Avery goes home and looks at Dylan's dog tags. Nick arrives. She tells him Dylan checked out of the hospital - she assumes he left town. Nick isn't sure he'll give up. Avery talks about her appeals case. Nick makes it clear he feels neglected so she kisses him and starts taking his clothes off.
Avery and Dylan begin kissing urgently in her apartment as Nick shows up outside the door. He knocks and hollers that it's Ned Nickerson. Avery lets him in and he sees Dylan. They bicker about pressuring her. Nick snarks that Dylan's an officer and a gentleman for staying with Avery in the storm. Nick leaves. Dylan asks her, "What now?" She tells him the kiss made her realize that what they had is over. He doesn't understand. She tells him the kiss was beautiful, and she thought of him every day for two years, but she said goodbye and gave herself permission to move on. He wants them to share a life. She says she's not free and sobs that she's sorry to hurt him. Dylan says Nick's a lucky guy.
Nick opens his door to Avery. They embrace and start kissing.
Mason tells Nick how great The Underground is, and then Nick deals with a drunk in Avery's booth. He ends up sitting down with him to talk about Avery. The man tells Nick he's a lucky guy and to go after love. Nick offers him a cot in the back.
At The Underground, Nick listens to the report forecasting bad weather for Valentine's Day. He calls Avery in Milwaukee and worries about her tires. He suggests she just let him pick her up but she thinks she'll be fine. His son joins him and they discuss the weather before Nick fills him in about Dylan. Nick feels like Avery is pulling away from him since this dude came back from the dead.
In his room, Dylan calls his dad to check in. He starts flashing back to his past with Avery and giggles to himself. Getting in bed, he goes through his diary. Nick shows up with Dylan's pay for the other day. Avery calls Nick to say she is heading back. Nick makes it clear to Dylan that he won't step aside for him, even if he got a raw deal. "Neither will I," Dylan says.
At The Underground, Nick confronts Dylan, who isn't surprised Avery told him the truth - she doesn't run from anything. Dylan says he owes him an explanation. Nick wonders if he thinks he has a future with her. Dylan tells him how he met Avery, about promising to come back to her after Afghanistan, and buying her an engagement ring. He explains that Avery broke it off so he went for another tour of duty. The thought of seeing Avery again got him through it. Nick says he'll be the one supporting Avery. Avery appears. Dylan goes. Avery asks Nick if Dylan said where he's been. Nick says not a word. They have a drink. Nick says Dylan's still deeply in love with her. He assures her he won't push, wants her in his life. Avery says she has to go to Milwaukee tonight - it's best; she needs a break to think.
At the Club, Jack tells Phyllis that Neil is his sponsor. Victor appears and insults them. Jack tells him how great Adam and Sharon are doing with Newman. Victor mentions the Congressman's daughter. Jack says they both have to keep that quiet - almost makes them allies. Phyllis goes. Later, Nick arrives at the bar and calls Avery to wish her luck. Phyllis returns to get her phone. She notes Nick's sad look and sarcastically says she's always there for him.
Over lunch at the GCAC, Jack and Phyllis talk about how it's not a date. Phyllis spots Nick at the bar and goes over. She mentions the nightclub opening and says she signed the divorce papers. Bach at the table, Jack suggests they check out Nick's club together. Phyllis tells him she likes them being just friends.
Nick enters the tackhouse as Noah is trying to reach Adriana. Noah fills Nick in on the latest. Nick is opposed to Noah being further involved.
