Martin was born the middle of three children and by age 3 knew he wanted to perform. By age 7 he played Michael in the West End production of "Peter Pan." The next year he played the title role in "Oliver," then starred with Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jean Simmons as Young Pip in Disney's "Great Expectations."

At 11, Martin studied at the Royal Ballet School in London, where he trained for seven years before graduating into Covent Garden's Royal Ballet Company. He performed at London's Royal Opera House, rising through the ranks to dance many leading roles, including Crown Prince Rudolf in "Mayerling," Colas in "La Fille Mal Gardee," and Mercutio in "Romeo and Juliet."

He left the company in 2008 to take on the lead role of Johnny Castle in the West End production of "Dirty Dancing." He moved to New York to marry Maria Kowroski, principal ballerina with New York City Ballet, and the couple performed lead roles together in Richard Eyre's new production of "Carmen" at the Metropolitan Opera House.
