    Myanmar missy. (
    Restless Rant
    Week of January 2 – 6:

There’s some unhappiness out there with the general state of "The Young and the Restless" right now. Complaints include newer characters taking airtime from core favorites, too much bed-hopping, too much gloom and doom, storylines left hanging or dragging out, and storylines/characters that just aren’t working for viewers. Though each of these points has a degree of merit, there’s still been plenty to enjoy. Some thoughts on this week’s happenings:

    New Year’s Eve.
It was a little too convenient for Phyllis and Nick’s dates to both have an epiphany at the same time, and it was weird that Ronan kissed his way into Phyllis’s penthouse before suddenly announcing he was going home, but the premise that Nick and Phyllis aren’t done with each other is certainly believable is the reality that they still have unresolved issues. Meanwhile over at Jimmy’s Bar, Adam got loaded and drunk-dialed Sharon, before ambling over to her house and learning that his father had proposed to her. Adam leaving without a word certainly made an impression.

    Misery from Myanmar.
We always knew there was something unresolved for Billy to deal with, and we demanded that it be shocking enough to explain why Billy kowtowed to Victor’s bullying. Now that Chelsea’s here with her allegations, the only thing that I don’t understand is if Billy believes he didn’t do anything wrong, and it’s the first he’s heard of the rape accusations, why did he allow Victor to keep him from Delia and Vikki in the first place? The silver lining for Billy/Vikki fans is that the couple is finally facing a problem together. Do you think Victor finessed a DNA swap from behind bars to ensure the results showed Billy as the not-so-proud-papa?

    Girl power.
Some of our female characters have really dished it out this week, and it’s been amazing to watch. Kevin’s disappearing act has had the unforeseen benefit of giving Chloe back her spark. The scenes in Jimmy’s Bar where the girls all had Vikki’s back, and Chloe declared herself one drink away from kicking some ass, were brilliant. I didn’t mind the Daniel/Chloe kiss either. Even sourpuss Eden taking a photo to send Kevin was interesting. As for other females – Nikki’s been a joy to watch as she’s taken on Sharon and Chelsea, and though it may be unrealistic that Billy rehired her, Phyllis is certainly back in her element at Restless Style stirring up trouble. More girl power please!

    Glass wall marriage.
As much as viewers hate the idea of Sharon with Victor, it’s obviously a tactic on Victor’s part, as opposed to a romance. The Nikki and Sharon conflict has been fantastic to watch, as has the controversy between Nick and Sharon. The angst of Sharon and Adam is always a treat, and this week the playing field was leveled a bit as Sharon let Adam go ahead and be arrested. That said, it drove me nuts that Sharon left that ring on all week even though she hadn’t accepted the proposal – seemingly doing so just because Victor told her to. I would have loved to see her tell The Mustache that she wasn’t going to be used as a pawn in his plan, but she didn’t, so if nothing else it will be interesting to see what twists are ahead, particularly if Vic gets out of jail.

    Super Harmony at work. (
    Super Harmony.
Harmony’s come a long way from the park bench – and fast! She’s fitting in well, but it’s a tad unbelievable to see this woman who has supposedly spent her entire adult life partying and struggling with addiction issues become everyone’s go-to person seemingly overnight. Somehow it's not that upsetting though, because the character is definitely feeling like a keeper. Devon’s interactions with Harmony and Tucker were good viewing this week, and left me wondering if Neil will feel left out.

Over the falls without a barrel.
The Angelo/Angelina storyline still hasn’t improved, sorry to say. Angelo doesn’t cut it as another power player, or as a leading man, and Angelina is straight up annoying. It doesn’t even make sense that Angelo is angry about his daughter being with Kevin. Here’s an idea - let’s strand Angelo and Angelina on an island, bring Jeffrey back, and give Kevin a new storyline.

    The cat came back.
It’s hard to believe Ol’ Smilin’ Jack hasn’t made the connection between the strange happenings, hearing Patty’s voice, and Dave the cat, but something’s got to give where Patty is concerned as she seems ready to snap – again.

