Welcome to Soaps.com’s 35th Daytime Emmy Awards live blog for Guiding Light.
Once again the show has been lucky enough to garner a bevy of nominations across the board. The series already took home three trophies at the 35th Annual Daytime Creative Arts and Entertainment Awards last week, but tonight viewers will be tuning in to ABC networks across the continent to see if their favorite actors will take home one of these prestigious awards.
Be on the watch for Crystal Chappell (Olivia Spencer) and Nicole Forester (Cassie Lewis) as they compete for Outstanding Lead Actress, as well as Gina Tognoni (Dinah Marler) and her on-screen brother Daniel Cosgrove (Bill Lewis) as they look for wins in the Supporting Actress and Actor categories. Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan Randall) is also up for Outstanding Young Actor once again and the show has nods in the majority of the major categories. Will this be another win for Outstanding Daytime Drama like last year’s surprise tie with Y&R? Or will they take the top honor home alone?
Check back with Soaps.com throughout the night, the weekend and the next week for more backstage Daytime Emmy coverage from our crew at the Emmys, Christine Fix, Lori Wilson, Shannon Burrell and Shaun Proulx.
8:00 PM: During the opening sketch, we got to see former Gus, Ricky Paull Goldin, showing off a little of his comic chops while the show’s host Sherri Shepherd ran through the sets of all the ABC soaps searching for co-host Cameron Mathison. As the evening’s opening ran, we caught a glimpse of most of the cast of GL sitting around a table together. Each of the shows was set up at their own table. Mathison wandered through the over to the AMC table to speak to Ricky Paull Goldin. Former Harley Cooper Beth Ehlers was seated beside him and they joked about how she couldn’t resist following him onto AMC from after he left GL.
8:10 PM: Anthony Geary and Laura Wright were on hand to introduce the nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actress. We saw Gina Tognoni (Dinah Marler) in a lovely red dress and a clip of her crying to Mallet about how she didn't know her own name. Anthony Geary read her name and she walked up the stage to take the first award of the night. She thanked God, spoke of how proud she is to be part of the show and to work with such a talented crew. She thanked her family and spoke of how proud she is of Daytime, praying that it goes on for a million more years.
8:15 PM: Backstage, Gina Tognoni talked to Sherri about how awful she feels for not mentioning her fiancee during her speech. She starts telling her soon-to-be husband Joe how much she loves him before Marcy Rylan (Lizzie Spaulding) and Daniel Cosgrove (Bill Lewis) were announced as the next presenters. They took the stage to present an award for Outstanding Talk Show: Informative. He was wearing a simple black suit with a white shirt while Marcy wore a striking long dress that started white around the neck and slowly changed color until it hit the floor in dark blue. Marcy explained what these shows involved and they presented the award to Tyra Banks.
8:25 PM: Y&R's Doug Davidson, Don Diamant and Melody Thomas arrived on stage to announce the nominees for Younger Actor in a Drama Series. Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan Randall) won. This was his second win in the category in which he has received four consecutive nominations. He came out of the crowd after kissing on-screen mother Kim Zimmer (Reva Shayne). He thanked everyone at the show and his mother before tearfully dedicating the award to his deceased father. Melody led him off the stage.
8:45 PM: Darnell Williams, GL's former Griggs, was on stage to give the award for Outstanding Daytime Series Directing Team. The award went to One Life to Live.
8:48 PM: Sherri sat down with Kim Zimmer (Reva Shayne) and Robert Newman (Josh Lewis). Sherri joked about Reva marrying all the Lewis men and how illegal it would be in most places. Kim joked that there is only one Lewis man left for her to take. "He used to be little Bill, but now he's big Bill," she laughs. They then showed the highlight reel for the series which was broken into segments about love ("love can redeem us, be a transition, can hurt, can be the end, etc.). These ranged from the randier moments of the past year to the most melancholy and featured most of the actors showing off their chops.
9:00 PM: Days of Our Lives' Nadia Bjorlin, Alison Sweeney and Arianne Zucker were on stage to announce the nominees for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role. Daniel Cosgrove's clip was shown. It was the scene of his "intervention". The award went to Y&R's Kristoff St. John who graciously paid tribute to all of the other nominees as he accepted the award.
9:03 PM: General Hospital's Bradford Anderson and Kirsten Storms were on hand to announce the nominees for Outstanding Writing team. Guiding Light was nominated but One Life to Live took it home.
9:40 PM: Tyra Banks came onto the stage to announce the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama. Crystal Chappell (Olivia Spencer) was the first GL nominee announced. They showed a clip of her ranting with her wedding dress. Nicole Forester (Cassie Lewis) was the third nominee announced. Her clip showed her screaming at Alan while holding up a picture of Tammy. Both actresses looked lovely in some flattering and subtle dresses. However, Jeanne Cooper from Y&R won. Although the longest tenured actress on the show, this was the first time she took home the award. She received a standing ovation from the crowd as she went up the stairs joking, "I bet you thought I had died."
9:54 PM: Barbara Walters walked on stage in a blue dress to present the award for Outstanding Daytime Drama. She talked about how daytime dramas have always been on the cutting edge of entertainment, tackling important themes and issues. Although Guiding Light was nominated, the award went to General Hospital.
