The Young and the Restless: Best and Worst of 2008!

    Thursday, January 01 2009

    Amber and Katherine! (CBS)
Well, we've all grown accustomed to having a good 'Rant' in the newsroom each week about the Y&R and it's storylines, characters, and writers. This week, in honor of the end of 2008, with a little help from the experts - the 'Y&R Message Board Posters' - and a look back at the polls, Soaps.com has compiled a New Year's summation of the Best and Worst things about the The Young and the Restless for the year 2008, as well as a bit of a wish list for 2009! Hang on! Here we go!

Best Move of 2008 - the hiring of Billy Miller as Billy Abbott - this guy has chemistry with the frickin' furniture! Runner up is the hiring of Elizabeth Hendrickson as Chloe Mitchell. Both of these actors are extremely good in their complex roles, and love them or hate them, these characters consistently deliver that much needed 'spice' to the canvas!

    Worst Move of 2008
    - By far, the ouster of Don Diamont as Brad Carlton. Huge amounts of viewers, both long and short term, are devastated to see such an integral character leaving the show! We're still begging 'the powers that be' to reconsider!!

    Best Storylines of 2008:

Amber and Daniel's Love Story - this tale of true love between flawed human beings really resonated with a majority of viewers!

Michael's Parental Odyssey - the incredible acting of Christian LeBlanc made the various twists and turns that Michael's life has taken extremely entertaining to watch.

Chloe/Cane/Lily/Billy - as controversial as it is, this is the storyline that everyone is talking about! Most viewers have a favorite couple, or character, that they're pulling for, or one that they love to hate - that makes it a winner!

    Neil's Happy Endings
    - most were happy to see Neil finally get the opportunity to run Newman Enterprises, as well as for him to find love with Karen!

Honorable Mention in this category goes to the Amber/Katherine friendship, which charmed many viewers!

    Worst Storylines of 2008:

The Face Cream Threat - carried over from last year, dragged through all of 2008 - nuff' said!

    The Paris Remote
    - Even for viewers that enjoyed some things that happened in Paris, it was only so-so - for the rest - it fell flat.

    Victor's Diary:
This plot-driven mess hasn't left many viewers feeling satisfied.

Victor Newman Jr/Adam Comes to GC - most viewers are puzzled as to why the writers would bring on the son that Victor Newman had with the wonderful Hope, only to totally trash the character! Many also feel that the character's actions aren't believable, coming from an individual who was raised by Hope!

    Sabrina and David:
Although some were drawn in by Victor's romance with Sabrina, most viewers disliked David from start to finish. The stories that resulted from their deaths, including Victor's depression, the Mexico remote, and Skye's death, all fell flat with beleaguered Y&R viewers.

    Devon's Relatives Come to GC
    - the characters of Tyra and Ana have failed to 'click' with most viewers - yet the writers gleefully keep them going and going like those annoying Energizer bunnies! Viewers: "We can't seem to form an attachment to these characters - cut them loose!" Writers: (hands over ears) "Lalalalalalalalala - can't hear you!"

Honorable Mention in this category goes to the outcome of River's story - most were turned off by the twist that wrote him into a corner. Michael Gross was a very welcome addition to the cast and his interactions with Christian [Michael] and Judith [Gloria] were very compelling! He will be missed!

    Keep Don [Brad]! (CBS)
Love It or Hate It Storyline 2008:

Katherine/Marge - Of course, it's fantastic to see Jeanne Cooper doing her thing as both Katherine and Marge, and falling in love with Murphy, but a few viewers didn't want to go down that 'lookalike' road again.

    Most Controversial Storyline 2008:

Shick [Sharon & Nick] vs Phick [Phyllis & Nick] - although many viewers have an intense loyalty to one or the other of these pairings, a surprising number of viewers are begging for this 'stale' triangle to just end, saying it's no longer interesting! Others are frustrated that the character of Nick doesn't take near as much flak as the women - yet he's the one breaking his commitments!

    Silliest Stories of 2008:

    * Jack Lets Gloria Move In: Puulleeese! As if!!

    * Jack Says He's a Sex Addict: See above!

    * Jack 'Channels' Victor: Unbearable!

