Quote Mrs. Lansing: I have pretty much stayed away from this thread because I fear my raves come off tepid, and my rants come off well I suppose a little scary..lol! But here goes.
I have read quite a few posts complaining that the stories take too long to play out as someone who began watching soaps in the 1970's I heartedly disagree. I love when a soap takes a year or more for a story to play out. I love when a story takes twists and turns, and involves more characters, and stories criss cross with each other. I remember about 30 years ago as stories would play out more characters would become involved and the stories would comingle over the course of a year. Then during November or May sweeps there would be a huge gala or party where all the characters would come together and the whole month would be the party where all the stories exploded. It was literally a can not miss an episode month. That to me is soap opera. I really feel towards the 90's MTV ruined it all. Everything became about quicker and faster, even edits became too fast. It used to be a shot in a film or tv show would last about 7 to 10 seconds before a cut. Then MTV brought in the quick cuts a few seconds then boom, then boom. Quick cuts work when a scene has slowly built intensity and then when the climax comes the quicker edits would come. Now someone can be having a casual conversation and it's cut cut cut.
So no I do not want the stories to be over faster. I want them to take their time, develop some characterization, granted even in the old days the characters motivations would change depending on the story, because after all soaps are all plot and the characters do not change so sometimes people do things that would make you say wait...Carly would never do that. But at least you had a real understanding of why the character was doing what they did. I want plots that take some time to play out, characters who I root for or against because I understand them. Or what happened to the bad girl who you hated what she was doing but understood why she was doing it and felt actual empathy for her? This still occurs sometimes, but just not in the same way because it's all about faster faster more more more.
Okay rant over, and I have no idea if I made any sense at all. LOL!
I second your rant. It seems like people were expecting this out of ABC soaps for some reason, but the soaps on CBS I have tried several times since the cancelation to into Y&R and B&B and they IMO the slowest shows on air. I cut B&B a little slack bc it was only 1/2 an hour but Y&R did not have an excuse.
The people I was tuning in to watch were on an it was the same story for months.
I like the pace of GH the stories are not blink and there over, but there is variety. There are different characters on every couple of days I don't feel like 4 characters own the show anymore.
