I was HIGHLY offended today Thursday (6/28.12) by Ricky, being shown standing over the seemingly lifeless body of Eden, whom he has just killed or wounded terribly by slamming her against a bathtub (seems he likes to kill in bathrooms!) - and he has a BUTCHER KNIFE in his hand - the intimation being he is either going to finish off the job if she is not quite gone, or he is going to cut her up in pieces!
I watched All My Children (AMC) for 20 years until it went off the air last September. Earlier this year, I discovered several AMC cast members - old and new - had moved to The Young and The Restless, so I began watching this program. Initially, I really enjoyed it because it was very similar in format and approach to AMC, but during the past few days, the show has taken a disturbingly dark turn. It's one thing to give us hints that Ricky killed Dasy, who has disappeared, and pinned her disappearance on her husband, Daniel. This is implication, background, and shows nothing shocking on the screen. It's quite another to SHOW Ricky with the knife in his hand stancing over Eden, a sweet young girl, whom he has just told he would kill her! This show is broadcast at 1 pm, a Daytime program young children could watch and possibly be traumatized by what they are seeing. Even though I know this is not real, a TV show and these are actors, I felt traumatized!!! I TIVOd this episode & watched it before bed - and then couldn't sleep - the image of Ricky with the butcher knife kept rolling around my mind!
OK, now it's Friday, 6/29/12, and Y&R compounded the problem! During the past week, not only did they actually show Ricky graphically drowning a former girlfriend in the bathtub and they also implied he had "done away with" Daisy. Today, they finished it off with a literal BANG when his Father shot him, causing him to fly backwards out a and a second-story glass window, presumably to his death! Would you like any child you know to view programming like this at 1:00 in the afternoon? Where are the censors? I wouldn't watch something this violent at night! I cannot comprehend how they got away with this. What was once a plesant program, albeit filled with drama, has become very stark. I've watched soaps for many years, and I have never viewed scenes like this. The only good thing about Friday's program was the hope that Eden may regain consciousness and pull through after hitting her head on the bathtub pushed by Ricky and then held in his arms at knifepoint. If this is the way Y&R "gets rid" of characters when the actors get another job, it is hideous and not worthy of Daytime TV.

I'm sorry you were traumatised. It was in fact a violent week on the show. Despite that I enjoyed the acting of all involved.

Does anyone now what the rating is for the Y&R? I doubt its G.

I'm also sorry that this show caught you by surprise and upset you.

I know, in Canada, most shows with violence or sexual scenes are preceeded by a warning that they may not be suitable for some viewers so that you have a chance to decide if you want to watch anyway or if you'd rather avoid it. I don't remember hearing that before Y&R comes on. Although it is possible that it is there and my mind, getting so used to hearing it before so many shows has just filtered it out. Given the type of subject matter covered in this show now, it would probably be best if it were stated at the start.

As far as why Y&R has gone this route( of so much violence), well, I guess it is part of MAB's determination to hit the fans with what she has referred to as "shock and awe".

She seems to think this is the way to get the ratings up although so far it doesn't seem to be working, the ratings continue to fall. Still she continues to churn out a combination of disgusting sexual hook ups and violence.
Last years murder of Diane while less graphic certainly contained material(like the body floating face down in the pond), that could have been upsetting to sensitive viewers.

For myself, I'm not all that sensitive. I realize that this is fiction and accept the violence here as I would in so many TV shows or movies that are made these days, nd lots not even start talking about some of the video games out there.

In the end it is, I think, as it always has been, the job of parents to monitor and control what their children watch. It is a job that gets more and more difficult as the availability and ease of access to all kinds of media continues to expand.

I am afraid there has always been a lot of violence on Y&R. Didn't one of Nina's evil husbands get killed in a trash compactor? It is also unsuitable for youngsters because of the constant casual sex.

Hello It's Not Real - and thank you for agreeing with me the gratuitous volence is unnecessary - or - at the very least, a WARNING at the beginning of the program should be posted for people like me and parents. It's even used on animal programs when animals are being hurt in some way. I turn those off!

As to young children viewing Daytime programs, if Moms are watching, maybe doing household chores and NOT EXPECTING things to happen as they did, why would they monitor their children when they never knew they had to? I have only been watching Y & R a couple of months, but so far have not seen any gratuitous sex (there was plenty on All My Children!).

I implore CBS to ADD a warning to this show. I do not have young children or grandchildren myself. But years ago when I began watching All My Children in the 1980s, I did have two young daughters who - during the summer - would watch sometimes while I ironed (shades of yesteryear - who irons any more?). I would not want any child or grandchild of mine or anyones to witness what I did this past week.

The only good thing about Friday's show - the moral, if you will - was that Ricky was shot (presumably killed,) but it was shown in a terribly violent way and with his father suffering terribly - very upsetting all the way around! I agree with others that the actors who play Ricky and Daisy are excellent in their roles and provide the "bad guys" that seem to be a necessary part of soaps. Victor is a "bad guy", too, and has undoubtedly done bad things, but I have not seen his actions or things he has caused to happen portrayed in such a graphic manner! Actually, I find him very interesting and amusing at times. He also has good sides to his character, as did Adam, his counterpart on All My Children. You would not believe the parallels I can draw between these two programs.

I want to continue watching Y & R and hope things will slow down now that Ricky admitted to killing so many - Daniel should be released and new crises can arise - the return of Abby for one. The only other possiblity is that Ricky survived his fall (unlikely but once a character fell from an plane on AMC and survived!) and will be hospitalized, along with Eden, a favorite soap ploy - several in the hospital at once so they can use the set. The other usual ploy is that a character is NOT dead unless you actually see the body. Ricky thought he killed Daisy, but she is a good character (because of what she does - and it's not graphic - so far, in fact, she has managed to convince me she is "misunderstood"), so I doubt they will actually kill her off.

Ricky did not mention Phyllis' doctor - I guess Phyllis was responsbile for paying him off - but he could be back as well! Stay tuned......

I guess everyone is different in what they like. I thought this weeks show was the best I've seen in a long time. Peter Ports acting was exeptional and so was Doug Davidson's. I enjoyed the scenes and they kept me on the edge of my seat. I can certainly understand why children should not see scenes like this. I think Y&R used to have a rating on the top part of the tv screens but I don't see them now. Parents should keep an eye on what their children watch and I know sometimes it can't be helped. When my kids were little it was hard for me to do so because you really can't monitor their viewing all the time, as mothers are always doing something besides watching tv. Cooking, cleaning, etc. Nowadays the shows are more violent and so are the movies. And this does not offend or shock me because we see it all the time. And I do agree that Y&R has been much more grafic at times. I do not mind but the producers, directors should take into consideration that kid may watch and they should tone it down. After all, what would they do if their child watched and went out and did the same thing they watched and thought it was ok. Then maybe they would consider this fact more seriously and stop the violence. It is not good for any child to watch. But grown ups on the other hand, can handle it better. It's all in what a person likes to watch. We are all different.

I watched Y & R in Canada on demand on Thursday as I work during the time is airs during the day.... on demand.. prior to the show there is a PG rating followed by "there may be sexual content or nudity and to view at your discresion" The last episode I viewed was Paul shooting his son... I am so dismayed by this.. I am absolutely outraged at MAB for scripting such a tragic story line ..I have viewed my last Y & R episode until the writers clearly provide itelligent Soap Opera type story lines.
