With all of the flashbacks on Guiding Light lately and the nostalgia for the “golden era” of the past getting heavier than ever, an interesting project from that past has suddenly come back into focus. In the early 80’s, many of those who worked on the series put on the guises of their well-known characters to poke fun at the series while it was riding the soap zeitgeist. Teaming up together, the performers created a project called Guiding Plight. Made up of sketches and fragments which tear apart all of the cliches of the genre and mock the things their characters are best known for, it proved to be a wonderfully entertaining skewering of the show, complete with crude spoofs of commercials and some genuinely odd moments. Characters you can expect to see, although in a way you may never expected to see them, include: Alan Spaulding, Diane Ballard, Hope Bauer, Rita Bauer, Holly Thorpe, Ed Bauer, Jackie Marler, Mike Bauer and Ann Jeffers.

The project was spearheaded by Marsha Clarke, the actress who played Hillary Bauer from 1978 until 1984. Since leaving the show, she has appeared on fellow soaps One Life to Live and The Young and the Restless as well as more than a dozen other shows. She can currently be glimpsed on Days of Our Lives playing the role of Judge Fitzpatrick.
