In 1991, Neil Winters was freshly out of Stanford and working as an executive trainee at Newman Enterprises. Although he first fell for Drucilla's sister Olivia, in the end, it was Dru who won Neil's heart. After the two married, Neil's estranged brother Malcolm came to Genoa City.
While Neil was out of town on business, Dru had been sick and medicated in bed when Malcolm stopped by for a visit. Thinking he was Neil, Malcolm didn't object to Dru's advances and they made love! This secret stayed buried for many years to come.
Neil and Dru soon found themselves to be the parents of a little girl, Lily. However, shortly after, Neil was forced to become a 'long distance' dad when Dru signed a modeling contact and took Lily to Paris! When Neil couldn't accept or support Dru's career path, she filed for divorce with no intentions of coming back to GC.
Although unintentional, Neil fell in love with Malcolm's fiancee Alex Perez. Neil didn't want to hurt his brother, but after losing his best friend Ryan McNeil, Neil got drunk and blurted out to Malcolm that he was in love with Alex! Malcolm was furious and hated being around Neil. However, since they all worked together, Alex and Malcolm were sent to Kenya with Neil and Victoria Newman overseeing things. During their trip, Malcolm overheard Alex tell Neil that she hadn't been honest about her feelings, but Malcolm didn't hang around to hear Alex tell Neil that she was in love with Malcolm. After Alex left, Malcolm tracked Neil down and clocked him in the mouth! Later that day, Neil was stunned to hear that a bridge had collapsed and Malcolm's car had plummeted into a river below.
After Malcolm was presumed dead, Neil returned to GC, quit his job at Newman, and hit the bottle hard, becoming a full-blown alcoholic. In 2002, Dru and Lily came back from Paris in an attempt to help Neil get back on his feet. Although it took time, Neil started to realize that he wanted his family back. Shortly after Dru and Lily moved back into the apartment, it was only a matter of time before he and Dru reconciled.
With his life back on track, Neil was rehired at Newman and Dru went on to work for Jabot. For a while, Neil and Dru were swamped with work, leaving Lily with a lot of time to get into trouble. Although Lily ran into the arms of Kevin Fisher, who ended up using her, Neil and Dru were able to work together and save their daughter from losing more than her virginity.
2005 would be the start of many ups and downs in Neil's life. When Lily and Dru came to Neil wanting to help out troubled teen Devon Hamilton, he wanted no part of it. However, Neil finally gave in and took Devon into their home on a temporary foster basis. During this time, Neil was shocked when Malcolm showed up in GC after thought to be dead! Malcolm was still resentful of Neil, but later came to Neil's side after a car accident almost took his life, and the two finally made a mends.
Just when Neil thought he had it all, a loving wife, two great kids (Lily and his new foster son Devon), a second chance with the brother he thought he had lost, and a great job to support them all, Neil's world plummeted when he found out that Lily wasn't his daughter but rather his brother Malcolm's! With the deception to much to bear, Neil's marriage quickly began falling apart, but his relationship with Lily never faltered - even though she ran off and married Daniel Romalotti!
Neil began throwing himself into his work and soon found that he enjoyed spending time with Newman's PR rep Carmen Mesta. Although Dru was still hounding him with apologies, Carmen made Neil forgot about the past and prompted him to look to the future - even encouraged him to follow his dreams and open a jazz club, which he did months later: Club Indigo.
However, after Dru started harassing Carmen and fighting for their marriage, Neil saw a different side to Carmen and thought better of pursuing their relationship. He went back to Dru, blaming himself for her legal troubles where Carmen was concerned, and decided to make his marriage work. It wouldn't be long before Neil found Carmen dead behind his Club with people looking to him as a suspect!
To make matters worse, Neil's foster son Devon came down with meningitis and as a result became deaf. Although the Winters pulled through the Mesta murder (they were cleared), an even bigger disaster faced Neil when Drucilla went over a cliff and was presumed dead. The widower eventually moved on with the help of Lily and Devon, and moved in with Karen Taylor.
Victor asked Neil to take over as CEO of Newman Enterprises after Sabrina died, and Adam messed up the opportunity. Neil eagerly agreed, and hired back Victoria right away! Neil was challenged when Devon's relatives Tyra and Ana showed up on the doorstep. Tyra was Devon's aunt, who was raising Devon's sister as her own. When they temporarily bunked with Neil, sparks flew between Tyra and Neil. In the end, their dalliance caused the end of his marriage to Karen.
