    Twisted sisters? (CBS)
    Restless Rant
    Week of October 15 – 19:

One week in with the new "Y&R" writing team and the characters are already more sharply defined, with some seeming edgier, the pace has picked up to a very satisfying degree, and the sets look great. Some of the storyline adjustments and cast changes have given viewers a jolt, but on the whole it’s been a positive transition. Congrats to all concerned! Thoughts for the week:

    Witch hunt.
A decision was obviously made to wrap up the hit-and-run case in a hurry and to move forward with the fallout. This made for some illogical legal goings-on, but it was worth it to see the look on Christine’s mug when the judge informed her she was the reason the case was being dismissed. Not saying 'the Bug's' point-of-view wasn't legit, just that she's annoying and often obnoxiously self-righteous, so it was satisfying to see her rendered momentarily speechless. As for Phyllis, we'll have to presume she’s paying for her crimes to some extent by losing Summer and Nick. Moving forward, Christine is pursuing a civil suit, Ronan is pursuing Phyllis (let’s not turn him into a level 5 stalker please), and Avery appears to be pursuing Nick, which makes for tons of conflict, but isn’t a particularly welcome development as far as Avery’s character goes – kind of icky. One loose thread not addressed in all of this was Danny and Christine’s ‘second chance’. For more on this, read’s interview with Michael Damian.

    The D.A. blues.
Life isn’t a bowl of cherries for Michael right now. He’s on the outs with Kevin, who dialed him in about the realities of the job he’s doing, and though Phyllis walked, he’s still super stressed out about having to prosecute Paul. He chose to let Ronan off the hook, which probably relieved a little of his tension, but they seem to be making a point of focusing on Michael's exhaustion – foreshadowing? As for Paul’s case, it was uproariously funny how Eden spewed out these nonsensical words from a dream and the Mystery Inc. crew deciphered them within minutes to reveal the probable location of Ricky’s murder video. Really? It was way ridiculous, but what the heck. Go Paul!

    Chilling. (CBS)
    Riley Newman.
Probably the most enticing development from the new writing team was the chilling set-up of Adam uttering to Nick, "Your daughter killed my son." We’re seeing an edgier Adam distancing himself from Chelsea’s pain, since, as he revealed to Sharon, he feels karmically responsible, and re-entering a new phase in his rivalry with his siblings and father. Chelsea had some amazing scenes this week – the one where she named the baby and then wailed, and the other when she told Summer what she’d done. Gah. It will be interesting to see if Adam and Chelsea will survive this, since his guilt is now compounded with lies, as his reconnection with Sharon has complicated life even more. Sharon’s meltdown was an appropriate climax to the story she’s been playing out, and with Adam being the one to rescue her, Friday’s episode left me full of foreboding that he’ll be blamed for torching the ranch. After all, Sharon won’t remember, Nick will think it was retaliation for the baby, and Chelsea will only know that he lied and smelled like smoke. Dun, dun, dun...

    Jack splat?
Jack may be on top of the world right now, but that makes for a long fall to get your feet back on the ground. There’s no denying Jack has every reason to feel justified in celebrating ‘besting’ Victor, who has made a fool and an ass out of him repeatedly, yet somehow we expect Jack to be better than that, so his greed and gloating disappoints us and is uncomfortable to watch. The idea that Billy would agree to spy on Jack doesn’t work for me, nor does the idea that Victoria would ask that of him. Off kilter.

    Proceeding as planned.
Please make it end. This mystery woman stuff is tiresome and as silly as it comes. Lily, Cane, and the rest of us need to be free of it. As for Cane repeatedly mentioning his hopes for a promotion, something tells me he’s going to be let down by Jack. In other news, Lily’s family is missing in action.

    I really hate that Adam is going to be blamed for the fire and that this might pull he and Chelsea apart;

    I really hate the smugness of the Newmans, Nikki backing Victor all the way after breaking Jack's heart; Vikki asking Billy to spy on his brother; and Nick just being Nick;

I really hate that Sharon is having yet another breakdown. Having no one on her side, not even Noah. Hopefully new writing is on the horizon for her - make her strong, independent and smarter than she's been.

I really hate that Adam and Chelsea lost Riley.

I hate that Phyllis still hasn't paid for any of the horrible stuff that she's done. I hope more of her past deeds reach out to bite her on her backside.

The new writing is so much beter and faster.

