    Hairspray: The Guiding Light Connection

    Monday, July 23 2007

    Brittany Snow
Guiding Light's former Susan 'Daisy' Lemay, Brittany Snow, has been very busy recently. This past Friday, her latest film, Hairspray, opened to widespread adulation and an impressive box office take. The film is based on the hit Broadway musical of the same name, itself a remake of a the campy original film by cult favorite John Waters. It tells the story of 'pleasantly plump' Tracy Turnblad, a high school student in 1962 Baltimore who fights for desegregation while battling for TV stardom. Also starring in the film is John Travolta (in drag), Michelle Pfeiffer, Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah and Nikki Blonsky.

Snow plays the role of Amber Von Tussel, daughter of a beauty queen and one of Turnblad's primary opponents. In a strange coincidence, this is the same role which was played on Broadway by Snow's fellow GL cast member Laura Bell Bundy (she played Marah Lewis from 1999-2001). The 2002 Broadway run of the play won several Tony awards. In addition, besides the talented Ms. Snow, the film also features two other GL alumni: Christopher Walken, who played Mike Bauer while a child actor, and Allison Janney who provided two years of comic relief as Ginger, one of the Spaulding maids.

Since leaving the cast of GL after a three year stint (1998-2001), Snow continued her television career appearing on American Dreams as Meg Pryor (2002-2005) before breaking out of type when she appeared on Nip/Tuck(2005) as a neo-nazi. She then made the move to the big screen with a role in John Tucker Must Die, and has just wrapped shooting on three more films to be released over the next year (Prom Night, Finding Amanda, On the Doll).
