    Blind trust. (CBS)
    Restless Rant
    Week of June 10 - 14:

The big storyline this week was the reveal that Nick's not really Summer's father. Some loved it, others hated it. Either way, it definitely evoked strong emotion...and highlighted the lack of emotion viewers have for the storylines featuring non-core characters who simply don't inspire that depth of caring. Thoughts:

    Struggling.
Sharon's continued struggle seemed rather poignant this week. It's unfortunate that it's coming partially due to the rewrite with regard to Adam's feelings for her, but it is what it is. Sharon's exchange with Noah in his apartment was very well done; heartfelt. Her loneliness and longing to attach herself to someone is probably something many people can relate to...though this bit with traveling salesman, Wayne, can't be good. It was also interesting that she crossed paths with Carmine, who seems to have chemistry with every lady he meets.

    Blind trust.
Speaking of downward spirals, it looks like Fen's bullying and bad luck has landed him in with a new crowd where he'll feel accepted at long last. Yike. Michael's not gonna' like this. On a positive note, the scenes with Lauren and Michael doing their homework were so touching..loved it!

Ding dong the marriage is dead.
Chloe finally uttered all those words we've been longing to hear this week, dumping Kevin, moving out, and removing her ring. Having Glo involved was the icing on the cake. Let's just hope and pray this is the end, rather than the beginning of a story about Kevin winning her back, which would be unthinkable. Chloe, once again, shared amazing chemistry with Alex this week, and will wonders never cease...managed to nab a scene with her ex, Billy. Easy as peasy we were reminded of their chemistry, and how they 'get' each other. Intriguing stuff, especially since Victoria saw their embrace and will now think they're having an affair.

    Paternity puzzle. (CBS)
    The firm.
I'm all for Leslie and Avery opening their own practice, but it's not a good sign that Leslie's their only client. Hopefully that changes quickly. Anyway, both of them have too much going on in their personal lives to take on too much in the way of work. Leslie is contending with secrets from her own past, and Neil's (still haven't figured that out), and Avery will soon be contending with an outed secret as well, when she learns what Nick has done. Do you think she'll dump him when she finds out? Let Soaps.com know by voting in our Y&R Avery's Reaction poll.

Some habits are hard to break.
Is it just me or did Chelsea and Dylan go from being strangers to being 'in love' in warp speed? It makes it all feel very superficial - no depth - all sugary sweet with no substance, much like Chelsea was with Adam in the beginning, which is why many viewers didn't, and still don't, buy that 'great love'. It's not that we can't enjoy the little fairytale unfolding; it has its moments, but the idea of Anita taking a wrecking ball to it has great appeal at times as well. Love that she's such a loose cannon!

    Enterprising Newmans.
Now that Adam and Victor are circling each other and the issue of trust, things have become much more interesting. Dying to know who Adam is talking to on the phone! As for their personal lives, Adam and Avery's odd budding friendship is very appealing. Victor's gesture to Nikki - a honeymoon in Tuscany - was wonderful, and immediately made me wonder when they'll find out the blockbuster about Summer.

    Paternity puzzle.
Well, the DNA's out of the bag. Most normal human beings would follow up with a test on Jack and Summer, or a blood test, to confirm the results (as one Soaps.com reader pointed out, what if the hair Nick took from the brush wasn't Summer's?), but there's not much doubt that Phyllis and Nick will go running over to Jack's house and blurt everything out. Not that they have time to be particular, what with Summer salivating at the idea of bedding her brother. Eck. Backtracking, the scene in which Nick told Phyllis about the DNA test and she reacted, contained a lot of dialogue that did not ring true to me, but then there's been a lot not ringing true about some of the core characters lately. Anyway, the fallout over this reveal will no doubt be worth suspending reality. The one branch of this storyline that could have been very powerful is the angle with Summer and Kyle. Unfortunately, the decision to drop NuKyle in when they did (and him falling flat with viewers) is going to take away greatly from the impact that their devastation could have had. Bummer.

I hope Sharon can deal with her life without turning to a man. Seems like she is wanting to turn to Nick or Adam or the bar guy – who ever will take her. Ugh.

Michael and Lauren’s struggle seems very realistic. I hope they pull through.

Dylan is a fantasy for Chelsea and her baby is a fantasy for him. I don’t know how she can say she doesn’t want to marry him because THAT seems like too much. Huh? You told the guy you’re having his BABY but marriage seems too much? A marriage can be dissolved. The only thing I like about this story is looking forward to the truth coming out and Chelsea realizing how completely she messed up. And by the way, Chelsea, I believe you and Dylan spent the night together all of three months ago and now you’re feeling the baby move? No.

Absolutely correct about the DNA. First of all, just so you know, writers, if Nick were not the father, the test would say 100% not, not 99.9%. If you’re not the father, you’re NOT the father. And yes, anyone could have used Summer’s hairbrush. Nick could have done a cheek swab with her at any time in the last 18 years, even when she was asleep. But as he said, he didn’t want to know, and if not for his daughter wanting to bed Kyle, this issue might never have come up.

