Thank you for your weekly recaps. I don't know about the ratings or some other reasons for the shows decline. I do know that switching it to 10am was a disaster, even though I desparately tried to watch it everyday. And Maureen's death has always been something I couldn't get over. I felt when she was gone, the show never recovered. Good luck to you and all of GL

The whole show was totally unrealistic and pandered to christianity, which is going to ruin our country as well as a good story line on a soap. the writing was sophomoric to say the least, plots remained unfinished, like what happened to Jeffrey and my favourite Edmund. the acting was terrible only one character was well done, that of Johnathan. last episode a real DUD.

Dear Matt: Just to tell you from my heart that I thank you for all of your insightful writings over the past years and that I have very much appreciated these thoughts about my favorite of all soaps, Guiding Light...jdvermeer

I am so sad that Guiding Light is no longer on the air. I am 44 years old and grew up watching this show with my grandmother. When I would come home from school she would fill me in on what happened that day on the Guiding Light and I looked forward to summer and watching it with her. My grandmother died several years ago and do not think she would have liked the direction the writers had taken with the show anymore. The attraction was Springfield was a small town America. The writers I think made the decline of the show. The actors were wonderful. She even listened to the show on the radio before television. CBS is a real disappointment to me now.

Sorry Matt I have never read you before, but I enjoyed your blog for the first and last time.
I started listening to GL on the radio at my grandmothers home around 1940's, I continued thru the years, I worked so I did miss a very few years till I got a VCR, I have tapes of special times. I agree with you about the B & B, I liked and watched it the first 2-3 years with the original family, then it started to become a drag with the total story between Brook, Ridge and his psyco mother, and thru the years just the same ole same ole.
The GL was a family to me, I taped it the last 20 years because I would never stay home or in the house when I could be out doors or where ever. Thankfully the
TV stations I had access to kept the show on at 3:00 in the afternoon. I am 73 and this has left a hole in my life, I loved Josh and Reva, I loved Fletch, Holly, Ed, Mike, Roger, of course Bert and Bill and papa Bauer, the 4th of July at the Bauers, so many stories, when Marah, and the 3 other girls were entrenched in the mystery created by Buz, Josh, Billy, Alan when they were young men, thats what all the soaps need a good story line that lasts but still moves foreward.
The soaps also became like sports teams, no loyalty, if something better came along they hopped from one show to another, and then back. Ah well, life goes on and I will just do more gardening.
Our TV outlet replaced GL with Rachel Ray, for me her show is a bore, but I suppose thats generational. I love Martha Stewart. and proud of it. haha

Thanks Matt for being faithfull to Guiding Light...However I am sad that it was cancelled I will miss the Lewis's and the Coopers and Spaulding's.I was really looking forward to seeing Bill and Lizzie deal with parenthood and to see how Frank and Natalia, and of course Olivia would go one raising Fransseca.I felt like there were alot of loose ends.Alan's death was very noble he died a MAN.Also watching how Billy deals with being a step-father for Maureen.I admit I grew to love this family since 1979.And I will always remember Nola's fantasies about her so called boring life and how she loved Quint with a fiery passion.I will never forget the Bauer BBQ's those were a staple for the show.I also wanted to see Remy and Christina raise their next generation of Beudraux's.I would have loved to have watched all of them dealing with the everything that goes to raising a family as well.It would be great if it will find another outlet. To seal the fate of closing it down was the biggest sin of all. Thanks for letting me rant. But I do feel like the daytime genre is fading fast.

Thanks so much for this, just found it and you certainly made it easier for me to understand why GL was taken off the air....while my heart still hurts and my body goes into a very terrible tailspin at 2pm everyday, I pray to get better soon. I am one that did not want Josh and Reva back together, he broke her heart with Cassie and I will never forgive him for that.

Thanks for all the hard work you have done over the years to get all the details out to us, good luck at whatever you do.

We need to support the other 7 soaps or we will be going thru the same thing with them, I know lots of people are unhappy with CBS, but do not allow that to keep you from watching their other soaps please!!
