What the Daytime Emmys’ Return to TV Must Get Right In Order to Satisfy Soap Fans

Soaps matter now more than ever!
Soap fans have a lot to be excited about where this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards are concerned. After all, they’re not only going to be shown on television, and they’re not only going to be aired in primetime, but an actual major network will be doing the honors. (Nothing against outlets like Pop or HLN, who picked up some of the slack in recent years, but…)
Now, we’d never want to look a gift horse in the mouth. However, we want to offer the good folks at CBS a little heartfelt advice: To paraphrase drag superstar RuPaul Charles, “Don’t mess it up!”
We’re sure that someone out there is tuning in to find out if Ocean Treks With Jeff Corwin is named Outstanding Travel and Adventure Program. But let’s not forget which genre has the kind of passionate fan base who lit up social media five minutes after the nominations were announced, and who will be live-tweeting the entire broadcast.
Did I mention that said fan base is incredibly opinionated? One false move, and you could wind up on the wrong end of a tweetstorm.
Never fear, though, because their demands are few and fairly easy to meet. Make sure soaps get the respect they have earned. Feel free to poke fun at the genre’s tropes, but do not mock them. (As Mama used to remind us, “You can say anything, as long as you say it with love.”)
Most importantly, and this is a big one: Do not — I repeat, do not — cut the clips, whether in the acting, writing or drama categories. In fact, why not use them to infuse a bit of glamour into an evening that, due to the constraints of putting together a virtual broadcast, might wind up looking a bit unintentionally low-budget?
We don’t want to seem like the ungrateful guests who come into your home and then critique the wine. But we’ve seen our beloved genre treated like the proverbial redheaded stepchild once too often. Show soaps and their fans a little love, and trust us when we say it will be returned tenfold.