    Wishes for 2009!

    * Get Jack back on track! See previous category!

    * Katherine comes back stronger than ever!

    * Chloe's secret is finally revealed! Let the fallout begin!

    * Gloria pays the piper!

    * A great storyline for Amber and Daniel!

    * The return of Nina Webster!

    * A reversal of the Brad exit!

    * Jill gets herself a man!

Here's hoping that the writers at Y&R are listening to you, Soaps.com readers! Hope you all have a wonderful New Year holiday! Join us for a spectacular 2009 right here at Soaps.com!

Happy New Year to you as well!!

Sorry, Michael, I appreciate you taking the time to comment, but if you check our guidelines, you'll see that we do not allow actor bashing at all on the site. We do not have the ability to edit the comments, so it had to be removed. That said, the actor has nothing to do with us loving, or hating, a character!

Thanks again to all who contributed to the list above and to those who have participated in polls on Soaps.com all year!

    Cheers!

Yes, please the return of Nina Webster. She was always one of my favorite characters. I'd love to see Brad stay (with Sharon) too. Would also love to see what happens when the Chloe baby daddy is finally revealed.

I am glad 2008 is history and I hope it remain history no redo of those story lines. Now for 2009, since the writers want to team Billy and Lily as a couple, I think that they should have Billy tell Lily, that he believe that he is Chloe's baby father. Now, he wants her help in proving this because Chloe has denied it. He will tell her how they met in NY etc...how he wants to be a father to the baby if he can prove it is his daughter. He will convince Lily that both he and Cane were just pawns in Chloe's overall scheme to become a Chancellor and produce an heir. This will show Lily that he cares for her by being honest. He can get his friend Rafe, the attorney, to file for joint custody or maybe sole custody, Chloe will probably have a breakdown, when her lies start unraveling. During this time Lily will realize that she have fallen in love with Billy and is finally over Cane. Billy will tell Lily he loves her and want her to be his wife and a mother to his daughter. This bring us hopefully to the big traditional wedding in the spring. I think a story line like this or similiar would help Billy lose the selfish playboy image and prove to Jill, family is first. He will have freed Cane from Chloe's web of deceit and gained custody of his child. The Lane ship have sailed. It time for Cane to move on, maybe with Ashley or Sharon since she is divorcing Jack. Now that would be interesting and entertaining. The Billy/Cane/Chloe/Lily saga solved. Unfortunately it will never happen.

Thank-you Candace for posting this. You rock!! Ihope Y&R shines in 9!! my wish list for 2009 is for lily and billy to be together no matter the outcome, for Mrs.C and Murphy to stay together and Mrs. C regains control of her companies again and leaves Jill out, and it would be totally awesome if Nina comes back. I really liked her character. Maybe the writers will find a way to keep Brad on the show also!

10 reasons to keep BRAD CALTON on Y/R
    1.he is a good actor.
    2.has chemistry with Sharon,
3.has good chemistry with Jill, pliz find a man for Jill.
4.he can dish out trouble as he gets trouble, can stand up to anybody
5.Tyra.she does nothing for me,so can go instead of Brad
6.Olivia.no need for her on the show, doesnt add anthing but boring to the show.so ,can go too.
    7.Chloe,SHOULD GO........
    8.Chloe,its time pliz

Okay I am so excited for a fresh New Year in Genoa City... I think it would be totally cool to finally have Phyllis get her karma for once again trying to play matchmaker in Sharon's life I mean come on! If Sharon wanted Brad she would have stayed with him . I find it refreshing that Brad is leaving. I think the Actor Don is a beautiful man but take a break! This will give Sharon more room to get more involved with Nick and the Flaming Redhead can get what has been coming for a while now!! As for Kathrine please rap that one up quick I forward thru that story line on my DVR cause it's BORING,and tells it self. Also I am so frustrated with Tyra hello who's friend is Olivia? So annoying! I am so thankful that she didn't stop the wedding. Neil seems to be one of the faithful guys so Tyra I can't stand you get your own man! And yes please bring back Nina I grew up with the Nina and Cricket Trio she's just a refreshing face. Happy New Year!!!
