A couple of Days stars took the time out of their weekend to lend their support to Operation Gratitude in Los Angeles on December 13. Deidre Hall (Marlena), Jay Kenneth Johnson (Philip) and Leanne Hunley (Anna) came out to celebrate the assembly and shipment of the organization’s 400,000th care package.

Operation Gratitude is a non profit volunteer organization that sends over 1,000 care packages of items and letters addressed to individuals in the U.S. Service who have been sent overseas. Their mission is to lift morale and express the American people’s support and appreciation.

Hall, Johnson and Hunley joined over one thousand volunteers, as well as Kathy Ireland, Ben Affleck, Los Angeles City Councilman Greig Smith, Sportscasters Ross Porter and Bonnie Jill Laflin, Mayoral candidate Walter Moore, two Junior ROTC units and dozens of Girl and Boy Scout Troops, as well as church, temple, youth, school and Rotary groups as they packed and prepared thousands of care packages until they reached the 400,000 mark.

According to the organization’s founder, Carolyn Blashek, this milestone marks 20 million individual items, more than 2.8 million pounds and $40 million worth of product that Operation Gratitude has sent to overseas troops since 2003.

Of course the day wasn’t complete without a visit from Santa as he brought a sack of special gifts donated by many corporate sponsors and supporters. The sack included tickets to major sporting events, an all inclusive vacation to a Caribbean resort and an autographed Golden Fiddle donated by country music legend Charlie Daniels. Santa’s package was given to the Van Nuys Regional Postmaster General who arranged for the gifts to be delivered at a secret presentation taking place on or around Christmas day.
