The Days of our Lives actor talks being a recast and single fatherhood.

Brandon Barash began playing the role of Days of our Lives’ Stefan DiMera on March 22, 2019. It was only supposed to last roughly a month, but as readers know it’s lasted much longer. Barash recently talked about playing Stefan, taking over the role from a friend and parenting with Soap Opera Digest.

Not only did he replace another actor, but one he had known for years. Of taking the place of Tyler Christopher who he worked with on General Hospital, Barash said, “He and I have been friends for a long time, since my GH days. Not once did I want him or anyone to think, ‘Hey, I’m trying to take your job.’” There was also the issue of winning over viewers who were used to Christopher in the role, but that’s not something Barash concerned himself with too much. “You just have to let that go. For me, it’s more about doing honest work. If you do honest work, everything else will work out.”

After he got hired, Barash recalled having two days to read six scripts and get working. After working in primetime the last few years, he had to get used to the fast pace of daytime again. “I didn’t want to hold up production. I didn’t want to go up [on] lines,” he recalled. Luckily that didn’t happen as after his first scene at Days of our Lives he recounted, “I was like, ‘Oh yeah. I remember this.’ It was pretty easy.”

Though he admitted he had never watched an episode of Days of our Lives, he still knew of the legendary Stefano DiMera (played by the late Joseph Mascolo) and felt the pressure of doing the role of Stefano’s son justice. That meant bringing a little more levity to the character for Barash. “To me, it’s always very important to add layers to a character,” he said. Declaring everyone has “a side of humanity to them,” he mused, “I wanted to add a little bit of lightness to him and little bit of humor every now and then because then it makes the big, heated, heavier moments that much heavier.”

As for Stefan and Gabi Hernandez (Camila Banus), Barash said, “They’re the couple who love to hate each other, but they also love to love each other.” When it comes to her portrayer, Barash enthused, “And, my God, Camila is just such a fun actress to work with. I knew, every day, that no matter what I hit her way, she was going to smack it back.”

When he’s not working, Barash is co-parenting his five-year-old daughter Harper with Kirsten Storms (Maxie Jones, General Hospital) and spending time with this girlfriend Morgan Mitchell who is a personal trainer. He also runs the Instagram page The Fathership with friend and fellow single dad Tyler Poelle. The collaboration allows them to share their stories of parenting girls while smashing the myth that dads don’t know what they’re doing. “Dads kind of get a bad rap being bumbling idiots when it comes to parenting, and we want to silence that and say, ‘You know what? We’re single fathers and we’ve actually got our shit together.’”
