As The World Turns Celebrates 50th Anniversary
As the World Turns, created by Irna Phillips, premiered on CBS as a 30-minute live show on April 2, 1956. Today, April 2, 2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the daytime soap that has and still is receiving critical acclaim, with 30 Daytime Emmy Awards, most recently in 2005 for Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team.
As the World Turns was top-rated from 1959 to 1971 and was the first daytime serial with a spin-off show, Our Private World, which aired in prime time. The show has held true to Irna Phillips original vision of traditional family values, but stays current on issues of the day such as AIDS, drug or alcohol abuse, teen suicide and incest, among many other problems that confront today’s society.
Veteran cast members still on the program include HELEN WAGNER, (Nancy) since day one, EILEEN FULTON (Lisa), DON HASTINGS (Bob), KATHRYN HAYS (Kim) and MARIE MASTERS (Susan.)
The show has launched several well-known Hollywood names, including Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, James Earl Jones, Meg Ryan, Cicely Tyson, Jason Biggs, Lauryn Hill, Dana Delaney and Steven Weber.
