Gross was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of telephone operator, Virginia Ruth, and William Oscar Gross, a tool designer. His high school was Kelvyn Park High School on the north side of Chicago. He received his drama degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago before attending Yale University for his Master of Fine Arts degree. His sister, Mary Gross, is a former Saturday Night Live cast member.
Michael is best known for his portrayal of the amiable dad Steven Keaton, on the popular 80's sitcom, Family Ties. He later appeared in many other television series, including Spin City, as well as starring in the Tremors series of films, followed by the TV series of the same name.
Michael Gross is an avid rail fan, with an extensive collection of railroad antiques, who has also been a spokesperson for the Model Railroad Industry Association, which promotes the hobby of model railroading. Notably, Michael has also been a spokesperson for Operation Lifesaver, which promotes railroad safety.
