Romantic, historical, and family dramas that will have Hallmark viewers hooked.

If you enjoy Hallmark movies, Soaps.com has a list of compelling series that boast romance, settings, and characters you may want to indulge in.

1. Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey is a British historical drama television series set in the early 20th century that depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic servants in the post-Edwardian era—with the great events in history having an effect on their lives and on the British social hierarchy. Critically acclaimed, the family drama and romantic liaisons are perfect for those who are drawn in by Hallmark films. Downton Abbey can be viewed on Amazon Prime and Vudu.

2. Hart of Dixie

Hart of Dixie follows the story of Dr. Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson), a New Yorker who, after her dreams of becoming a heart surgeon fall apart, accepts an offer to work as a general practitioner in the fictional town of Bluebell, Alabama. Chock full of romance, drama, and wit, viewers will fall in love with the cast of small-town characters and find themselves rooting for their favorite love pairing. It’s like a Hallmark movie that lasts four seasons. Watch Hart of Dixie on YouTube, Netflix, or Vudu.

3. Heartland

Heartland is a multi-generational family drama set in Alberta, Canada that centers on the lives of protagonist Amy Fleming’s (Amber Marshall) family and friends, who all have complicated pasts and different dreams as they move forward together through both happy and trying times. The ranch setting is reminiscent of many Hallmark movies. Those who are intrigued can watch Heartland on Amazon Prime and Netflix.

4. Outlander

Outlander, is a historical drama involving time travel based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, and focuses on a married former World War II nurse, Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), who in 1946 finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743. There she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings. Outlander definitely has more violence and sexual themes than a Hallmark movie, but the romance and family drama is spectacular, and the series is positively addictive. Currently in its fifth season, Outlander seasons 1 – 4 can be found on Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Vudu.

5. Virgin River

Virgin River is a Netflix original series adapted from the novels of the same name by Robyn Carr, and surrounds the story of Melinda ‘Mel’ Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a Los Angeles nurse practitioner and midwife, who accepts a job in a remote California town to escape the tragedies in her past. There she meets an interesting cast of characters and falls into the orbit of ex-military man, Jack (Martin Henderson), who is fighting demons of his own. Both the setting and the chemistry between Mel and her past and present love interests are bound to appeal to Hallmark movie aficionados. Virgin River’s first season is on Netflix, with a second season coming up.
