Quote Memory24: You don't need young characters to attract a young audience. What the show needs is good s/ls and some romance. Lots of young people watch all different kinds of drama and teens aren't focused. I started watching Y&R when I was very young and I never watched just for the young set.

Look at shows like Grey's Anatomy or Scandal. Two prime time soaps that don't feature young people. They still do good in those demos.

Y&R's ratings are falling because the s/ls are horrible and it's the same characters featured all the time. No imagination when it comes to this show.

ITA about the romance. And really, what is Y&R saying to the young people? That it's an exciting thing for a daughter-in-law to have a relationship with her child's grandfather? Or that it's okay for a young woman (Daisy) to rape a young man (Daniel), have a child and then use that child as a pawn in a game of marriage with no love? Or that a past rapist can work his way to the top and become a DA? Or that a woman can attempt to murder someone by running them down (Phyllis) and then go on to do more horrific acts but be put on a pedestal? Or that jumping from bed to bed to bed (Phyllis, Sharon, Nikki, Billy, Nick, Victor, Eden, etc., etc.) is a good way to go through life? Where is the romance? Where are at least a few residents of GC who have had and will have morales and ethics? I think it's great to have some of these SLs to keep the show interesting, but I think they'd do better to have a little mix or true love and romance (or is that Cane and Lily who we rarely see because the show is saturated with Victor and Phyllis?). Personnally, I'm sick to death of Victor and Phyllis. They act the same exact way in every scene. Victor with his superior attitude and his, "Ummm...Ummm...Ummm..." to every word he says and Phyllis with her yelling, arms flying, repeating everything at least twice. It's no wonder the show is sinking.

    Classic summary. On target.

Great post! I wasn't a Lane fan before, but I watched with an open mind and I feel they should be on more. We need a balance.

Really, what romance is there on this show any more? Lots of folks are sleeping together, but romance? Middle aged people planning a romantic night out at the Video Arcade? Please.

    Exactly!

The show is a hot mess. They are turning so many viewers off with their s/ls. Some are just outright disgusting.

Firing actors or killing off characters is not the change that Y&R needs. Good writers with vision and talent are what Y&R needs. Nothing on this show is going to change until the headwriting team has been replaced by some real writers who know how to construct a story from start to finish and who know how to create characters and develop them into humans that viewers empathize with, feel sympathy for, love, hate and/or care about in general.

    Quote Backstreet:
Quote Stemp: I miss the cliff hangers--and yeah, I've noticed the friday epis are just kind of ho hum--no drama?! What happened to that?! I enjoyed the who killed Diane s/l more than what's happening now. . .

I miss those wonderful romantic dinners at the Collinade room and those fabulous corporate stories at Chancellor and Newman and the wonderful Abbott family and those family breakfast scenes. I miss Mammie and I miss the inegrity of John Abbott. I miss those romantic buildups. The angst. The show is not like that anymore. It is dark, hard core sex, no romance at all. The writers don't obviously don't know hot to write romance. They have no clue what makes the audience want more either. They write junk and it shows everyday on this show. They don't know anything about being creative or even how to build a story. I don't where they get these writers but I do know that two of them were completely responsible for the ending of ATWT. The flopped that show out just like MAB is doing this one. It is horrible.

Oh, those breakfasts at the Abbotts...true Y&R!!!

Hardcore daily gloom & doom on Y&R is difficult to watch. I miss the friendships, the dating, the romances, the love relationships, the family dramas, the parties, the fun times on Y&R. I hope some of that returns soon.

Y&R has been doom and gloom for over 3 years now. I can probably pull up old threads complaining about this same subject. It's truly sad that things have gotten worse over the years. I remember threads from 2008 & 2009...people hoping things would get better and it didn't It's only gotten much much worse.
