The Most Unexpected Couple to Come Out of Jake’s Death on Days of Our Lives Could Be… Plus, Did Gwen *Actually* Kill Abigail?
Days of Our Lives’ big twist with Jake’s death ended up being pretty straightforward, but there still may be a few surprises in store. One of the biggest ones, though, might be that love is finally starting to blossom in Salem! But the big question this week is: Are we getting closer to finding out Abigail’s murder or are the waters just getting muddier?
One Twin, Two Twin, Dead Twin… New Twin?
I’ll readily admit my Stefano theory from last week was a long shot, but I was still hoping that the twist they had in store for us wasn’t the obvious one. It was. Jake’s out, Stefan’s in.
More: What Days of Our Lives *must* tell fans
I think the biggest surprise with this “twist” is that there are no brain chips or “essence” or any crazy mystical explanation of how Jake’s being switched out for his brother. Yeah, there’s a strange blue, glowy Iron Man thing in Stefan’s chest, but at the end of the day, we’re basically dealing with a transplant story. Four years of unmonitored life support aside, that’s almost normal.

What’s more interesting is what’s going on with the fallout from Jake. Though I can’t help but feel like Gabi’s relative callousness is more serving plot than anything else. Yeah, she’s being called out on it, but still, the point seems more to set her up for a Stefan reunion, than anything else. But I remember how hurt and angry Gabi was when she thought Jake betrayed her. Maybe Stefan is her true love, but her feelings for Jake were not shallow, so why is her reaction?
On the other hand, now that Jake’s toast, I’m kind of loving him and Ava together. Their relationship is more real dead than it ever was alive, and her mourning feels genuine. But she’s still shrewd and pragmatic enough to understand that she’s got to look out for her own best interests now that he’s gone. She’s acting more like how I feel Gabi should be acting.
Plus, getting to see the mafia princess tangle with the DiMeras should be fun. As she pointed out, their hands aren’t any cleaner than her own. And moving in to the DiMera mansion at EJ’s invitation? I smell a chemistry test coming up. The son of the Phoenix and daughter of a mob kingpin? If those two could put aside their enmity, they’ve got it in them to rule all of Salem — at the very least. Actually, they could make a fun love/hate couple enmity and all. If the show pulls it off, this could end up being the best thing to come out of the Jake/Stefan debacle.
And the Killer Is…
Xander and Sarah: Private Eyes is what I’ve been waiting for. OK, maybe I didn’t see them playing detective, but I am so here for it. The show finally got back to showing why fans fell in love with them to begin with. They’re so much fun together, even when dumpster diving. Actually, especially when dumpster diving. I cannot wait to see more of these old school screwball comedy scenes with them!

As for Gwen: Really? That mask would be so easy to destroy. Shred it, cut it apart, melt it. I don’t care, just do better than a dumpster outside your hotel. Still, her casual way of disposing of it didn’t make it seem like murder evidence. Unless she’s that blasé about killing her own sister.
I think that Gwen was there the night of the murder, but I don’t buy that she did it. She may, though, have seen something, but having snuck out of prison and broken into the DiMera mansion in a Sarah mask, she can’t say anything without getting herself into trouble. Admittedly, though, I’m not sure what she would be doing there impersonating Sarah if not to frame her, but maybe she planned on killing Abigail but found someone else beat her to it?
Someone like Leo? He’s the last suspect left after Gwen… that we know of. But also, his confronting Gwen felt more like fishing to find out what she might know than anything else.
Master Plan or Dead In the Water?
What is Orpheus’ game? About all he seemed to accomplish in asking Marlena for help with Evan was riling John up. And that just seems like a bad move, seeing as how Steve’s trying to convince him to help murder Milo.
I’m hoping for his plan to tie somehow into Abigail’s death in a grand plot to… I don’t know. I’d really rather that than it be its own thing. But Orpheus isn’t Stefano, so I don’t know how much of a brilliant gamemaster he is. At one time, it almost seemed like Evan and Jan’s baby had something to do with the plan, but then Evan got his son and announced he was leaving, only for Orpheus to just get a little sad and act *gasp* human. Unless he’s the one who sent Jan to the docks…

As for Shawn, I was dreading, but waiting for him to lash out at Belle. It was inevitable that he’d accuse her of getting exactly what she wanted after Evan took his son back. And I don’t think he’s wrong. There has to be at least a little part of Belle happy to have the living reminder of her and Shawn’s difficulties gone. But that doesn’t mean she’s not genuinely heartbroken at her husband’s pain.
Too bad Jan’s going to make sure this little saga isn’t over just yet. She’s not a fit mother, so now that she has Shawn Christian Maddox Frears Brady etc. and has vowed Salem will be seeing them again, Shawn and Belle may still get their chance to play parents someday — whether Belle wants to or not!
At least they might until Evan comes back. Unless that boy can’t even doggie paddle, he’s not dead.
• I loved Jada’s handling of Xander, especially with his Rex explanation. “Oh, he never really got over her, did he? And now he’s covering for her murder charge!”
More: Is Jada headed for an Eric romance, or something more?
• I was so happy to hear Alexander say that Adrienne was a mother to him too. And to find out he’s a devious Kiriakis through and through.
• That Thomas and Chad scene… Oof. That was heartbreakingly acted. It even makes up for the over-the-top drunk Chad scenes that started veering dangerously close to comedy.
• Paulina couldn’t listen to “Which twin should I choose” any longer so she considered plotting with Johnny to keep it going? What? Enough! Johnny, move on. Chanel, good for you, putting them on notice.
• Lucas changing his plea to “Guilty” is not a Friday cliffhanger.

