Cassie Layne was given up at birth to pass between foster homes. She married her high school sweetheart and had a daughter who was taken away from her when her husband was arrested on drugs charges. Forced to work as a stripper to pay her legal bills, she soon became a pawn in Alan Spaulding's games. He hired her to spy on the Lewis brothers and inadvertently discovered that she was the lost sister of Reva. When they discovered her rouse, she confessed everything and they accepted her into the family with her new beau, Hart Jessup. She also found her own nemesis, Dinah Marler, and the two fought over Hart in a series of affairs and pregnancies, real and false, before he was killed by Dinah with a bullet meant for Cassie.
A destitute Cassie would eventually marry her amnesiac sister's ex-husband Richard Winslow, Prince of San Cristobel. While he proposed the marriage since he was desperate for an heir, they soon fell in love. This put her at the center of the complex and dangerous political crisis of the small island from which she would eventually flee back to Springfield. Richard died in a car accident and her small inheritance was soon eaten up by debts. Her past soon followed her when Richard's double, Jeffrey, arrived as well as his rival Edmund. She developed awkward relationships with both men while they investigated the woman who had been traveling the world pretending to be her (it was Dinah).
With Edmund, Tammy and RJ, she tried to make a family again, but he would soon regress to the evil man he had been when she knew him on San Cristobel. She turned to Jeffrey for help and comfort while her family fell apart, thanks largely to Jonathan seducing Tammy and Dinah's return. The more she learned of Jeffrey however, the more disillusioned she became. His affair with Blake ended it for them and she began to fall for Josh while his marriage to Reva was faltering. While they resisted their attraction, they finally gave in. Their controversial relationship continues.

At Cross Creek, Reva can't accept that her sister is moving away. Cassie feels like she's been in a rut. Reva thinks she just needs a vacation. Cassie wants a fresh start. Reva weeps. Cassie reminds her that they aren't exactly close and haven't been for a long time. Cassie hugs her and tells her to be happy. Cassie leaves, sure about what she should do. Reva calls Jeffrey and tells him that her sister has gone over the edge.
Cassie returns home and finds Josh holding a model of the planets that he made with RJ. She tells him that she is going to make things right for RJ and explains that she is leaving. He finds this sudden. "I've been slowly leaving this town since the night Tammy died," she says. He tells her she has a support system there, even if it's not a good one. Jeffrey arrives. She assumes Reva sent him. Cassie's mind is already made up. She asks them to leave so she can talk to RJ. They file out.
Cassie and RJ sit on the steps and she explains things. He thinks they would be leaving Tammy behind. She says that Tammy will always be in their hearts. She's asked a lot of him over the years, but thinks it's worth one more try. They do their secret handshake and he asks her where they are moving. Sitting on the couch, she pulls out the globe and explains that they will be moving to Hawaii. They hug. When she looks up, she sees Reva staring at her. She tries to convince them to stay. RJ goes upstairs to get a photo album. Reva complains about the sun in Hawaii and suggests they write out pro and con columns. Cassie picks up a tool belt and asks Reva to keep an eye on RJ while she takes care of something.
Cassie brings Cyrus his tool belt. She remembered what made him a good thief – he always looked things over top to bottom before leaving a job. It made her realize that he left his tools at the job so that he would be caught and she would dump him. He admits it and explains that there would always be someone between them: Tammy. He feels bad that she is moving away. She insists that it's not about him. He gave her a wake up call and she's grateful for it. She gives him a kiss. They share a lingering smile before she walks out.
Cassie tracks down Josh at the church. Sitting in the pew with him, they talk about their marriage. He tells her that no one deserves happiness as much as she does. "I figure I'm due," she says, tears in her eyes. As she wipes them away, he tells her that he loves her and she will always be one of the most important people in his life. She hugs him and thanks him for everything he's given her. He offers to keep an eye on Tammy's grave for her while she's away.
Back at Cassie's, Reva complains to Jeffrey. He still thinks Hawaii sounds like a good time. Cassie returns. Jeffrey wishes her good luck. "Traitor!" Reva growls. Cassie thanks him. He leaves so the sisters can talk. Cassie wonders if her sister's reluctance to let her leave is really out of concern for her. "It's about both of us... and mama," Reva says. She made a promise to their mother to look after her. Cassie thinks they're both two selfish for one town and reminds her that she got there first. She needs to learn to live in the present and move on with her life. Reva threatens to call her every day. "We can keep fighting long distance," Cassie laughs, sadly. "I know we had a late start, but we are sisters," she sobs. They embrace again.
Cassie brings flowers to Tammy's grave. "This is not goodbye, it will never be goodbye," she says. She tells her how much she loves her and then places a photo of the two of them by the flowers before walking away.
At Cassie's, Marina confronts Cyrus about the robbery at the mansion. Cassie defends him and insists that she was with him all day. Marina calls Mallet, concerned that Cassie is putting up so much of a fight. Meanwhile, across the room, Cassie asks Cyrus if he's actually innocent this time. "Absolutely," he promises.
Cassie takes RJ outside to play with his rocket. She suggests that he go and play with his friend while Marina is there. When she goes back inside, she finds that Mallet is now there. She continues to be defensive. Marina continues questioning Cassie while Mallet questions Cyrus. RJ walks in with his rocket and complains that it is broken. Marina is startled that Cyrus gave someone a gift. Mallet checks the toy over and soon discovers that the missing necklace is hidden where the rocket's batteries should be. RJ is sent upstairs. Marina tells them to get a sitter because they are taking them both to the station. Cyrus insists they just take him. Cassie doesn't want any excuses, but she angrily demands to know why he planted the jewels in RJ's toy.
At the station, Mallet thinks that Marina seems a little too happy to have put Cyrus in a cell again. She just hopes that Cassie has had a wake up call. She walks into the interrogation room where Cassie waits. Marina explains that she is an accomplice to Cyrus' crime and threatens to bring RJ in for questioning. Annoyed, Cassie gives her statement. When she walks out, she spots Cyrus in cuffs and lays into him for dragging her son into this mess. He reminds her that she's always known what kind of man he is. He can't forget who his brother is or that they are blood, he explains. "Stay away from me and my son," she says, walking out. Once she's gone, Cyrus gives a full confession before Mallet reminds him of the three strikes law. They now have grounds to send him back to the land down under. Cyrus has information on various robberies and can give him names and dates of those responsible. He'd need a deal before he says anything though. Marina returns and taunts him, telling him that Cassie has finally had a wake up call.
Cassie goes to see her sister at Cross Creek. She tells her that she has been a fool and lost control of her life. She explains what a mistake letting Cyrus into her life has been and complains about everything he's done. Worse than anything, Cyrus seemed to enjoy all of this. She admits that even she has been enjoying it; it's been fun and it let her feel something other than grief. Reva tells her not to be hard on herself. Cassie needs to be hard on herself for her son's sake; she still feels the hole in her heart from losing Tammy. As long as she's here in Springfield, she can't get away from it. She has to leave, she announces. Reva cries. They embrace.
