Smith's "The Secret Circle," the trilogy she wrote after publishing The Vampire Diaries, has been optioned for a pilot by the CW. Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, who were former collaborators of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" creator Joss Whedon, have been tapped to adapt the books.
The books follow a teenage girl who is forced to move from California to New England where she is drawn into a witches' coven and a dangerous romance.
The project is currently in the script stage but the pilot should be completed in the spring and a decision about its future as a possible series will be made shortly thereafter.

Former Days of Our Lives actress Shelley Hennig (ex-Stephanie) has joined the cast of "Secret Circle." She will be playing the role of Diana, the coven leader.
