Smith's "The Secret Circle," the trilogy she wrote after publishing The Vampire Diaries , has been optioned for a pilot by the CW. Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, who were former collaborators of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" creator Joss Whedon, have been tapped to adapt the books.

For a long time, "The Vampire Diaries" has been built up around the Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) triangle.
