Ava has seconds thoughts about leaving. Jeffrey defends her. She and Coop need a break
At the airport, Ava is about to get on the plane when she buys a greeting card that reads: ‘Springfield...where family is everything.’ She checks her phone messages and realizes that Alan-Michael has been calling her. When she calls him back, he asks her if she was offended by the offer he made her of a new executive position at Spaulding. She doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He explains that his assistant dropped the proposal off while she was in the shower. She realizes that Coop must have intentionally not given it to her and hangs up. She writes a note for him and walks out. She goes to the town square and looks at the Christmas tree, recalling Christmas time with her adopted mother who told her that ‘family is everything...never let it go.’
She walks by the Cooper house and looks in to see Harley making cookies with the boys. Rick walks out and asks her why she isn’t on an airplane. She explains that she just couldn’t go; there is too much on her mind and going on in her life right now. They look at how happy Harley and Gus are and he tells her that she should take her time. ‘Things may change, but it begins and ends with family,’ he tells her. They wish each other Merry Christmas and she returns to the tree in the square to think of her mother.
Later, at the Cooper house, she hides behind the gate to witness Buzz proposing to Olivia. Ava smiles and goes to Outskirts for a drink. A man at the bar with his friends starts chatting her up and asking her about her problems. She says that it would take all night to explain them but tries anyway. Her parents are the sort of people who you would cross the street to avoid if you saw them coming. They hate each other and her boyfriend has been trying to get her out of town. This bar however, has been like her second home since she arrive in town. The man tells her that he asked Santa for a pretty girl for Christmas and Ava asks him if he told his wife that. He should take his wedding ring off if he’s going to try and pick up girls. He gets more crude and starts grabbing at her before Jeffrey appears and pushes the guy off. Getting her outside, she tells him that she can handle herself. He wonders why she hasn’t left for England with Coop. When she tries to leave, he asks her not to, but Coop arrives and she asks Jeffrey to go. He shuffles away as she wishes him a Merry Christmas. He goes back into the bar and the guy who was trying to pick up Ava starts calling her a piece of trash that wasn’t worth his time etc. Jeffrey has enough of this and goes for him just as three of his friends jump him.
Ave tells Coop that she couldn’t get on the plane and he begins demanding answers. She accuses him of not allowing her to make decisions for herself and remarks that this says a lot about their relationship. He protests that he just wants to see if they can make a relationship outside of Springfield. He needs her to trust his judgement and pack her bags while he goes and gets their tickets changed. He runs off and she’s still unsure. The phone rings and it’s Frank calling to tell her that Jeffrey is in the emergency room.
She rushes to the hospital and discovers Jeffrey laid up in bed covered in bandages. Frank tells her that he didn’t know who else to call. She goes in to sit beside him and he opens his eyes to tell her that she shouldn’t be there. She hopes that he doesn’t need money for bail, but she’ll help him any other way. He starts to laugh and tells her to go, which she does, returning to Frank to ask again why he called her. Frank explains that they found a gift addressed to her among his belongings and he gives it to her. She’s not sure how to take this. He tells her that his father abandoned him for twenty years and he hated him for it, but, eventually, Buzz won him over. One of the men from the fight gets wheeled passed them and Ava starts to realize what happened. Frank tells her that it was four against one and Jeffrey took a bad beating.
Returning to her room, she opens the gift and sees that it is a pair of earrings in her birth stone. Coop rushes in and asks her where she’s been. Seeing the gift by her hand, he asks if she’s been seeing someone else. She explains that she just went to see Jeffrey who was put in the hospital when he tried to defend her. He refused to talk to her though. She can’t understand why he would buy her a gift and not give it to her. Coop confesses that Jeffrey came to the airport trying to give it to her, but he stopped him and sent him away. He tells her that Jeffrey isn’t worthy of being her father. That isn’t his decision to make, Ava says, adding that she doesn’t need his protection and he needs to stop this or... But Coop doesn’t want to talk about any of this; he just wants to get on a plane. Ave tries to tell him that there is too much in her life right now: She needs a break, she needs time to herself to think. Coop is dumbfounded for a moment but a knock on the door breaks the silence. It’s Olivia, who has come to tell her daughter that she’s marrying Buzz. Olivia asks Coop to leave and he does, after telling Ava not to go anywhere. Olivia says that she just wants Buzz to be happy. The Cooper men are a rare breed; they aren’t controlling and manipulative, she says, Ava is lucky to have gotten one so early in life. Ava, who is rather unconvinced by this, doesn’t say anything and Olivia walks out as Coop returns. He tells her that he wants them to start over and he wishes her parents weren’t in her life; he doesn’t trust them or Alan-Michael. She tells him to trust her and that they need time apart. They got together too fast. He needs to follow his dreams and let he do what she want, even if that means working for Spaulding. He reluctantly nods and she leaves. He goes out, only to be found by Marina, Buzz and Frank who promise to help him, relax and get plastered.
She knock on Alan-Michael’s door as he’s escorting one of his lady friends out. He’s surprised to see her and asks her why she isn’t in England. She asks him for the job details and he explains them and says that he thinks she’ll do a great job. But is he only offering her the job to get her into bed? she wonders. He honestly answers yes, but explains that, business comes first and he wouldn’t give her a job if he didn’t think she could do it. She thanks him for his honesty and accepts the job before returning to her room. She puts on the earrings that Jeffrey gave her and smiles as she looks out at the town.
