The Young and the Restless: Catches Up with Camryn Grimes!

    Monday, May 04 2009

    Camryn Grimes (CBS)
    Update May 4:

Camryn will be appearing on the May 6 episode of The Young and the Restless as Cassie appears to Sharon in a dream. Here's what Camryn told about her return:

"Going back and seeing everyone I grew up with like Josh and Sharon again was an awesome experience. I just hope the fans won't mind if Cassie grew up a little while in heaven!"

Original Article April 22: recently had an opportunity to chat with upbeat actress Camryn Grimes (ex-Cassie Newman, The Young and the Restless), who is currently loving her time in New York City where she is appearing as Rosalind in "As You Like It" at the West End Theatre (86th & Broadway) through May 10!

Camryn also just completed studies at Strasberg while in NYC, and is planning a road trip home to L.A. with her best friend after the show ends. Comparing the two cities, Camryn told me, "They're both these crazy cities with everything happening - yet they're so different!" Although she's been busy with the production and school, Camryn has been auditioning and has her fingers crossed that something will come up - she loves to work and be busy and describes herself as "really ambitious!"

Camryn, who was great on "The Ghost Whisperer" earlier this year, told me it was a fun experience. A funny moment on the set was when the makeup people had to figure out how to make the naturally very pale Camryn actually look dead! She told me, "Usually they do this white, pale airbrush on people to make them paler and look dead, but they had to use blue on me because the white was like my foundation!"

Camryn practically grew up at Y&R, spending eight years as Cassie Newman before the character passed away. Camryn misses the show, however, the ever-positive actress noted that leaving gave her the chance to go to high school - where she found theater! Y&R was like home, and Camryn misses everyone, particularly Sharon (Case, Sharon), and Josh (Morrow, Nick), who she would love to work with again given the opportunity. What sort of storyline would she like to do? Camryn says, "I always wanted a love interest. If I'd stayed on the show, I had hoped that was where it would go eventually!"

Camryn was shocked to hear that Cassie was going to die - she didn't expect it. Her attitude, however, was that, "If it's meant to happen, it's meant to happen. Everything happens for a reason, I think!" She said although it really didn't "hit" her for a couple of weeks, taping Cassie's final scene was "ridiculously hard," saying, "If you watch my death scene, where Sharon is crying over me - I'm supposed to be dead - but I'm crying!"

Camryn with cast (Frog & Peachtree Theatre Co)
Being younger, Camryn hasn't kept in touch with anyone from Y&R, but still catches the odd episode. Recently, while watching with her grandmother, she asked her, "Who's that kid?" Her grandmother replied, "That's Noah." Camryn was astonished that Noah looked to be her age, asking, "How did that happen in, like, five years?!" I assured her it was a case of Rapid Aging Syndrome!

These days, Camryn, whose hobbies are biking, boxing at the gym (in a class full of boys), and cartooning (she one day hopes to complete a comic or graphic novel), is busy playing Rosalind in Shakespeare's "As You Like It." Rosalind is a natural fit, since hers was the monologue Camryn always took to drama competitions and Shakespeare festivals! Camryn says, "Rosalind is honest and smart, and really comments on a lot of silly and weird behaviors that men and women have when they're courting each other."

Asked about the differences between acting live onstage and filming, Camryn commented that onstage, "You're connecting with an audience - it's really a thrill because it's live and in the moment." She also told me that, "It's bigger and more expressive than film or TV...the differences are huge!" She admits to feeling nervous before a live performance, saying, "It's tough until you say that first line, but once you're out there and you're on, it's fine. It's just this rush that I love!"

Camryn says "As You Like It" is a really cool production, and she's having the time of her life! The story is set in a kingdom, with two Dukes (brothers) - one bad and one good - and their daughters, one of which is Rosalind. Also involved are Orlando and his evil brother, Oliver. They all end up in the Forest of Arden, where Rosalind decides to disguise herself as a boy! Camryn concludes, "So they're all in the forest together and comedy ensues! You walk out feeling good!" is thrilled for Camryn and wishes her all the best in her future endeavors! Buy tickets to see Camryn in "As You Like It" here! As always, be sure to leave your thoughts below!

I wish the writers would be able to bring back Cassie. They do it all the time in soaps. Sometimes they come back 4 or 5 times. Cassie has been in a coma all this time and TGVN has been paying for her intensive care and a team of doctors and she wakes up and the first word she says is "MOM".

That would be a great twist. I always liked the connection Cassie had with Nick and Sharon onscreen and in off screen interviews. The character could come back and be a part of the teen crown, not tween crown. We can only keep our hopes up. Good luck with your future endeavors Camryn.

Camryn did such a fantastic job with Cassie. It was a joy and pleasure seeing her grow up on y&r. We miss Cassie (Camryn) like crazy! She is a beautiful and talented actress and I wish nothing but the best for her!

Sounds like Camryn is a busy young lady! I loved her as Cassie. She was such a sweet girl. I wouldn't want her to come back, except when she's in a dream. It was such a shock when she got into that accident and died. I would love to see her in movies or T.V. She played the daughter of a guy on Swordfish, with John Travolta. She was so pretty.
