    How Long?

    Thursday, June 25 2009

Phillip walks out onto the basketball court. He throws the ball in the air and screams, "Why?" Rick arrives and Ed comes out. He invites him over to Michelle's. Phillip thinks he should get home. Ed tells him to call and let him know he's okay. Rick tells his father he's never said that to him. "Maybe I should," Ed says.

Rick calls Beth and tells her that Michelle is going to be the hostess of the barbecue. He brings up the fact that they got married at one and how he didn't want her to feel obligated. She didn't. He calls Mel next to tell her that she doesn't have to be the hostess. That's fine with her. She reminds him that they've been divorced for years. "What a moron!" she says as she hangs up. Beth overhears. They begin laughing. "What were we thinking?" they shout in unison.

    It's Terminal.

    Wednesday, June 24 2009

Phillip wanders outside and suddenly bumps into Rick. "What in the world are you doing here?" the doctor asks him. He claims that he's only there to convince Ed to come to the barbecue. Rick says they'll have to go in together and talk him into it. They go in and start nagging Ed to come. Phillip walks out to take a call from Beth. She tells him what Alan did and worries that history is repeating itself. He's quiet. When he looks back inside, he watches Ed and Rick reminiscing.

Rick and Phillip walk the grounds and talk about the barbecue. The topic turns to when Rick married Beth. Phillip doesn't want to talk about it, but Rick continues and tells him that he needs to learn to forgive everyone else like they've forgiven him. They argue and Rick wonders why he's really there. Phillip walks away.

When Phillip wanders onto a basketball court, Rick follows and begins mocking him to the two young men there. Rick and Phillip taunt each other into a game. As the four of them play, the old friends continue to mock each other and bicker. Phillip has trouble breathing and has to take a break. Rick soon follows him. They're kicking themselves for taking on people half their age. Rick says it feels like a hundred years since he thought anything was possible. Phillip tells him that their friendship hasn't changed. When the boys call them 'geriatric' they decide to teach them a lesson. They go back, beat them and laugh. A call comes in for Phillip from Ed.

This Is Out Of The Question.

As Rick and James shoot hoops, the doctor tells him that he doesn't have the market cornered on hating his father. After Rick leaves, Alan arrives and plays with him.

    He Has No Rules.

    Friday, June 12 2009

Rick walks in on Bill and Lizzie while they make out in the office. He needs some help from the Spauldings and doesn't know who else to turn to. After drinking a glass of water and acting melodramatic, he tells them that he needs them to look after the kids' games at the barbecue.

Rick finds Phillip on the basketball court looking lost. Phillip is afraid that his son doesn't seem to be feeling anything. He scares him. "He has no rules," he explains. "I wonder where he got that from," Rick says. Beth comes out and begins laying into Phillip. Rick is called back to the hospital. Beth tells Phillip how long their son could go away for. He tries to play it down but she's furious that James could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Phillip goes to see Rick in the parking lot. He complains about how ridiculous things are. He just wanted to teach his son a lesson, not ruin his life. "You set it in motion, you gotta stop it," Rick says.