    Solve that case.
Here’s hoping Diane’s murder is solved very soon - it's time to move on. It’s fine to play out stories in real time if they are compelling enough to hold viewers’ interest along the way, but this one just hasn’t been consistently intense enough to capture and hold the attention. Also, let’s be honest - how much of a payoff is there in finding out who killed Diane Jenkins when people weren’t that invested in the character to begin with?

excellent rant! I especially love your comments about Super Harmony(why isn't she using her real name again? what is her real name??)I found the scene between, she, Tucker, Devon and Neal to be contrived(obviously) but for her to radomly blurt out about some rapper she read about on the computer, and then rushing over to show the site...a bit...meh..*eyeroll*

    Beautiful Rant! Agreed!
I certainly feel like "Poor billy", just when he thinks he can get his life back and of course, he's in crap again. Poor guy, can't catch a break. Of course Victor had something to do with it but perhapsshe raped billy and not the other way around, he is a dog but rape, no way, not our billy!
The whole Patty thing has me screaming "What the hell are you doing Y & R"? I hate storylines that don't go away, been there done that, please, lets move on past Patty....Please. So unbelievable that she would even escape in the first place....PLEASE!
Harmony is good because the person playing her, I think she has potential but like a lot of other fans, lets stick with who we have that kept Y & R #1 for so long and get rid of the one's that really, take up screen time....hmmm...Angelo and Angelina, again...PLEASE!

It was great to see Paul again (he had been missing since December 9), but his scene with his son was really too short.
More airtime for Paul and Ricky, please writers.

How about one steady core happy couple in the show. I would like to see a couple who is devoted to each other and the example people want to be. A couple with "normal" every day struggles but also a couple that expresses humor, faithfullness and lean on each other. We viewers need something positive too and a happy relationship we could live vicariously through.

The Diane murder is about to be solved--now that Paul is woking with Ronan again. Of course it will be Paul to realize the murderer is his sister. That's so creepy to watch her stalking Jack. I was a viewer on the day Jack married Patty when Ashley first came on the show and found him and Diane together. Stories that have a basis in 25 year old history are interesting to me.

I also remember when Sharon kissed Victor years ago. It was disgusting then and is disgusting now. I don't like Victor. But, as a LONG time viewer, I always root for him and Nikki to reunite (even though I know it won't last).

Finally, please give Jill a storyline. She's the last remaining original character. She was a sweet girl in the beginning. Even when she fell in love with Phillip, she resisted because of her loyalty to Kay. I believe she really loved John Abbott. Let's move her beyond being a shrew. Maybe she needs to take in a young woman as her personal assistant, and replay the Kay/Jill history with Jill in the older woman's role.

Yea to Billy and Victoria. I absolutely love Billy. He reminds me so much of the original Jack (Terry Lester), and he looks like he could be Jerry Douglas'(John) son. Give the guy a break.

Maybe because it's your job to write this blog, you have to find something positive to say about this!

But you can't tell me that this Victor/Sharon marriage is fantastic or an interesting tactic from victor. It makes 0 sense for Sharon to marry victor. It's just a bad plot-point that really destroys the character of Sharon because we all know if Bill Vell was still alive and writi g this show it would never happen. Because he actually cared about this show. Maria Bell doesn't care, as evident of the amount of newbies she constantly hires.

People on twitter were offended of the dialogue of Harmony, "miss Phyliss" as if she was back in the south? It's 2012. And now tgat Maria Bell decided to further backburn the veterans and keep hiring AMC actors for stunt casting, DM and DW will both be written as an advertisement for AMC old viewers. No one is happy about that.

In tge end you are right Candace. So many people are tired of the foolishness on this show.

I applaud you for trying to saying something positive, but it really is just bad. And I love how everyone is saying how bad it is on twitter and how they want Maria Bell fired.

    Pretty good rant.
But the Victor/Sharon thing- that's just gross. It's almost like incest- he has known her since she & Nick were teen lovers. Payback for Nick with Diane? And Victoria slept with Decon, now Mom is? ANd Sharon was married to Jack, and had a couple of rolls in the hay with Billy, so brothers are a commonly used story line- Drew and the Winters boys, Olivia and Neil, (thus sisters too) Phyliss, her sister Avery, and Nick - again - the siblings must share everything - even bed companions? Oh yes, almost forgot about Chloe & Heater each sharing Ronan and Chance.
God, let's hope none of them have HPV, or herpes, or anything else that keeps on giving!
Seems almost like thw writers just keep recycling the same old storylines, using different characters. Where is their imagination? Nothing wrong with using a new idea once in a while folks.
