Most of the on-screen romances we see on Chicago Fire are fiery, passionate and practically instantaneous. But one couple’s love story was more slow-burn than white-hot: Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd’s relationship on Chicago Fire, also known as Stellaride.
Despite their obvious chemistry, Lieutenant Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) took forever (okay, three seasons) to get together. And even when they did, it seemed like something always got in the way. Whether it was life-or-death rescues, poor timing or seriously psychopathic exes (we’re looking at you, Grant), Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd’s relationship on Chicago Fire was anything but smooth sailing.
While their relationship may have been tumultuous, it was impossible not to root for Stellaride—especially when they’re declaring their undying love for each other in the middle of a burning building. So if you’re like us and you can’t get enough of this epic romance, take a look at their relationship timeline and see just how far these two have come.

Severide left Firehouse 51 (and Chicago Fire) in Season 11, Episode 14, to train at “the best arson investigation training program in the world” in Alabama — or so he told Kidd and the rest of the firehouse. Later in the season, Kidd learns that Severide was no longer at the training program in Alabama and had transferred to help with an ATF (alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives) investigation because of how impressed his superiors were with his performance. The move was unbeknownst to Kidd who questions her relationship with Severide.
Season 10, Episode 22: Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd Get Married

After six seasons of hook-ups, break-ups, and make-ups, everyone’s favorite Chicago Fire couple finally got hitched. Severide and Kidd married during the Season 10 finale, surrounded by their Firehouse 51 family and friends — even though best man Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) almost didn’t make it to the ceremony. The episode wasn’t without a few hiccups, with the main one being that their venue suddenly became unavailable. But luckily, Casey stepped in to save the day and found a boat captain to wed our two favorite firefighters.
Season 9, Episode 15: Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd Get Engaged

What perhaps could go down as the most intense proposal in TV history, Severide pops the question to his long-time love in the most fitting yet terrifying place: a burning building. While rescuing an employee from a restaurant that’s caught flame, a formerly unsure Severide decides that now is time to get down on one knee. As the building burns around them, Kidd accepts his proposal with an ecstatic “hell yes,” and they kiss.
Season 7, Episode 22: Kelly Severide Proves Himself to Stella Kidd

Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd’s relationship on Chicago Fire during the seventh season was probably the hardest to watch. Earlier in the season, Kidd breaks up with Severide after he continuously pushes her away following the death of his father. He reacts by spending the rest of the season trying to be a better man for her — a strategy that ultimately works in his favor. By the Season 7 finale, he’s proved himself to be the man Stella needs, and they decide to give their relationship another shot.

In Season 7, Episode 6, Severide receives shocking news that his father passed away from a massive stroke. Never good with handling personal tragedy, he reacts the way he has in the past by distancing himself from those he loves. However, Kidd is not about to play this game. After a few weeks of watching him push her away, she breaks it off by telling him: “I have been the lifeline for a drowning man, and I will never do that again. I love you, but I can’t be with you anymore.”

After weeks of built-up tension and pretending that they were both fine just being friends/roommates (as if), Severide finally decides to man up and tell Stella how he really feels. This is, of course, all thanks to Casey, who calls him out for obviously being in love with her. This wakes Severide up, and he goes to see Stella while she’s working at Molly’s. When she demands that he tells her how he feels, he responds by kissing her — and the rest is history.

This is where said built-up tension begins. After her landlord evicts her from her apartment, Severide offers Kidd a place to stay until she can find something else — so naturally, she moves in with him. At this point, they’ve agreed to be platonic friends, but their newfound proximity definitely had fans of the show shipping them hard.
Season 5, Episode 2: Stella Kidd Ends Her Romance With Kelly Severide

You would think surviving an attack from an ex-husband would bring two people together, but in the case of Stellaride, it only pushed them further apart. When Kidd’s ex, Grant Smith (Guy Burnet), kicks her outside of Molly’s, Severide rescues her by hitting Smith over the head with a pipe. But his heroic efforts are short-lived when he learns that Kidd is choosing not to press charges against Smith. When Severide tries to talk to her about it, she basically tells them that they’re not a couple and it’s not his problem to deal with.
Season 4, Episode 23: Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd Sleep Together For the First Time

The moment every Stellaride Stan had been waiting for came during the Season 4 finale. After sharing a passionate first kiss a few episodes earlier, Kidd and Severide finally share their first night together at her place. The only downside? Her crazy-possessive ex-husband is also there, hiding in the shadows with a knife.

The foreshadowing for Stellaride’s romance had been building all season, and it finally paid off in the 21st episode. While fixing the wall her fancy ice maker ruined at Molly’s, Severide walks in and offers to help. Only instead of fixing, they end up sharing a sweet and passionate kiss — one that was long overdue.
Fast forward to today, and Severide and Kidd are married. After years of tension, heartache, and drama, their relationship has finally found its footing — and we can’t wait to see what happens next.

Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd’s relationship on Chicago Fire started way back in Season 4 when Kidd first arrived at Firehouse 51. We quickly learn that the pair had originally met back during Fire Academy and that Severide had quite a crush on her. In a later episode, Kidd shares a story about how he surprised her at her home with a grand romantic gesture that involved rappelling down from skylights and Frank Sinatra, only to learn that she was indeed married.
