    Postcards... (CBS)
Restless Rant Week of August 12-16:

It's heart-breaking to see viewers become so disillusioned with "Y&R." It has definitely gone downhill. I tried to introduce a new viewer to the show this week and let's just say it didn't go well - understandably so. Why are we watching characters spend half of their scenes discussing bookshelves or air conditioning, or folding napkins? Why is it necessary for the characters to tell us that another Newman/Abbott feud is beginning - stating the obvious makes for cringe-worthy dialogue. "Y&R" has been tedious to sit through - it's lost heart. Thoughts:

    Big baby.
Well, the week kicked off with Dylan delivering a large, perfectly clean, silent baby into a snow white towel in their dingy warehouse apartment. Ye gad. Chelsea then babbled about them both being big babies, which explained away the issue of the newborn not looking like your typical preemie. Sigh. If this dude still hasn't copped on to the baby being Adam's, he almost deserves what's coming. My guess is that he knows, or suspects, and has decided to ignore it, meaning he isn't being completely honest either. In any case, whenever Chelsea starts up her headache-inducing yammering about Dylan or Adam 'finding out the truth', I wish for someone to swing a suitcase up the side of her head. Also, how hypocritical is Chelsea for disowning Anita for being a con, when she's doing what she's doing? Gah!

    Wants everything.
When Melanie ran into Adam at Crimson Lights she asked if they could have a civil conversation and then proceeded to tell him she wouldn't stop until he was ruined. Huh?

    Tea party.
Victoria arguing with Chloe about Billy seems pointless, since Victoria now knows Billy was gambling, not cheating. As for Kevin's tea party with Delia, it was cute that he let her dress him up, but it would have been way more fun for smirking Alex to have noticed him wearing earrings in the police station rather than Paul.

    Never be free.
So, Fen trotted off to rehab and Lauren then got a text message from Carmine that she'd never be free of him. I'm not really feeling it, since they never adequately explained Carmine's obsession or let viewers in on how he came to be that way. They could have used Carmine's character differently given that he had chemistry with numerous Genoa City ladies.

    Jabot jobs.
Devon just needs to go work for Tucker in the music industry - he'd be so much happier than dealing with the drama at Jabot. Tyler will obviously return and bring Noah with him. Clearly Tyler is confident that they will let him do the hiring. Is Neil even working there anymore? It seems that brooding about the blogger has become his full-time job. Even knowing the blogger is most likely Hilary, who is most likely Rose's daughter, isn't making this storyline more intriguing. It's just making us dread how long it will take Neil to figure it out. Meanwhile, Hilary's gone from dynamic to creepy, and it feels like just another stalker-ish story. Next.

Abby isn't like Abby anymore. She's now this typical blonde who over-analyzes everything that goes on with Tyler, and acts almost unsure of herself at times - so not Abby!

    This is a feud. (CBS)
    What a trip.
Sharon faking a twisted ankle was too dumbed down. Worse, when Sharon called Nick back over to the house the next time, she must have forgot all about it because she was walking around fine. In fact, she and Faith, who supposedly had a terrible tummy ache, were both able to play Twister! Also still confusing is Cassie, who has gone from acting like Sharon's conscience to cheering her on as she schemes.

    Character witness.
It looks like Adam will have to rely on Jack to be a character witness. Here's hoping the trial happens before Jack falls off the wagon. If Victor's trying to screw Adam, he will probably get Jack back on pills as a way to discredit him.

    Feud fuel.
I don't get Victor fighting with Jack over Summer at all. What's the point? Of course it's great when Victor and Jack go at each other, but it should at least be a legit beef. Why on earth would Victor tell Jack he has no right to be a father to Summer, when as far as they know, Jack's her biological parent? Made Victor sound senile! So glad Nick told us that a new feud was starting too - we might not have known otherwise.

    Kyle goes on a date.
Does anyone really care? He doesn't feel like an Abbott, nor does he have chemistry with Summer.

    Creamy nude.
Want to bet someone will discover this is Sharon's signature Jabot lip color?

    Postcards from beyond.
I liked the concept of the postcards and the idea that Katherine and Murphy fulfilled her bucket list. Fingers and toes crossed that the rest of this goodbye storyline is worthy of The Duchess.

    What's the verdict?
Billy taking Victoria on a trip down memory lane was sweet. Made one wonder why he didn't try this approach initially. What do you think about them reconciling? Vote:

Right on review. They have made half the characters UNLIKABLE... and then the ones that try to redeem themselves - they still trash. Billy is trying - so this thing between Billy and Vicki is silly. He's trying hard not to lie, not to fall back into his own habits. At least he's trying... this is a soap - no one is going to be perfect - in life no one human is perfect... so they need to have a few happy couples on the show without the same troubles as the other 12 couples on the show. That's my problem - they all have the same problems - Billy, Fen and Kevin all have addictions. They seem to have skimmed over Nikki's MS story... Sharon and Jack both talk to 'ghosts' - and since when does someone who went to heaven (assuming Cassie) give advice that implies scheming - so in contract - John gives Jack true advice - we can believe John's spirit speaks to Jack - but what is up with Sharon and Cassie... so if it's cuz Victor or someone is drugging her - then she needs to be drugged ALL THE TIME... and since when is there a drug that caused MANIPULATION - Sharon is manipulative - that's a human behavior - not something you get from being drugged... the stories have become unbelievable and so many of the characters have become unlikable - and not on women in town trusts the man she is with - no a one... unbelievable... they need to rename GC - Paranoid City... seriously - it's not entertainment - it's overdo!

