The oldest son to Ivy Winthrop Crane and Sam Bennett, Ethan Winthrop found out that Sam was his biological father, a man he hated, at his and Theresa's engagement party. Julian still remained is his legal father and was listed on his birth certificate. Ethan grew up with Gwen Hotchkiss and the two were always believed to be meant for each other. After graduating law school, he returned home to Harmony and began working for Crane Industries. A reluctant Ethan was pressured into making a commitment to Gwen by his aunt Sheridan. When Gwen turned him down because she didn't feel that his whole heart was in it, someone began stalking him. It was later discovered that his stalker was Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald. He forgave her for the stalking and the two of them started to get close. Ethan still ended up proposing to Gwen despite all of Theresa's tricks to make him fall in love with her instead.
Gwen went out of town for business and suggested that Theresa assist with making the wedding plans. Theresa made the most of the time and tried to get as close to Ethan as possible. Ethan started to feel something for Theresa and called Gwen to come home as soon as possible. Gwen finished up her business trip and returned to Harmony the next day. That's when she found Ethan and Theresa in a compromising position. Theresa had confessed her love to Ethan just before Gwen arrived. Theresa squirmed her way out of the situation and managed to become Gwen's maid of honor! Theresa took advantage of every chance she had to try and make Ethan realize that he belonged with her instead of Gwen. Ethan continued to proclaim his love of Gwen until Theresa was almost killed in a motorcycle accident. He then realized that he had true feelings for her and told her so hours before his wedding to Gwen was supposed to take place. Ethan called off the wedding, but not the engagement to Gwen. Gwen finally broke off the engagement when he proposed to Theresa.
Ethan then found out that he was not a Crane, and that sent shockwaves through his relationship with Theresa. He told her that he wanted to call off the wedding, but she talked him into going through with it. He dropped his last name of Crane and walked away from the family. Ivy (his mother) never liked Theresa and tried to make him see her for what she really was. He promised her that if he caught her in another lie, he would end it with her. Ivy was able to provide him with proof that Theresa had lied to him about sleeping with Julian, and Ethan had reached his breaking point. He broke off the engagement because of all of her lies. Ethan and Gwen began to grow close again despite the repeated attempts from Theresa to get him back.
Later when Theresa confessed to killing Julian Crane, Ethan and Gwen tried to save her because they believed that she was innocent. When the judge found her guilty, Theresa and Ethan went on the run together. Theresa went into labor (with Julian's child) at the cabin they were hiding out in. Gwen and Ethan delivered the baby just as the police rushed in and took Theresa away. Despite his attempts, Theresa was executed for the murder. Ethan and Gwen continued their loving relationship, believing that Theresa was dead.
As part of Alistair's plot, Theresa was still very much alive. When she returned to town she tried her best to get Ethan back. Ethan continued to be torn between her and Gwen. Just as he was about to choose Theresa, Gwen became pregnant with his child. Ethan made the commitment to be with Gwen and his child. Theresa continued to manipulate things in an attempt to get Ethan back. After a show down with Theresa, Gwen was rushed to the hospital where Ethan was told that he had to choose between her and the baby. The baby ended up dying and Ethan promised Gwen that he would never allow Theresa to come between them again. The couple opted to have a surrogate carry a child for them. Theresa managed to kidnap the surrogate and have herself implanted instead. When Theresa revealed that she was pregnant with twins, Ethan recalled a night that he was raped by Theresa and that one of the babies actually belonged to him and Theresa. One of the babies died and the surviving one turned out to belong to Ethan and Theresa. Gwen was devastated to find out that the two of them had been together. She attempted to kill Theresa and kidnapped the baby. Ethan tried to settle things and make peace, but Theresa wouldn't have it. She sabotaged Ethan's career so that he would have to stay in Harmony close to her.

After the videotape plays Gwen’s voice confessing, Theresa tells Ethan, “We’re going to be together!” Theresa asks Sam to play the tape so Ethan can hear everything and Gwen and Rebecca try to make a quiet escape. Sam catches them though and Ethan says they will watch the tape along with the rest of them.
Theresa hooks up the camera to the TV so everyone can see and hear Gwen and Rebecca confessing their crimes. Everyone watches in shock and anger, as Gwen and Rebecca stand there in horror. After it’s over Ethan angrily turns the camera off and lashes out at Gwen. Ivy, Paloma and Sheridan also take turns yelling at the Hotchkiss women while they try to defend themselves. Ethan is disgusted with Gwen, but she says the tape is a fake. She blames Little Ethan for editing various conversations between Gwen and Rebecca to make it look like they said those things. Little E says he couldn’t have messed with it because it was taped right after the footage of Kay and Miguel getting married. Sam says he’s right and police skills must run in the family. Ethan believes his son and Theresa happily hugs Ethan and Little E. Sam congratulates Theresa and Ethan, as Noah welcomes Little E to the family and Ivy apologizes to Theresa for not believing her for all these years. She says she realizes Theresa loves Ethan more than her own life and she welcomes her to the family. Theresa promises to be good to Ethan and Ivy says she believes her. Theresa asks Ethan if they are really going to be together and Ethan says they will be a family with Little E, Jane and even Jonathan. He tells a shocked Gwen that she is an unfit mother and he will not let her raise their son. Theresa says after all these years her dream has finally come true. Ethan smiles and enthusiastically plants a kiss on her. Gwen isn’t ready to give up and points out that Theresa lied to him too regarding Little Ethan. Theresa defends herself and Gwen continues her tirade, but Sam and Luis stop her by handcuffing both her and Rebecca. Rebecca doesn’t put up a fight and requests a strip search, but Gwen says they can’t arrest them for what happened in Mexico because it is out of their jurisdiction. Sam counters that he will detain her until the D.A. reviews her involvement with Juanita and her plans to blow up the church. Ethan tells Gwen she just got her answer as to why he chose Theresa. Frustrated, Gwen spits out, “Damn it!”
