The Biggest Threat to Days of Our Lives’ ‘Xarah’ May *Not* Be the One You Think
Are they forever doomed to failure?
It’s hard, after a while, not to wonder whether Days of Our Lives‘ “Xarah” is cursed. The list of complications keeping them apart has been impressive, even by soap standards. From baby tragedy to kidnapping and a series of mental health crises, they just can’t catch a break. And then there’s Gwen.

Once upon a time, she truly did seem ready to step aside and let Xander and Sarah find happiness together. But that was when she thought she’d be spending years in prison. Now that she’s free and Sarah’s a “person of interest” in Abigail’s murder, that kind of noble self-sacrifice seems just a tad bit excessive. It may not be time to give up on Xander quite yet.
But if we’re being really honest, Gwen on her own may not be all that much of a threat to ‘Xarah.”

Yeah, a half-undressed Xander comforting his devious ex may not be ideal, but while he may still have some kind of empathy for Gwen, it’s clear that his heart lies with Sarah. His urge to protect his fiancée is powerful. Sarah’s hurting and scared right now, and Xander’s not going to turn his back on her. In fact, as Paul Telfer told Soaps.com, Xander’s protective nature towards Sarah trumps practically everything else — even good sense!
“He would definitely get himself into some real trouble to do something for her,” the actor explained, “whether she liked it or not.”
Xander proved that by going after Lucas as viciously as he did, but fortunately, he seems to have calmed down… For now. He’s far from giving up on clearing Sarah’s name because while Xander is capable of anything, he will never allow himself to think Sarah would ever be anything but perfect. As Telfer noted, “So much of his thing with Sarah is what she represents to him. She’s on this pedestal to him.”
Gwen, on the other hand, was always more on Xander’s level. That’s why they worked so well — at least at that point in their lives. But when she betrayed him and hurt Sarah, she lost even that much standing in his eyes. Ultimately, empathy and understanding for a fellow rogue who may be genuinely remorseful aside, he still doesn’t trust her. (And, we just found out, he may have a very, very good reason not to.) So, could Gwen ever really be competition? Not if Sarah keeps her cool and keeps her focus on the man she loves.
That, though, might be tough to do. There’s a lot that Sarah’s just glossed over from her time away. From Xander’s marriage to Chanel, to his romance with Gwen, she’s been taking it all in stride, smiling and nodding and brushing the surprises away as she focuses on her happily ever after. But that happiness keeps getting pushed further and further away.
It’s inevitable that sooner or later she’ll need an outlet for not just Xander’s inability to cut Gwen out of his life, but everything she’s been forced to process. It would only be natural for her to turn to someone she knows, someone she’s comfortable with, someone who understands what it’s like when the person you love is constantly drawn to someone else.
Someone like Rex. He made a brief appearance today, but it seems like he’ll be back in Salem in earnest soon. And after his run-in with Sarah the night Abigail died, it’s clear there’s still strong feelings between the two of them. Sarah may have made insisted she’s happy with Xander now, but her genuine affection for her former husband was still there. So if that happiness starts to slip…

Would Sarah pay much attention to Rex if Xander didn’t have Gwen sniffing around? Probably not. But if she’s got something she needs to say, there’s no doubt that he would be more than happy to lend an ear! And maybe offer a comforting, half-undressed hug or two to Sarah. Fair is fair, after all.
If just one half of “Xarah” is distracted, that’s not the end of the world. But if Xander and Sarah both take their eyes off of each other, sooner or later, one of them is going to walk off a cliff, and the other won’t be paying enough attention to stop them.
Take a look at our photo gallery of Xander and Sarah’s seemingly never-ending roller coaster romance!

The Xarah ship launched when the criminal and the good girl met upon his return to Salem in 2019. Xander, of course, hit on her immediately, but she was having none of it. However, one heartbreak over the brothers Brady (Rex and Eric) later and Sarah jumped into bed with him.

After ending it with both Rex and Eric, Sarah discovered she was pregnant with Eric’s baby. However, he had just reunited with the previously presumed dead Nicole. Not wanting to disrupt their reunion, Sarah enlisted Xander’s help to keep it a secret. He was all too happy to oblige.

When Sarah decided she wanted to have an abortion, Kristen blackmailed Xander into helping her and Rolf transfer the embryo to her womb. However, Rolf discovered Kristen was already pregnant and then Sarah changed her mind about wanting to keep her baby. So… it all worked out!

It wasn’t all gloom and doom for Xarah in the early days — this is Xander we’re talking about, after all. Which means moments of levity, including Xander dressing up as a caveman for Halloween, were sprinkled in amidst the tears and anguish.

After the near abortion, Xander posed as the baby’s father, but there was still tons of drama ahead. That included Xander helping Sarah give birth on the side of the road and then switching Sarah’s baby, who died, with Kristen’s very much alive baby. Then, baby Mickey was diagnosed with cancer and needed a bone marrow transplant, which led to all the truths coming out.

While pretending Xander was her baby’s father, the two crazy kids fell in love and even decided to get married. However, the truth about the baby switch came out. In a surprise to no one but Xander, Sarah left him just as they were about to say, “I do.”

Undeterred, Xander tried to get back into Sarah’s good graces. Though she tried to fight it, she couldn’t help but feel a pull towards her living-way-outside-the-lines beau. To try and keep him at bay, she enlisted Brady’s help to make Xander believe they were having an affair.

Xander wouldn’t let a little thing like a fake affair with his cousin get in their way, so he continued to try and win Sarah back. His efforts included saving her mother Maggie’s life when she tried to hang herself and buying a headstone to help Sarah say goodbye to the baby she lost. You know, the usual things.

Xander’s constant pursuit paid off, as Sarah agreed to accompany him to Ciara and Ben’s wedding. Though she insisted it didn’t mean they were back together, they did go on a proper date after the chaos of the church explosion subsided.

With the drama, secrets, and tears behind them, Sarah and Xander started to enjoy a fun, flirty relationship. Xander set out to prove himself to her, while Sarah wouldn’t let any of his detractors (who had a point, by the way) come between them.

Sarah and Xander set out to get the goods on Xander’s cousin Philip, who was vying for control of Titan and for Victor’s approval. To accomplish their task, they lurked around town, hot on his tail. They also pretended to break up, so Sarah could cozy up to Philip to gain intel. While they lashed out at each other in public, they latched onto each other behind closed doors.

The pair had the same idea to propose on the same day. While Xander got down on one knee with a ring, Sarah popped the question with a cake.

Unfortunately, their wedding only lived in their fantasies after escaped convict Kristen kidnapped Sarah. Donning a “Sarah” mask, Kristen broke up with a devastated Xander and shipped Sarah off to a private island.

After almost a year, Sarah finally resurfaced. The only problem — she thought she was Renee DuMonde and in love with Tony DiMera. That was all thanks to the mind altering drug she was injected with and only Renee’s diary to read while held in captivity.

Fearing she was lost to him forever, Xander moved ahead with his wedding to Gwen, who sabotaged Sarah’s recovery. However, the truth came out and Sarah received the antidote.

After a brief period where Sarah was forced to relive Xander’s baby swap, they reunited. They were blissfully happy once again — except for the fact that Sarah feared she killed Abigail while hallucinating.