Good Rant Candace and right on.
CherylD- agree which is why I think Cassie is Sharon's own illusion and not a ghost like John.
Y&R has some major fixing up to do.

Agree Candace about Chelsea being a hypocrite, she is Anita. Yes I see her wanting to be better but she needs to look in the mirror, her mother is right. This will blow up in her face.
I hate that Billy is working so hard to get the spoiled brat Victoria back. He could do so much better and not have to work so hard to have someone's love. yes he has messed up but hello, Vitoria there is no halo on your head despite what you think.
They need a real fix up or they will be the next show off the air.
Don't you wonder how the actors can stand there an act this crap out. Even they must be like "OMG", no wonder Phyllis (Michelle) left. They are running for the hills.

Good rant Candace - couldn't agree more. The only part of the show I'm looking forward to is the farewell to Katherine. Hopefully they'll do it justice. The rest of the show is tedious as you pointed out. I know there are numerous storylines going on at the same time but everything seems to drag on forever. Could they not wrap up some stuff and move on before they lose more viewers?

Billy and Victoria. I love it!

This show has its favorites; those that drive story and those that support. Lately it is becoming bad reality tv, where the worse behavior is hailed as the 'norm'. Not sure what demographic TPTB are shooting for but they continue to lose in the 18 to 49 sooooooo......

Viewers are tired of EVERY character being portrayed as dumb! Write a story where the characters respond "true to their character". Enough shock & awe.

And we keep watching and supporting this mess! Why should TPTB change direction?????

Not even watching this show right now, although I intend to watch the Katherine parts next week. Agree with everything you said -- yuck.

Great rant Candace! So glad that I'm not the only one who thinks this show has come into a holy mess.I was scratching my head too at TEVN telling Jack not having the right to be a father to his daughter...just made no sense. The Chelsea birthing scene was so bad it was funny.Carmine texting Lauren is so stupid, why is this supposedly smart business woman just change her number or better yet,get a new phone. The blogging story has gone on too long and I still don't care. The rape storyline is disgusting and the actress who plays Melanie has found her calling of playing annoying characters. She was the sad sack Irish (?) lass who was smothered with a pillow I think by the crazed mob guy.I will be sad to see the beloved Mrs C and hope that JC gets a tribute worthy of her.Otherwise, this show is just a mess!

I haven't done a lot of posting on this site but I have to agree with what a lot of people are feeling about Y & R lately. I am 52 years old and have been watching this show since I was 14....I am truly a long time fan. However, in all the years I've followed this soap, I cannot remember a time when I was so bored/disgusted with current story lines. There are so many new characters coming on week after week that as a viewer we find it hard to care or become engaged in their overbearing presence. Less time is spent with the veterans that have truly shaped the soap and then we deal with the loss of characters we do like and become attached to. I'm certainly not a writer not do I pretend that I could do a better job than those that are currently assigned that position with Y & R. As a viewer, however, all I can say is that my FF button on the remote has never been used as much as it is currently being used. I hope that we can soon begin to care about the story lines again and get excited about the direction it's taking.

The hideous manner in which you approached the revealing of Katherine's death today was despicable. You and the network should be grossly ashamed of yourselves for this inept, deplorable, inappropriate manner in which this is coming about! How DARE you! How DARE you! How DARE you approach this travesty with a 'bucket list' approach! What a disrespectful manner in which to address the demise of Mrs. elegant, respectable, enterprising, elite, highly regarded, woman of the world, of society, of expertise, highly regarded, tasteful...words fail to grace her magnetism, her elegance, her societal position...and you begin it with a ''bucket list '' could you, how could you take such a menial, low, despicable attitude to begin this. You obviously have no indication of the position this woman held, not only in the soap, but in the lives of her fans, her viewers...this inappropriate attitude is totally disrespectful and idiotic! You are unrelenting in your sublevel position of inappropriate writers for this soap. You are undeserving to call yourselves' Y&R Writers!! You are an embarrassment! Sub par in this field beyond imagination! You are a disgrace!!

I knew you were incapable of handling it appropriately, but I could not surmise the depth of the level you could sink in actually making an are deplorable! I ache, my pain for our loss of her is magnified by this inefficient, deplorable vastness of the depth to which you have fallen! You should be driven from the halls which hold this soap and stripped of any indication you were ever associated with it! A public decapitation would not be merciful enough to cleanse a thought you were ever connected with it! I am just devastated!!!!!
