Abe and Paulina Invite Some Surprise Guests to Their Juneteenth Wedding, Only for [Spoiler] to Bring the Day to a Screeching Halt
Tuesday, June 21, 2022: Today on Days of Our Lives, Paulina and Abe marry in their Juneteenth ceremony as Lani struggles with her secret.
As we get into Salem, Roman is commiserating over how sad Abigail’s death is when Paulina enters the Brady Pub and invites them to her and Abe’s wedding. Roman says he’d be honored to provide “all the fixins” to eat for the wedding. They then wonder who’s officiating and Paulina admits she doesn’t feel comfortable asking Marlena again. Then Eric walks in, which is just perfect. Paulina’s shocked by his defrocking, but Roman and Kate point out that priest or not, he’s still licensed, so he agrees to perform the ceremony.
In the Horton Town Square, Abe’s going over his last-minute checklist when he runs into Allie with some tea cakes and the news that she’s finished their last-minute Juneteenth wedding cake. Abe gratefully invites the young baker, insisting she’s family and that Chanel would love her there. He then runs into Nicole, and they talk of her own wedding postponement since Rafe’s too busy with Abigail’s death. Abe then invites Nicole to the wedding.
Over at the DiMera mansion, Johnny’s talking to his dad on the phone when Chanel wanders in. She comes bearing fresh donuts and condolences over Abigail, then talk turns to Paulina’s prison release and the wedding. When Chanel mentions her massive to-do list including needing to find a videographer, Johnny offers his services. Chanel balks, but he promises he just wants to help and she agrees to let him film the ceremony.
Across town, Olivia is visiting with Julie and Eli, insisting her hostess call her Big Mama since they’re family now. Olivia offers her prayers for Abigail, only for Julie to start ruminating over “that monster” TR. An uncomfortable Eli tries deflecting the conversation, but Big Mama mourns that she didn’t do something about Paulina and TR’s relationship before it ended in murder. Eli then manages to shift the conversation to Juneteenth, which Texas native Olivia is happy to explain to Julie.
Happy day or not, Lani struggles to hold it together in her home as a dead TR knocks on her door. She slams it in his face, trying to tell herself he’s not real. Lani freaks out when she hears another knock, but this time, it’s Theo and she throws herself into his arms. He asks what’s going on and she claims she thought he was her complaining downstairs neighbor.
Dead TR says Theo doesn’t believe her, even as Lani’s brother asks about Paulina’s murder charges. She runs off and leaves Theo to watch the twins. Eli comes how to greet his brother-in-law, who asks if Lani’s OK. Eli just shrugs it off as Lani being Lani and always shouldering “the weight of the world.”
Over at Paulina’s, Chanel and Lani help their mom prepare for the ceremony. She tells them how much it means that they’re both with her for her special day. For this wedding, she says, she needs a Matron and a Maid of Honor. Paulina then sends Chanel into the other room so she can check on how Lani’s doing. But when her daughter says how horrible she feels that Paulina’s taking the heat for her crime, the bride insists it’s her wedding day and she wants her daughter happy on it.
At the wedding venue, Eric, Johnny, Nicole and Allie all run into each other confused. They’d each thought it had only been a ceremony for family. Johnny and Allie do a little sniping, while Eric and Nicole feel each other out. Abe steps in before things get too awkward to say the ladies just arrived. Chanel’s a bit surprised to see Abe invited Allie, who doesn’t hold back on the flirting.
The ceremony starts with Lani staring down a bloody TR standing behind Abe. The bride and groom say their own vows, with Abe proclaiming that their love could never be denied. “I hope to share that love with our children and our grandchildren, as long as God blesses me to be by your side.” Paulina jokes that she can’t top that, but speaks from her heart. Abe was a problem, she says, she didn’t see coming. She hadn’t planned on unveiling her secrets about Lani, but then she fell in love with Abe and “all my secrets were laid bare.” And that’s what she wants with Abe for “all of the days of our lives.”
When Eric asks for objections, TR raises his hand, but Lani tries to ignore him. With no living objections, though, Eric concludes the ceremony and the bride and groom jump the broom. Paulina tosses the bouquet only for Chanel to catch it, leading Allie and Johnny to both make digs over her needing a groom… or a bride.
In the show’s last few minutes, TR taunts Lani over Paulina eating cake now, because all she’ll have is “stale bread in prison.” Lani tries shutting him up, then turns away to make a toast to her father and mother, Abe and Paulina. It starts out sweet, but then she says she can’t let her mom protect her anymore. Her parents deserve a life together. Eli and Paulina try to stop her, but Lani confesses through tears that she was the one who shot TR. As everyone looks on in horror, a smug TR nods.