I was disappointed with the conclusion of Phyllis's case. It seemed like they were sweeping this storyline under the rug and trying to forget it ever happened. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with Paul's case.

Adam is reacting the same way Nick did when Cassie died - burying their feelings rather than dealing with them.

It hasn't been long enough for me to comment on the new writers. Hoping they have some new and fresh ideas in store for us. Nice to see a new set - Avery's apartment.

I think we will all have to endure some painful character changes (as in their character) as well as people we love departing and new people coming in while the writers try to turn it around. I am willing to sit by and let it all happen as the changes needed to be made.
I hate that Adam is going to go back to a bad boy (which it appears) but his sudden change from Evil to God was a little unbelievable and they need to right that character as painful as it will be for all of us.
Not having the winters family around has not upset me at all and really, doesn't change the focus of the show. what does that tell you. I pray they do not bring Dru back.
It is going to be painful watching some of the changes but I think by the time it is all said and done, the changes will be welcome to bring us back the show and why we all loved it in the first place.
Cane and Lily need some storyline apart from the stranger.
I for one am totally into having a Nick and Avery hook up. It would be nice to have a Newman actually with someone who is successful in their own right and not need Newman money or jobs. Go for it! As long as Phyllis and Nick don't ever get back together again, I am all for it.

Always enjoy your take on the week Candace. I totally agree with NorthernFan that Adam's reaction to Riley's death paralels Nick's to Cassie's. I am so dissapointed that he is neglecing Chelsea at this time and turning to Sharon. I think we all knew Sharon would crash sooner or later. Maybe now the Newman ranch will have a more modern house. I don't really believe Victor can give up fighting for Newman Ent. for long.Vicky is his daughter after all and Nick goes off and pursues his own, what shall I call it, desires?

I don't understand why the Winter's family can't get an interesting story. I don't want to see Dru come back even though their s/l was more interesting then. Phyliss is getting wierder. I'm sure she won't get Nick back and now she'll be back to hating her sister. I think the new writers are going to take Phyl back more to her old character the way she was before she got Nick.

I hated every episode this week. The writing had holes in it the size of the Grand Canyon. Phyliis ays to Avery that accident was okay because no one was hurt...and Avery does not correct her. I won't watch if I have to scream at the tv because the writing is insultingly bad.

I was glad Jack got at least one win, even if it will of course be temporary. But the fact that Billy was even TEMPTED to spy on his own brother is just wrong. Jack was in Billy's corner way before Victoria even crossed his path. The fact that he would be willing to stab him in the back for her, that she would even ASK Billy to do such a thing, just gives me another reason to NOT like that pairing.

I loved the new Adam and Chelsea and I hate the fact that he's getting roped into another of Sharon's messes someone needs to give her a good old news flash more important thing in life than her problems. Adam needs to make Summer pay for the death of his son that will make a great storyline. As for Phyllis she is getting exactly what she deserves and I pray that Nick and Avery hook up and rub it in Phyllis face.

Really liking the new writers so far overall!

Surprised to see Adam go so quickly from adoring Chelsea to distancing himself from her. Not really surprised he'd help Sharon though. I just didn't think he'd end up getting himself in so deep with Sharon. It will be interesting to see how the Newmans react when she's discovered as the fire starter.

Adam should go after Summer though for the accident. I'm surprised they haven't had a scene of him trying to do so. But, perhaps the new writers aren't trying to rush something there.

Victoria asking Billy to spy didn't shock me--figured as much. Victoria is still on her high horse, but it seems like she may be the only one aside from Abby that will have a role in getting the company back. Nick doesn't seem interested, which does surprise me a bit.

I really wish Nick and Avery wouldn't happen. I like Avery as the strong, independent woman she seems to be. She's wayyyy too smart to be hooking up with a horndog like Nick in my opinion. It'll be a downside to her character if she gets with him. Avery and Phyllis drama sure, but I always had Avery pegged above that. I really wanted to see Avery and Phyllis get closer, but with this looming, it's highly doubtful. I can see it now--Nick, Avery, and Summer all sitting around the fire while Phyllis sulks in her apartment, further driving a wedge between them.

Poor Genevieve. They could have done SO much more with her character. It's a pity they have her in this silly storyline (which could have been a good one if it was played out properly). I'll be sad when she exits the show. Truly a waste of talent and a missed oppertunity to really turn her character into a power player.
