One of the people from the line I have been working on lately was Thomas Jefferson Capps. He was one of the soldiers who took the wounded General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson off the field when he was doing some surveillance & was accidentally shot by his own troops. His arm was amputated. Many suffered much more grievous wounds and survived but he got septic and said "Let us go across the river and rest in the shade of the trees" and died. (I love the hymn "Shall we gather at the River?" & selected it for my father's funeral since he was born in a house on the river (Courthouse Bay) & spent so much time on it. His father has "Captain" on his tombstone b/c everyone called him Captain & he made his living on boats as well. Daddy had a little brass horn that had belonged to him. I don't know how old. Grandfather was born in the 1800's & died in 1927. Dad kept it on his shrimp boat & forgot to get it back when he sold the boat. When he remembered, it was too late. The guy who bought the boat had let it sink. Mr Capps lost an arm as well but I am not sure in which battle. There was interview with him done by the UDC in the same collection as the one with my greatgreatgrandfather.

We have high hopes for your stem cell procedure. We will throw a cyber banquet for you when you get back. I wish it could be a real one so we could all meet you! Love & best wishes if I don't get to talk to you again before you go. (We have a family reunion down east so I may not be on a computer for a while. Not sure yet when we are leaving).

The drug companies will suffer however!

Screw the drug companies. They certainly screw us. My daughter takes one med that costs over $500 a month & she is frequently jobless & has no insurance unless I pay about that much for cobra. Some companies will help low income patients but not this one. They did not even respond to the paperwork we sent them. Her meds cost almost as much as she makes in a month.

There are people who believe governments support drug companies and don't bother looking into alternative medication, even though you can take certain meds for 20 years before finding out they were bad for us all along.

I am a retired pharmacist. I have seen the ugly side of BigPharma for a long time. At least the FDA saved us from the thalidomide tragedy (except for those who got it in Europe). Everyone wants to jump on the band wagon with new drugs but sometimes it is better to wait until more data is available. Look at Actos. It really does reduce the insulin needs but it is not worth it with a 40% increase in bladder cancer. Neither my regular doctor nor my endocrinologist would take me off it when I was "just" having swollen ankles. When I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, I took myself off it (& was seriously considering a law suit) but mine turned out to be a false alarm. There was another (youngish) diabetic waiting for a cat scan the day I had mine. He also had a diagnosis of bladder cancer and his doctor STILL would not take him off Actos. Sometimes the doctors just do not know what they should. My regular doctor put me on a diabetic drug named Januvia. I told him I did not think it would help me & he got mad (he does not like it that I insist on being a partner in my care) so I took it. About a month later he had his nurse call & say I could quit taking it, that my natural insulin production was too low for it to help. DUH! I knew that. I thought he knew that I am like a Type I (totally insulin dependent). My disease hit out of the blue when I was stressed to the max & sick with a horrible sinus infection that would not heal (I had to have radical sinus surgery to thow it off). I was a bit overweight (maybe 30 pounds) but not obese and I was fairly fit. I took the pills (higher & higher doses) for a year or two, then calculated an insulin dose & wrote my doctor a note telling him what I wanted to do & started insulin. He was so good. He was used to working with me as a clinical pharmacist at the local hospital & he usually asked me what I wanted to take when I had a new problem & I either told him or asked that he decide, depending. I wish I still had him but the last two appts I had with him, I drove 35 miles to get there only to find out he had to be out of the office & his staff did not call me. (Even though they ask for an update on your insurance & information every time you go, it never makes it to the doctor's office. They apparently just collect it for billing. So, they called an old number if they called at all).

...Moxy, that is wonderful news! You must be very excited - please remember to update us; we have been rooting for you. I haven't posted much recently - family issues have put me in a bit of a funk. I struggle with depression & tend to isolate when I am in a sad state. I miss having a family to tend to, & I want them back so badly.
Blue, when is daughter Alex coming home? I read an article that said Philly is the worst city for bedbugs right now. Better hose her down when she comes in!