Current status: Friends… with feelings. Their biggest obstacle: While Hope’s still married to Liam, her feelings for Thomas inexplicably keep growing. But if she ever does decide to leave her husband, Hope and Thomas’ respective families may be even bigger obstacles than marriage!

Current status: Married. Their biggest obstacle: Sheila’s locked away, but Steffy and Liam have been getting awfully chummy lately again. And with Hope eyeing up Thomas, instead of her husband, we have a feeling Finn may end up the odd man out here!

Current status: Done. Their biggest obstacle: The two have been doing their little dance for years as Bill tried wooing Katie back and she held him at arm’s length. On top of that, Katie’s heart now belongs elsewhere — but that’s not stopping Bill from trying to get her back! Again.

Current status: Over. At the moment. Their biggest obstacle: We thought Brooke was finally tired of Ridge’s game of love ping pong, but it looks like that particular obstacle is vanishing soon and they’re going to be heading right back to square one for a reunion in Italy!

Current status: Friends and co-parents. Their biggest obstacle: They’re both still married. But we have a feeling the Hope and Thomas drama may end up pulling them back together sooner, rather than later!

Current status: Over. Their biggest obstacle: Ridge will always abandon Taylor for Brooke. Always. And after this last time at their wedding, Taylor seems to have finally understood that as well. She and Brooke have declared themselves done with Ridge and are now friends. And perhaps…

Current status: Rekindled Romance. Their biggest obstacle: Let’s be honest, is Bill ever going to let Katie go? With that said, her deciding she was better off without him and Carter moving on from Quinn’s epic ghosting is something we wholeheartedly cheer on.

Current status: One big, happy family. Their biggest obstacle: Once upon a time it was Thomas, but now it’s Hope’s feelings for him! Add in Steffy happily getting involved and these two are in rough shape.

Current status: Thankfully over! Their biggest obstacle: It turns out not even Bill was narcissist enough for this sociopath. He was just working with the cops (and Ridge?) to lock her up forever!

Current status: Shacking up. Their biggest obstacle: How many times have they been here before? They’ve got passion aplenty but can she ever really morph into the next Forrester family matriarch?

Current status: Bygones. Their biggest obstacle: Surprisingly, it’s not the creep factor of her having already been with two of his sons, it’s the creep factor of him having macked on her during a fraught moment with then-husband Liam. Oh, and now he’s blackmailing her to save Sheila’s bacon. That’s… not good.

Current status: Magnetic exes. Their biggest obstacle: Bill’s, as usual, stuck on Katie and Brooke looks to be headed back to Ridge. For now, we’re guessing the magnetism might be a bit weak.

Current status: Nothing for now. Their biggest obstacle: Sheila may be out of the picture now for Deacon, but it looks like Ridge is about to re-enter it for Brooke. These two may never get their timing right — though that’s likely for the best!

Current status: Ancient history. Their biggest obstacle: The love/hate relationship between Wyatt’s parents tends to veer toward hate. Also, Quinn left town for reasons unknown. So that doesn’t help.

Current status: Acquaintances. Their biggest obstacle: At one point, the sparks between them were flying fast and furious… But then Deacon got wrapped up in Sheila and Taylor went back to her Ridge drama. But since Taylor’s moved on and Sheila’s kind of done the same, maybe these two could reconnect!

Current status: Permanently engaged. Their biggest obstacle: Their own cold feet. We’ve seen dozens of characters tie (and untie) the knot since these two crazy kids fell in love. It’s time to stop stalling and make it official!

Current status: Friends and exes. Their biggest obstacle: Zende seemed more than happy to be her “rebound guy” after Carter, but that over-eagerness is what landed him in trouble with Paris the first time around!

Current status: Separated. Their biggest obstacle: They got far more years together than anyone could have predicted, but they finally gave in to their passions for others: Eric for Donna and Quinn for Carter. Er, before she skipped town.

Current status: Former lovers. Their biggest obstacle: Sheila’s in jail! While even Deacon didn’t expect to develop actual feelings for her, we’re pretty sure these two are over. Mostly sure. Kind of sure.

Current status: Oddly over. Their biggest obstacle: After all that huge buildup and Quinn’s dramatic wedding-crashing confession, their love lasted about 2.5 seconds until she left town and dumped Carter off-screen. What the what?

Current status: Friends. Ish. Their biggest obstacle: They were teased a bit and then… nothing. Instead, Bill shacked up with the woman who tried to murder Li. Yeah, it was all a ruse to lock Sheila up, but that’s still a pretty big romance killer.

Current status: Engaged forever. Their biggest obstacle: They’re rivalling Pam and Charlie for longest engagement. Do they even have feelings for each other anymore? If they aren’t married by now, please let the answer be no.

Current status: Over and done. Their biggest obstacle: Carter ditched her at the altar the moment Quinn became available. It’s pretty hard to imagine this relationship ever bouncing back from that!

Current status: Left in the past. Their biggest obstacle: Wyatt can never seem to win out over his brother. Hope wanted Liam, and since they now share a kid, Wyatt’s chances seem all but nonexistent!

Current status: Doner than done. Their biggest obstacle: When he wanted her, she wanted Zende. When she wanted him, he wanted Quinn. Face it: They just weren’t all that into each other.

Current status: In the past… for now. Their biggest obstacle: If they ever reunite: Bill! No matter who he’s with, we seem him being ticked at this. Also, Katie’s heating up with Carter. In the meantime, Wyatt is still engaged to Flo, but their relationship can’t hold a candle to the passion he shared with Katie!

Current status: Newfound friends. Their biggest obstacle: Well, folks did not react well to the suggestion that their bonding over their new “Ridge For-Never” club could blossom into something more — but we stand by the possibility of a late-in-life discovery.
