Who me? (CBS)

This was good. (CBS)

Restless Rant week of August 19 - 23:

"Y&R" tackled the death of Katherine Chancellor this week, and a few other storylines continued to plod forward simultaneously. Thoughts:

Incredibly focused.
The comic relief of Sharon making crazy eyes and facial expressions unseen by the other characters, is probably the most compelling part of the ongoing storyline with her and Nick. Though nothing about the Avery character evokes much feeling, my eyebrows raised on her behalf when Faith ripped up her pictures. Sure it was dippy that Avery had spent hours cutting them out in the first place, but what a holy terror Faith has become! She's definitely got great potential to be a spoiled manipulating adult character down the road. That brings us to Cassie. It's hard to buy Cassie as a sneaky schemer, even as a figment of Sharon's imagination. Somehow it doesn't sit right. As for Sherlock Noah, he's putting the pieces together, s-l-o-w-l-y. It's time for Summer to mention that Creamy Nude lipstick to him...

Our hero.
The Chelsea/Dylan scenes are like fingernails on a chalkboard. Chelsea goes on about Dylan being more perfect than anyone who ever lived, and 'doing right by her son' even though she's based his life and well-being on a huge lie/con that is about to blow up in her face, and Dylan goes on (to that horrible sappy music) about being their protector while performing 'super dad' duties. Too much. Meanwhile, there's Adam dropping by and holding his own son, yet not being allowed to know he's his son due to his heinous crime of being too attached to the family business. Chelsea getting what's coming to her can't happen soon enough.

You can't erase me.
The Carmine/Lauren/Michael storyline was excellent at its peak, but is beginning to deteriorate into silliness, what with Carmine becoming a one-note cheesy stalker and Michael carelessly hollering death threats in the middle of the police station on a regular basis.

It's my party.
So Tyler, Devon, Noah, Abby, and Lily will all be working together at Jabot now? Abby's teasing about technically being Tyler's boss might have been funny, but could be foreshadowing of tension to come. I hope we see reaction from Victor about Noah, Abby, and Summer, if she returns, all working for Jack.

Skydiving without a parachute.
Loved Billy's line about Victor, who is being as vindictive as ever, but he has to be sick to the teeth of Victoria's drama with her father - it's like she's surprised and disappointed all over again each time Victor proves to be a meddling, overbearing threat to her marriage. This isn't new!

Everything's going as planned.
A few steps forward in the Neil mystery. He found new information about Anne to bring to the investigation, but for some reason there were no cops or detectives available and he had to tell Kevin. Huh? Anyway, the big new reveal was that Mason is in on this with Hilary. While the surprise twist was great, it would have been so much more intense if she'd had an unexpected connection to a Genoa City core character or past character. Sigh.

Bucket list.
Of course the big story this week was the announcement that Katherine Chancellor had passed away. Fan reaction to the postcards/bucket list storyline ranged from those who found it disrespectful and tacky, to those who thought it seemed a perfect send-off. I was okay with it (aside from Billy not getting a postcard), but found the reactions of some Genoa City residents to the news of her death to be underwhelming. Jill, Nikki, and Esther were/are dazed and devastated - very appropriate - yet somehow I expected more tears and emotion from others in Genoa City who had known and loved Katherine for so long. Everyone's first instinct should have been to gather, perhaps at the Club or the Chancellor estate, with rivalries briefly set aside as they downed drinks, remembered Katherine, and struggled to absorb the enormity of the loss. That would have been realistic for someone of Katherine's stature and was missing for me. The letters to Nikki and Jill are intriguing, and a nice twist moving forward. What do you think of the handling of Katherine's death thus far? Vote:
