    Nick, just sit down. (CBS)
Genoa City for the week of June 2 - 6:

"Y&R" has always been far and away the best soap opera in my eyes, so it has been distressing and rather alarming to come to the realization that of the four remaining soaps, "Y&R" is arguably now offering the most banal viewing experience. Love for the show and many of the amazingly talented cast members and their characters is enough to keep loyal viewers tuning in, but a growing number of voices are calling for change in hopes that "Y&R" can be restored to it's former greatness. Thoughts, starting on a positive note:

    Solid acquisition.
While Jill and Colin's story has tended to get a little bogged down in the details of music boxes and necklaces at times, their chemistry, Jill's very human conflicted feelings about Colin, and his seeming struggle to be a better man, make it very much worth watching. The related story of Cane's innate desire to believe that his father has changed, and the conflict that creates with Lily, is character-driven drama that has definite potential. As unfeasible as it was, the bit with Mattie wanting Grandpa Colin and stealing the necklace was fun.

    Served cold.
After sitting through weeks, maybe months, of Avery's blasted cooking scenes, it's all come to her freaking out over a few cryptic messages posted online when formerly she was so tough-as-nails that she absolutely refused to have Nick or Dylan accompany her out of town on a very dangerous case, in fact she was offended by the very suggestion. Avery showed a bit of spirit in her meeting with Victor, but blindly trusted this Austin kid who, by the by, was inexplicably left to tape the cooking episodes alone with her in her apartment. It makes about as much sense as Summer offering up her virginity to this guy five minutes after meeting him - what are we supposed to feel about that besides she's an idiot? Now Austin has taken Avery to his place, and back at Avery's apartment, Super Dylan was mentally suiting up. It's anyone's guess how or if Ian fits into the Austin stalker plot against Avery, for as discussed last week, we remain unenlightened about Ian Ward’s motivations.

    Just scared.
So now it's Sharon/Nick/Mariah/Tyler/Abby we're contending with in this storyline. First let's talk about Nick and Sharon. They have history and a nice balance of passion and romance as a couple, but do we want to sit through endless mundane scenes of them arguing about hypnosis or Sharon going to Portland or Mariah before they have sex? Unequivocally no. Second, let's talk about Tyler and Abby. They're so boring no one cares if they get back together or stay apart. Nick weighing in was laughable as Abby didn't take his advice anyway, just as Sharon doesn't care what he thinks about Mariah. Nick, just sit down. Tyler checking in with Lily led to a positively cringe-y attempt on the part of the writers to explain away their obvious swerve from Mariah resembling Lily to being a Cassie doppelganger. As for Mariah herself, the storyline seems headed toward her becoming a replacement Cassie. Sharon clearly feels maternal toward her and Nick will likely hire her at The Underground and come to care for her despite himself. While some may love this idea, others are firmly in the camp that Cassie was a great character who should have been left to rest in peace a long time ago.

    Warp speed. (CBS)
    Ready to commit.
The Hilary/Neil debacle is moving forward at warp speed. You would think even someone as impulsive as Neil would want to take it slow after being so spectacularly shafted by Leslie so recently. Hilary nursing Devon in the hospital came off as maternal, rather than girlfriend-y, which was off-putting to say the least. It's anyone's guess what we should be hoping for in this storyline. Many are rooting for Devon and Hilary, but how do you get there exactly and still enjoy it, considering the circumstances? Neil may be acting like a dumbass, but he doesn't deserve to be hurt by his own son.

Takes a con to catch a con.
Many were asking this week why Billy didn't simply hire a private investigator to dig into Stitch's past. It's a good question, with the answer probably being because then he wouldn't have an excuse to take a trip to Australia with Chelsea. It also was amusing to note that while Chelsea was basking in Billy's admiration of her top of the line snooping skills, she remained blissfully unaware that she and Connor were being followed and photographed. How do you feel about the latest development? Vote in's Y&R Poll: Chelsea and Billy's Trip to Australia.

    Horse in the race.
Stitch continues to be a charismatic and conflicted character (with a really nice butt!), but those who are rooting for him and Victoria are coping with an increasing sense of dread about what will be revealed regarding his past and how devastating it will be to his future.

    Unbreakable bond.
'Snooty' Nikki made a couple of appearances this week. First she chased off reporters that were bothering Victor and then she dissed Jack's new date, Kelly - such fun! Nikki needs to just stop with the little dance where Victor's concerned, however, and go back to the ranch.

It seems most are over Kevin clinging on to the whole Chloe thing and are ready for him to get a new storyline pronto.

Jill, get a lawyer -- the law in WI as far as inheritance is that it belongs 100% to the inheritor whether she or he is married or not. That necklace is 100% yours and if you don't get it insured (and lock it up) you are as dumb as everyone else on this show.

I can't get into the Jill/Colin romance because unlike Jill who wants to believe that he's changed, we know he hasn't. He's after her money, he kidnapped her and forced her to marry him, he arranged for the whole diamond heist from which he emerged as a hero, but we all know he is the reason Cane was shot. Even Cane knows he hasn't changed -- yet he's protecting him. Hmmmm...

Love that Neil was upset about "Grandpa Colin" babysitting Maddie, but come on, they really needed a babysitter for her in order to take her brother to the hospital with poison ivy? Really?

Summer -- make love to me Austin. Honey, there has to be actual love (or at least respect and admiration) to do that. Otherwise it's called something else. How desperate can you be? And what happened to Kyle?

And yes, Cassidy Ann Newman -- R.I.P. I love the actress but the story line is getting ridiculous. My guess is that she will find out Sharon's secret and then feel torn about telling Nick because she has grown to love Sharon.

As far as Chelsea goes, not only does she not notice someone following her, but someone has managed to break in and install a nanny cam! I see Chelsea and Billy developing a relationship and this really bothering Victoria when it comes to Johnny. When Johnny is with them, he is with both his bio parents!

Victoria will find out the ugly truth about Stitch but then Victor will pull a Sharon and make Stitch the daddy of Victoria's baby (since that is apparently better than Billy). It will take years for anyone to find out the truth. Ugh.

I have watched this show since day one and have never been bored of the story lines until NOW!!!! WTH??? There are already too many stories going now that you need to bring to light and then you add another storyline with boring Avery! You have messed this wonderful soap opera up for all of us. Just like other viewers, you have lost my interest. It's sad when I would rather watch the news than watch this show. I'm ready to stop watching and turn my views over to General Hospital. Its a damn shame what you have done to Young and Restless.

It is truly amazing how they screw up good characters.

We need something really new to bring life into this boring show.

I had a thought today that I think Tamara Braun would be an excellent replacement for Phyllis.

What is missing: Phyllis, Adam, old billy. Well, we can't have them back so bring in good characters that can walk a mile in their shoes. Let's face it, they are what is missing. Ashley back would also be good.

    Let's shake things up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Billy Abbott, former owner of a gossip mag, doesn't know how to investigate someone to get the dirt on them and I'm supposed to buy into this dribble? Really?

I'm torn about the Billy and Chelsea trip. I'm not a big fan of the pairing but it's really been irritating me that Victoria keeps reminding Billy their separated and spends all this time with Stitch, yet she's jealous of Billy spending anytime with Chelsea. Can't have both ways Vick, you either want Billy or you don't.

Could not agree more about Summer acting like an idiot throwing herself at Austin like a minute after they met. And what 18/19 year old says "make love to me" ? The whole scene failed on so many levels.

This show is so bad I don't even know where to start. It is unrecognizable and it is boring. Sharon and Nick. BLAH. Abby and Tyler. Blah. Nikki and Victor. BLAH been there and done that so many times. WHO CARES. Cane and that whiny twit Lily. BLAH.. This show is failing. They need to get rid of Phelps yesterday.

Candace, Your first paragraph is spot on.
I fast forward through 90% of the dialogue.
I cringe at every couple-except Michael & Lauren.
Happy to see a new Billy coming.
Maybe "Phyliss" will give the show some fire.
Victor needs a better nemesis than Jack and Ian.
Victoria is acting immature as usual.
Neil has never had a back bone.
    Bring back new Adam soon.

There is always switching to Maury to find out who the father is when Sharon and Nick repeat the same conversations over & over again.

The show ratings wenr down when everyone protested about Adam and Billy leaving the show. It will continue sliding unless Ms Pelps gets her act together. Sharon story neds to come out. Reveal Stich's secret. What iscIan's purpose in staying in GC. Hire new smart writers and get rid of the brainless, uncreative writers presently on staff

Posted by PUNKERDOODLE at Friday, June 06 2014 09:30 PM

How long do we have to wait for the writers to end this "Jack is Summer's Father" hoaky story line? Have Sharon remember what she did and get it over with already. Your dragging it out too long!!!!!!!!!!!

    In response to dramaqueen333:

Nobody broke into Chelsea's to install a cam. Chelsea's mom let him in when she was babysitting Conner. He said he was the maintenance man. She called Chelsea to see if it was okay and Chelsea confirmed that the maintenance man was scheduled. They both got duped.

About Y&R in general. Been watching since day one and I can honestly say this is the first time this soap has bored me to tears and left me caring about none of them.

Having said that, not one actor can make or break a show. It is not failing because Michael Muhney left, or Billy Miller, or sadly, not even Jeanne Cooper. IT'S FAILING BECAUSE OF POOR WRITING! If you don't care about the characters or the storylines, it's not going to matter who they hire to play the part.

So let's stop giving the writers a pass because one of our favorite actors is gone.

Writers: Write some something we care about. Give the actors a storyline they can sink their teeth into. If you don't, we'll soon be saying goodbye to the once best soaps on TV!
