in this storyline was kind of a letdown. The ‘showdown’ was mostly one-sided, with Ridge talking over Thomas and repeating over and over that Douglas was his son. Thomas left the office in a non-committal way and then did a runner with the baby. He summoned the hysterical Caroline up to Big Bear, where she proceeded to coo, cry, cajole and guilt-trip Thomas in an effort to get him to continue with the charade that he is Douglas’ brother. Thomas ranted some about ‘King Ridge’, but then actually agreed to deny his son. Viewers really couldn’t believe that after all of the time spent waiting for this secret to come out, they were denied a truly explosive confrontation between Thomas and Ridge, or that Thomas was allowing himself to be steamrolled. Where’s Taylor when you need her? Viewers weighed in on Twitter:

He’s stealing my birthright!
Of course if Thomas had physically attacked Ridge and announced from the rooftops that Douglas was his son, there would no longer be an opportunity for Rick to do the honors and expose Ridge’s secret to the rest of the world, and that’s clearly where this is headed. While Ridge was busy blaming Katie for ‘sticking her nose in’, Rick spent time with each of his parents blaming Ridge for just about anything you can think of. Even viewers who like Rick are tired of his endless whining about Ridge…and Maya’s freakin’ portrait. Let it go already! That said, most are eager to see him blow Ridge out of the water, and are looking forward to it.

Where Are They Now: Bobbie Eakes in Distortion

Accept it.
The Steffy/Wyatt/Liam struggle continued, and aside from Bill telling Steffy to honor her commitment to Wyatt (as if), the conversations were feeling pretty repetitive. For many, it’s just not working because no one actually buys Steffy as a confused, wilting flower that doesn’t know her own mind, or that she wouldn’t drop Wyatt in a hot minute to reunite with Liam. It’s just too much of a stretch. There was a lot of anticipation for the Quinn/Steffy confrontation on Friday’s episode, but instead of being satisfying, things just go weirder. Now we’re supposed to believe that Liam cares for Quinn in some twisted way, and she loves him of course…so can you see where this is going? The new mantra is that Steffy and Liam wouldn’t have ended up together anyway…please. The only satisfying thing that happened here was when Steffy screamed at Quinn as she was arrested that she would never have her support. A spark of the old Steffy at least!
