Is Bold & Beautiful’s Heather Tom Leaving? ‘I Don’t Want to Obligate Myself to Anything’
Few and far between have been Heather Tom’s Bold & Beautiful appearances lately — a development that has led fans to fear that she’s on her way out as Katie. They know that the six-time Emmy winner has begun directing, not only at the soap but at primetime series like Good Trouble and Dynasty. But does her new career necessarily mean an end to her old one?
In a word, no. As much as Tom enjoys working behind the camera, “I don’t want to obligate myself to anything,” she tells Soap Opera Digest. What’s more, “I love Katie, and I love acting. I’ve been doing it my whole life, and yet directing is really exciting.
“I’ve always wanted to keep learning no matter what,” she adds, “and this is an exciting way to do that.”

In a way, Bold & Beautiful led “directly” to Tom’s new endeavor. In 2016, she asked one of the soap’s helmers, Cynthia J. Popp, to be her mentor. With executive producer/headwriter Bradley Bell’s full support, Tom shadowed Popp and eventually was accepted into CBS’ directors program. Before, “I had this idea that I knew what the basics were — I had no idea!” Tom exclaims. “I can’t believe how many moving parts there are. It’s a miracle that the show gets put out every day, and it’s a testament to all of the people who work in all of the different aspects of getting the show out.”
