Quote Ms Kane: Well, GrandMa Kate passed away. I think the original Ruth just was too sick or not interested in doing anymore. But they did have Lee Meriweather come in as her replacement quite a few times. But even Tara made a brief comeback.
I agree that GrandMa Kate can't be brought back as a character but why cannot Ruth or Tara be recast? I don't understand ABCs obsession with having one actor be totally synonamous with one character. Not to hurt any of you soapers feelings but with few exceptions such as "Erica Kane" or "Vicky Buchannan" or "Luke Spenser" and a couple others, new actors can be put in existing characters!!! That to me is the one thing that CBS soaps have over ABC soaps; they understand the value of a popular character role and when an actor leaves the role or does not fit the role, they send him/her away for awhile and bring them back..same character new actor.. period. Kendall is a wonderful example of a character that no one thought could be recast when S M Gellar left but was very successfully recast. On OLTL, it took forever but the actor who played Clint Buchannan was replaced very successfully.
AMC has many fine female and male characters but I cannot think of one outside of Joe Martin (And now Jeff Martin) who I consist to be a role model. This cast seems to only concerned with backstabbing and threatening to kill and putting down each other and stalking each other which while sometimes makes for a good story more often than not gets boring and not fun to watch.
These characters need voices of reason like Brooke English (extremely underused) and Ruth Martin to guide them and tell them when they are doing what they know to be wrong and to be there to stand beside them when they ultimately do the right...or wrong thing!
thanks for listening and peace out!
