These characters know the true meaning of “girl power.”

As Women’s History Month reaches its conclusion, Soaps.com is putting a twist on the occasion by honoring 10 standout women in daytime-television history.

We know. When we think of soaps, we generally think of the supervixens and strumpets, the scheming baby-swappers and felonious femmes fatales. Let’s be real — they are fun!

But mixed in among them are a whole lot of female characters that we wouldn’t mind our daughters aspiring to be like. Not just halo-clad heroines who would sooner break a nail than a rule but flawed individuals who had (or, in some cases, still have) the chutzpah to fight the good fight. It’s them that we celebrate today.

And just who are they?

Some characters are less role models than, um, parole models.

They’re first ladies of a sort from not only The Young and the Restless, General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful and Days of Our Lives but a couple of bygone sudsers, too. Included among them are a Salem shrink who went through a devil of a time; a Genoa City spitfire who didn’t just make something of herself, she made something impressive; an Angeleno whose strength enabled her to let her inner truth out; and a Port Charles nurse whose theme song could well be “Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves.”