I am not buying Summer and Kyle so I don’t think there should be any angst. Kyle only looked at her as more than a teen about a week ago. And she only started looking at him about a month ago. This is hardly a Romeo and Juliet thing. Kyle is too old and worldly for her. And Jack’s sudden adoration of Summer seems forced, too. He never acted so fatherly around her before. Too obvious. It will be interesting to see what happens to their relationship once they both know. Will Jack try to force it or overdue it? Will Summer reject Nick and go to Jack?

In any case, I expect this news to send everyone reeling.

I thought Michele and Joshua’s scene was good. Phyllis was confused and righteously angry. Loved when she made the comparison of Nick and Adam. Ouch! Adam took Nick’s baby because it served his purposes, and Nick took Jack’s baby for the same reason. And Phyllis’ reaction to Nick saying Jack never did anything for Summer (like take care of her when she was sick, etc.) was perfect – because YOU didn’t give him the opportunity! Selfish, selfish Newmans. I am a little surprised Sharon is not more upset about this turn of events, considering how Nick’s big lie has affected her life.

Looking forward to watching all the fallout.

You nailed it with the whole "rewrite" of Adam's feelings for Sharon. What the heck is going on here? Now she will sleep with Wayne and Adam will sleep with Melanie?

I don't understand why the writers are out to ruin Adam and Sharon, especially when one of the first things they did was put Adam back helping Sharon and declaring his love for her. We all knew it was still there. And I agree, his "romance" with Chelsea never felt very real -- felt too quick and too forced.

My worry is that most of us won't care anymore when the writers finally get to where they are going -- IF they even know where they are going. I have to admit, the stories and the characters have been VERY incoherent lately. I didn't think this right after the new writers started, but things have gotten worse as far as dropped storylines, things going in so many different directions, main characters acting like strangers, etc.

I'm still waiting for Fen to come home stoned and drunk after driving his new car...
Glad the paternity came out...Phyllis had just fixed Summers hair for the prom with that brush... and Faith's hair is short and curly... so I am buying that this is Summer's hair.
Wish they would get on with this Lauren/Carmine dilemma.
Hope a Shick reunion is in the works...

Candace I'm surprised you think alot of the dialogue did not ring true in the confrontation between Nick and Phyllis. I thought it was really well done, especially with Phyllis calling Nick out on being just like Adam and Nick's instant denial he was nothing like him.

Great post Candace, I agree this "re-write" of Adam's feelings smacks of character propping and don't get me started on my poor Sharon...

Do the new writers know that everyone calls them the new writers?
No story line will ever make Neil interesting.
    Chloe and Kevin--do not
    resuscitate
We like Billy too much to have him be so stupid.
Go on your honeymoon already M/M/ Newman.
Want to see Phyllis go really ballistic over DNA--last chance to see her great acting.
    Nice to see Gloria.
I remember when Y&R was so glamorous.......

I loved the the scenes between Nick & Phyllis when he finally revealed the truth to her. It was a stark reminder of what JFP has let go of with MS exit from the show.
SC has had some wonderful scenes lately between her & Nick. I am a die hard SHICK fan & so have my fingers crossed that they will be reunited by years end. (I never lose hope.)

Loved seeing Billy and Chloe share a scene. I have always found Billy and Victoria to be a boring match but all they talk about is babies. And Victoria whines. Mix and repeat. It's stagnant. Billy used to be a compelling character just like Chloe used to be fierce. Time to let both characters fly free. Hope to see both characters continue their interactions, and if it leads to some Chilly in 2013 I am more than ready.

The Winters' and associates' storyline is a waste of air time. Thinking it will fall flat with no great reveal. Unless Rose ends up being Drew (and that is so farfetched), it needs to be ditched. Sharon is being destroyed. Is Melanie a plant in Adam's life by Victor? Who does Adam talk on the phone with? Sorry, but the Baldwins' and their messes don't interest me. I don't think Adam loves Chelsea but he will want his Newman heir. Chelsea has worked up a case for Adam getting a lot of father time. Never knew actor Dylan from another soap but the writers must not be doing him any favors on this one. There are too many new characters that we are to get invested in but the storylines are uninteresting or vague. Abby is a new ac

Fininhing from above. Abby is a new actress and recast in every sense of the word. When I see her I do not even see her in Abby's place. It is like a whole new character. So hope Jack has another DNA test done. I can see Summer resenting Nick and Jack over this. Nick was wrong in not being sure all these years and if Jack is her father, this ends her Kyle conquest. Can't deny that she is Phyllis's daughter with the lies and manipulations.somehow I see Nick coming out of this better than being the town liar. Of course, he could be ruined like Adam and Sharon.
