UB News: Ugly Betty Stars in New Thriller Towards Darkness

    Friday, November 24 2006

    America Ferrera as Betty Suarez
Ugly Betty's America Ferrera (Betty Suarez) has just completed post production on her new thriller Towards Darkness(Hacia la oscuridad). The film takes place in Columbia and deals with 90 minutes in the life of a kidnapped hostage. It depicts the frustrations of his family, the negotiations of a special ops team, and the anxious struggle against time of the man in charge of delivering the ransom. It's told in flash backs which highlight the memories of each of the characters and develop the intricate histories that bind them together. Tony Plana (UB's Ignacio Suarez) plays a relative of the kidnapped victim in a role well suited to his finely attuned and subtle acting talents. America Ferrera plays Luiza, who guides the film's protagonist through the beauty of Columbia and whose love keeps him going. She also serves as the executive producer of the film in a work that allows her to expand her range in new directions. This film was inspired by real life events that writer director Josť Antonio Negret experienced nearly a decade ago, but have been heavily fictionalized to gain a symbolic dimension. Shot rapidly in Panama in less than a month, the film conveys the panic and desperation of a situation which has become all too common in Central America.
