All the vampire work together against Ric, but the alliance rapidly falls apart.

Before Sunset. image

Ric sits in his old classroom. Caroline is walking the halls, chatting to Tyler about how he has to leave town again. She finds Rebekah cleaning up after the dance. Caroline's sorry about her mom. When Beks walks down the hall, Ric rushes out and tries to stake her. Caroline leaps between them. The two vamps stake him together. He starts to smoke. Caroline runs. He breaks her neck and drags her body back inside. Beks runs home to tell her brother what's up. He wants to get his doppelganger before he leaves but she's eager to go immediately.

Stefan drops by Elena's, where she and Jer are re-decorating. He offers to help out. "Why don't you give us just one day without any vampires in it?" Jer complains. Stefan opens the door and finds Damon with bloody Bonnie. "We have a little problem," Damon says. Bonnie explains and Damon complains. The witch is sure there must be some way to undo the spell but she's clueless. Klaus shows up. He wants his doppelganger. They won't let him in. He paces outside and smashes a window. He kicks a soccer ball through the door and then tries skewering them with white pickets from a fence.

Ric scares Elena when he calls and tells her that he has Caroline. She runs over to the school and finds Caroline with her hands penciled to the desk. Elena rips out one pencil and Ric yells at her to stop trusting vampires. Elena has to call Stefan to tell him what's up. He stops Klaus' attack to explain and they start brainstorming on ways to rescue the two women. Bonnie has a real idea. She wants to immobilize Ric but she'll need all of their help. Back at the school, Ric continues torturing Caroline and challenges Elena to kill her, just as she's been trained to do. She won't. He lectures her about what a disappointment she would be to her parents. When he orders her to kill her friend, she tries stabbing him and then throws a vial of vervane in his face.

Bonnie paces at Damon's as they wait for her mom. Eventually, Abby arrives. Her daughter explains that she needs a dessication spell. Her mom thinks that's too dangerous but Bonnie is sure she can handle it. Abby explains that the spell requires her to stop a human heart. They head over to the school, where Jeremy is waiting. Meanwhile, Stefan and Klaus arrive at the school. The original still wants to leave with his doppelganger. Stefan offers to go with him. Klaus teases that they should let Elena decide which brother goes. "Go for it," Stefan challenges. They wander over to the others. Bonnie hands them a vial of her blood to drink. Klaus reminds them that he created the line that they're all in.

In the school halls, Caroline runs into Klaus. He orders her to go and then makes his way down the hall. Ric just backed down from trying to kill Elena. The brothers ambush him but he breaks both of their necks. Klaus jumps him and grabs his heart. This lets Bonnie make a connection spell using Jeremy. The connection is broken when Ric fights off Klaus. Before Ric can stake him, Elena tells at him to stop. She threatens to kill herself, explaining that her death will kill him too because the witch bound their lives together.

Elena comes to at Klaus' place. He's having her drained. Tyler arrives and wants to help her but his boss orders him not to. She yells for his help but Klaus sends him to get more blood bags. Klaus tells her that he doesn't want hybrids anymore; he just needs his family. He lectures her for getting between the brothers. "Once you're dead, you won't have to choose... but just between us girls, who would you have picked?" he asks. She tells him to rot in Hell. Her leaves her to bleed to death. Tyler runs in to untie her but Klaus catches him. Tyler doesn't want to be his bitch anymore. He claims the sire bond is broken. Before Klaus can kill Tyler, the brothers run in and ambush him. They grab Klaus' heart and Bonnie casts the spell again. As it works, Klaus becomes weak and Damon leads Elena away. Bonnie momentarily fears she's killed Jeremy but pounds on him until he comes back. Klaus is left on the floor to desiccate.

The brothers take Elena home. She assures them that Ric can't hurt her now. She apologizes for stringing them both along but she can't take the chance of losing one of them. They offer to call her from the road after they dump Klaus in the ocean. When she walks into the kitchen, her friends are throwing a 'getting rid of Klaus' party. They toast to the Klaus free life. After the party, Jeremy tells his sister that he won't let Ric take her from him. She starts painting the window and then collapses.

Across town, Ric has called a counsel meeting and corners Liz and Carol about harboring the vampires in their families. Outside of town, the Salvatores drive along. Damon is in a good mood and thinks things are looking up. Stefan says that they make a pretty good team... but he wonders what will happen when Elena finally makes a choice. They each offer to leave town if she picks the other.

Cryptic commentary: There was a great, high school black comedy feel to the first chunk of tonight's episode. The pencils through Caroline's hands were a nice touch. It was also nice for a fleeting moment between she and Klaus. Of course, this can't really be the end of Klaus. I expected him to jump up during the last scene. They didn't get that corny though. The most unexpected thing was that a plan involving the Salvatore brothers actually seemed to work.