Gwen and Rebecca are zapped into janitor’s outfits and Theresa says it’s God’s way of telling them to clean up their acts! Gwen and Rebecca are mortified that they are in hideous polyester and Rebecca recalls that the last time she wore anything this tacky was when they went to Vegas a few years back. Gwen doesn’t remember it and Rebecca says Gwen was really upset about Theresa and Ethan for the millionth time and ended up marrying that guy she met. Gwen freaks out and says Rebecca told her it was all a dream, but Rebecca assures her it was not, but recalls that she never got divorced. Ethan and Theresa realize that his and Gwen’s marriage is null and void and they can get married now. Theresa asks her new sister-in-law Kay to hocus pocus Rebecca and Gwen off to go mop something. Kay zaps them and they disappear. Ethan asks Father Lonigan to marry him and Theresa and he says he’d be honored to.
Everyone takes heir seats and Endora takes off Father Lonigan's sunglasses. When he opens his eyes, he can see! He is thrilled and says everyone is just as he imagined him or her. He thanks Endora for giving him back his eyesight and says, “God bless you.” Endora says he already did because he saved her mommy. Father Lonigan agrees and says God forgives all those who come to him. Ethan interrupts him saying they really want to get married. Father Lonigan says, “Let’s get on with it!” Theresa notices she doesn’t have a proper dress on and Kay zaps her into a bridal gown. Sam says, “Having a witch in the family is going to be fun!” Miguel is finally okay with it too. Endora says this is perfect, but Tabitha say it's almost perfect thinking about Timmy. Endora says she doesn’t have to settle for almost perfect and Timmy’s hand reaches out to Tabitha.
While they stand in front of Father Lonigan, Theresa and Ethan check to make sure this isn’t another fantasy and when they realize it’s not, Ethan asks what could stop them now? Just then, Rebecca yells out to stop the wedding and Gwen and Rebecca come rushing in. A cop stops them, but they say everyone else got a happy ending why can’t they get one too? Father Lonigan says if they are sincere about being good they can. They both say they are sincere and Rebecca hears a donkey. She smiles and says, “There’s my happy ending!” Gwen wonders about her and the cop says he’s always had a thing for bad girls gone good and tells her to call him once she gets out on bail. This appeases Gwen and she says she’d like that.
Theresa and Ethan say their vows and are married as everyone stands and cheers. Theresa turns to the camera and says, “Always follow your Passion because that will lead you to your happy ending.”
In the church basement, Gwen tells Ethan that they should be leaving for their honeymoon. Ethan suspects there must really be something on that video tape. Theresa wants them to play it since Gwen is so petrified. "You two witches are going to get exactly what you deserve!" Theresa smirks. Little Ethan repeats what he heard Gwen say. All of the Lopez-Fitzgerald's gather together against her and Rebecca, refusing to let them leave the room. Everyone wants to see what's on the tape and nothing they can say will stop them. As Ethan fumbles with the camera, the two women stand aside and hope it is actually broken.
As Little Ethan hooks the camera up to a TV, Rebecca still wants to make a break for it. Gwen won't let her. Fancy and Sheridan watch them, sure that someone is about to get hurt. Little Ethan rewinds the tape and it starts to play. Gwen and Rebecca wring their hands while Sam explains that he must have left the camera running. As the tape plays, the sound only works for the first moment and stops. Gwen says that's because there is nothing to hear and she's starting to feel insulted by all of this. Theresa points out that they heard Gwen say that Ethan can never know the horrible things she's done. He demands an explanation. She says that she just splurged on their honeymoon and had to get her mother to help pay for it. "I want to be on this wonderful honeymoon so, please, can we just go?" she asks.
Esme stumbles into the basement and tells everyone how much she was looking forward to sitting through four boring weddings. She stumbles toward the priest's office and knocks the camera on the floor. Theresa clutches at it. "Oh no! I'm never going to be able to prove what Gwen and Rebecca did!" she gasps. Theresa cries about how unfair this is. Fancy prompts Esme to apologize. Rebecca says Fate must not want Theresa to win. Ethan says it looks like nothing was on the tape anyway. Theresa clings to Ethan and refuses to let it end this way. Luis threatens to bring the camera to the crime lab. Gwen is smug. Pilar starts swearing. Gwen declares that the order of the universe has finally been corrected and she and Ethan will be together for good.
Back downstairs, Theresa cries and apologizes for ruining everyone's wedding day. Ethan asks for a moment alone with her. "I don't like to see you cry," he tells her. He just got her back and now he is losing her again, but he doesn't have any hope for them. "I'm only half a man right now without you," he says. She cries about everything they've lost. He knows that everything she did was just because she loves him. He promises that their hearts will always be one. Gwen reminds him that they have a plane to catch. Ivy stops her. "Do you think you'll ever be able to make him happy?" she asks. Gwen does. She breaks Ethan away from Theresa and tells him that he's had enough time with Theresa. Gwen takes Ethan to the door and tells everyone that they have their true loves and she has the right to have Ethan. Pilar tells her that her marriage is a joke. Gwen tells her she and her family are bad Catholics. Esme calls her a word that rhymes with witch. Ethan tells her to stop embarrassing herself. Theresa continues to beg Ethan not to leave. She runs into Ethan's arms again and tells him she can't live without him. He loves her, but Gwen is his wife. Before he can leave, Sam walks in with the camera: It's been fixed. It plays and they can hear that Gwen and Rebecca exposed Ethan to the tabloids. Gwen tries to pull him out but he pushes her away.