Neil then dealt with Lily's cancer, accepted her reconciliation with husband, Cane, and began seeing Ashley Abbott. Neil's brother, Malcolm, returned after being away for five years. Ashley ended up cheating on Neil with Tucker McCall, but Neil ended things with her before she even came clean. He wanted to spend more time with his family, and sold Indigo to Jeff and Gloria. When Sofia Dupre arrived in town from Europe, Neil had instant friction with her. But since she was the fiancée of his brother Malcom they were forced to spend time together as a family. Eventually, Neil warmed up to Sofia.
When Cane was thought dead after being accidentally shot by Colin, Neil comforted his grieving daughter Lily and took her to the morgue to say goodbye to Cane. Malcolm blamed Sofia because she had been helping Cane, and Sofia and Neil ended up sleeping together. But then Malcom changed his mind and wanted Sofia back, and the wedding was back on. Neil couldn’t stop thinking about Sofia, but she married Malcolm anyway. When Sofia realized she was pregnant on her honeymoon Neil wondered if the baby might be his. Sofia wondered too and planned to lie about her due date to ensure Neil thought it was Malcolm’s baby, but a medical emergency forced her to tell everyone the baby might be Neil’s. After Moses was born it was confirmed Neil was the dad. Malcolm divorced Sofia and Neil brought them home to live with him. Neil and Sofia were soon married.
Katherine begged Neil to return as CEO of Chancellor and he agreed. He offered Sofia a job but she turned him down because she was still working for Tucker. Mad, Neil spent the evening with Harmony and they ended up kissing. Neil admitted his growing feelings for Harmony to Sofia and she filed for divorce. Neil briefly dated Harmony, but she soon left town.
After Jack took over Newman Enterprises he wanted Neil to be the CEO of Jabot. After getting Katherine’s approval Neil took Jack up on his job offer. He hired Leslie as the company’s legal advisor, assuring her that despite their past their relationship would remain strictly business. That didn’t last long and they were soon hot and heavy.
Neil was targeted by someone seeking revenge, someone who ransacked his apartment and posted sensitive stories about him and his loved ones on GC Buzz. Neil publicly dared his attacker to come forward while Leslie was able to identify the person as connected to Neil’s alcoholic past. Through hypnosis Neil was able to remember a woman named Rose, a bar buddy who ended up dying after a night of drinking with Neil. Neil determined the person had to be the woman’s daughter, Ann Turner, who was actually Cane’s assistant Hilary Curtis. Neil explained to Hilary what happened his last night with Rose and asked her to stop hurting his loved ones. After a heart-to-heart with Hilary he started a scholarship fund in Rose’s name, and she eventually forgave Neil. He then offered Hilary a job at Jabot as Jack's assistant.
Neil proposed to Leslie and she said yes, but then dragged her feet on wedding planning. Neil confronted her about her lack of interest and she admitted her rocky childhood put her off marriage. She wanted to be with Neil without getting married but he would take no less and ended their relationship completely.
After Neil and Hilary traveled to LA together to meet with Forrester Creations, sparks flew. And when Neil learned Leslie married someone else so quickly after their breakup Hilary comforted him. They kissed, and a few days later made love. They agreed to keep their relationship a secret since they knew his family would not approve. Neil and Hilary finally went public with the family, which did not go over well with Lily and Devon. Hilary moved in with Neil which only fueled their ire. On father’s day, Neil proposed to Hilary and they were married the next day. Only Devon showed up.
Neil began looking for Hilary’s dream house and found it, but was electrocuted messing with the wiring after the lights went out. At the hospital Neil learned he might never see again. He asked Devon to look after Hilary for him, unaware his son and wife were having an affair. Neil refused to be babied and pushed himself to get back to work at Jabot but it became clear it was too soon. While he was on a leave of absence his brother Malcolm came to visit and the two made peace. Malcolm made Neil realize he needed to stop blocking out the people he loved and Neil began to open up.
Neil noticed that Hilary kept making excuses to avoid intimacy. He told Hilary he was ready to have a baby and she pretended to throw away her birth control pills. When he later found the pills she told him she wasn’t ready yet. Meanwhile, Neil kept the fact he was beginning to see a secret from everyone. He finally confided in Cane and swore him to secrecy. When he secured an appointment with a doctor, he finally told Hilary and she shared the news with Devon.

Nikki wanders in a brightly lit space. A man calling himself Angel appears and gets her to recall what happened. She flashes back to her children bringing her to the ranch to discuss the merger. She's surprised to see that the whole family is there. Nikki assumes the Newmans are ganging up against the Abbotts and starts lecturing them until Dylan arrives. She guesses something else is going on. "An intervention? You think that's the answer?" she asks Victor. Before she can storm out, she runs into Yack. He escorts her out of the doorway. Her grandchildren beg her to listen. Victor tries talking Yack into leaving but Yack doesn't think it's what Jack would do. As everyone gathers around, Nikki admits that she drinks sometimes but they are really overreacting. She doesn't need to justify taking the edge off when her life is so full of stress. Neil's told himself those lies too. He reminds her that he killed Paul and Christine's baby because he couldn't face his problem. When he brings up her taking Walt back to her room, Nikki is furious. He threatens to walk away from her the next time she's in trouble. That's fine with her. Victor won't let her walk out. She feels like she's surrounded by jackals. Her children and grandchildren line up to talk about how much they care about her and how much it hurts to see her suffering. Nick reminds her that he already lost a daughter thanks to alcohol. Nikki feels like she's being judged. Victoria reminds her about dropping the baby. "Get help or I will never allow you around your grandchildren again," she warns. Nikki thinks she'll regret that and orders them to move along. Yack urges her to choose life. He's profoundly sad to see her wasting her life. None of this sounds right to Nikki. Victor worries about how this is affecting the family. She throws that back in his face and reminds him that he turned his back on her after the mess with Ian. He doesn't have anything to add. Neil encourages Victor to explain his feelings but Nikki has had her fill. "Let's turn this Nikki bashing into a real bash!" she declares, breaking out the booze. Victor asks her to stop for the sake of the grandchildren. "Shame on me!" she groans. The glass slips from her hands and she collapses.
Nikki visits the cemetery and watches her family and friends speaking at her grave. Dylan tells them all to focus on how much she loved them. Nick has realized how much they were alike. Victor grieves that he could never find the right words. He's left alone to sob. He thought that he could fix her but he failed because he didn't listen to her. He wishes that he'd told her what she meant to him. "I'm so damned lonely now," he says. After he shuffles off to a bench in tears, she looks at her grave. She sits with him. He thought their love would get them through everything. She tells herself that she needs to take responsibility for herself. Finally, she snaps out of it. She's in rehab talking to a counsellor named Angel. He tells her that she's had a moment of clarity that allowed her to admit she needed help. He thinks they can give that to her.
Neil bangs on Nikki's door at the club until she stumbles out of bed to answer. She doesn't want to talk to him. He notices Walt, the man he punched the other night, in her bed. Nikki gasps. Neil wakes him up. Walt insists that she came on to him. Nikki flashes back to dragging Walt into her room. Neil kicks him out anyway and reminds her that she's married. "This is his fault!" she complains, blaming Victor. He tells her this is all her fault and she needs to be accountable. As he runs her a shower, she calls security. The guard escorts him out. She finds a bottle of vodka in the sheets and looks at herself with disgust in the mirror. In the dining room downstairs,Victoria tells Billy that Nikki is in denial. She wishes she could help her. Billy says she needs to want to help herself, that's the way addicts are. She's sure nothing good will come out of this considering all the meds her mom is on. He offers to help. Meanwhile, Nick helps Sage lotion up on the club's rooftop. He challenges her to go swimming and strips down to his trunks. After they swim, she admits that she's worried about what kind of mom she'll be. Nick tells her everyone makes mistakes and she won't be alone. He gets a call from his sister. They head downstairs and his sister fills him in about GC Buzz calling their drunken mother 'naughty Nikki'. Victor isn't doing anything and she's worried. Neil joins them to explain that Victor enlisted him to help. He's found a therapist to do an intervention but they have to do it immediately. The siblings head up to their mom's room and tell her they need to go to the ranch for dinner with Victor. She looks for excuses but after spotting the vodka bottle in the trash, they insist on taking her. Downstairs, Billy tells Sage about how she will one day be the mother to one of Victor's grandchildren. She doesn't think that she's in the same boat he was. He warns that what happened to Sharon, could happen to her too.
Neil drops by the lab to ask Jack to attend the intervention. He can't find him so he asks Phyllis to pass along the message.
